Turns out this isn't the original recording. The first known recording was actually by Mike Berry, but it was only available in the U.K. until 2019, when it was re-released on a compilation album called "Drift Away." The song itself was originally performed by Mentor Williams around 1970 (the lyrics were copyrighted in 1970), but he didn't release an official recording at the time.
"Drift Away" is a song by Mentor Williams written in 1970 and originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz on his 1972 album Reunion. Mentor Williams was a country songwriter, and John Henry Kurtz was an actor and swamp rock singer (Source:Wiki)
