In 'Looking A Head: an online introduction to the Lydenburg Heads', Iziko Curator of Archaeology Dr Wendy Black interviews Professor Simon Hall from the Department of Archaeology at the University of Cape Town about the Lydenberg Heads, the Iron Age People, concepts of performance, liminality and Rites of Passage.
Join Iziko in creating a living memory bank! Share your thoughts and experiences around both informal and formal Rites of Passage - and let us know how this transitional event has affected your lived experience, contributed to how you identify with others, and even how you felt before, during and after the ceremony.
Iziko Museums of South Africa is the custodian of the Lydenburg Heads, and this online showcase pre-empts a physical exhibition of the artefacts - which will be opened at the Iziko South African Museum in the near future.

I beg to differ with the theory of people moved south... people moved north

@@satura4113 Its more complicated than that, there is definitely some movement Southwards, the spread of iron and Nguni cattle is proof of this. Its just believed that it was a gradual shift rather than the mass migration usually associated with spread of culture and technology

@@matthewphillipps9304 NO!!!!!! We didn't move South. We've always been here and we didn't come from no Central and West Africa. That Bantu migration theory created by that white man is a big lie and it's just a damn theory based on false very very minor similarities in words which in most cases doesn't even have the same meaning. You so called sholars and historianss need to stop pushing those lies and what is factual and even in our oral traditions and also well documented is the migration happened the other way around where people here moved to Southern, Central and East Africa. THE LIES NEED TO END!!!!!!!!!!

The Aardvark in BURUNDI, Central Africa, appears in folk tales as an ogre.
