    I had an interview and was told that whomever could solve their problem, would be their first choice. During the interview, I didn't address their concern because I needed time to think about it. I also didn't say that I was thinking about it. It's now a week later and I have given the situation some thought and would like to let the interviewer know what solution I would offer. I feel uncomfortable doing this but think it would show that I have given their problem some thought. Thank you for these very useful videos and please wish me luck 🎉

    Thank you so much. I have a big interview on Monday. My first real interview actually (outside of jobs as teen) my adult life up until a few years ago, I ran my own riding and horse training facility. Life, as it will threw me a curve ball, and at 40 was divorced, farm and horses sold and moving into an apartment with my dogs. I needed to work so got a job in walking distance at a large gas station/store. For months there I just couldn't wrap my mind around all the change.
    But I "decided" to love my job..and worked my butt off. A year ago they created a lead hand position for me. And Monday I interview for manager.
    4 people from head office all of us on a computer screen. Frig, I'm not even sure how far to sit from the camera as not to make to obvious it's not something I do much of.
    But thank you again, I'm feeling far more prepared after watching. (Watching about 4 times actually!) You are very good at what you do.

    Im happy to have found your channel! Should you send a follow up thank you email to a recruiter if you just had a brief 10 minute call before a more formal interview? What if you don't have an interviewer's email, should you just not send anything or should you look them up and try to find it or send a Linked In message?
    Thanks for your help! The whole job search process is always such a strange song and dance, who made up these rules!!

    • @LifeWorkBalance
      @LifeWorkBalance  Před rokem +3

      I would send a follow-up email to the recruiter because it keeps a positive impression in their mind, which could be important if the recruiter has any say in the hire of the position!
      If you don't have the interviewers email, try looking them up on LinkedIn OR even asking the person who scheduled your interview for their email (you can say something like, "I'd like to send a follow up thank you, would you mind sharing their email with me?).

    Thanks for the great tips for interviews. How do you handle a question regarding an involuntary termination due to health issues?

    • @LifeWorkBalance
      @LifeWorkBalance  Před rokem +1

      Has this question come up for you during interviews, or are you just trying to prepare yourself for it? I would recommend not bringing it up unless the interviewers bring it up. It will likely come up worded like, "why did you leave your last job?" and you can be honest, but don't give away too much personal information that could lead to discrimination. If you were terminated, involuntarily, due to health issues, you can say you were let go because of health issues that began to interfere with your ability to do your job. BUT THEN follow up with how those health issues won't impact your ability to do THIS NEW job.

    Thanks for the information. I have an interview tomorrow and I’m going to put these points to good use.
    I do have a question about over letters. My college professor told use that cover letters are pointless and aren’t really important to have. The interviewer is going to ask “tell us about you” anyway and our objective on the resume should briefly highlight what we can offer the company. Your thoughts on cover letters, are they necessary?

    • @LifeWorkBalance
      @LifeWorkBalance  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching, and good question. I actually have 2 videos on cover letters you can check them out here if you're interested:
      How to write a cover letter: czcams.com/video/nDHVwS15t9U/video.html
      How to Write a Cover Letter to Stand Out as a Candidate *EXAMPLE INCLUDED!*: czcams.com/video/cJac51LJBl4/video.html
      I believe cover letters are important and are not a waste of your time or the reviewer's time. If your cover letter is identical to your answer to "tell me about yourself" then it would be a waste of time! I believe a cover letter can be used to give the reviewer (the recruiter, hiring manager, etc.) additional information about you to help them decide they want to interview you. Once you get that interview, then you have your short elevator pitch about what you're doing, what you've done, and where you see yourself going as it relates to this position, which should be slightly different from what you include on your cover letter.
      Hope this helps!!

      GREAT question!! Yes this is a great question to ask, though I wouldn't ask it as one of your 3 main questions at the end of an interview. This is something you can ask more as a passing, last question to wrap things up.

I'm sorry your interviewer no showed, and based on what you shared in your comment, I am not sure I would want to work for someone who doesn't take responsibility for missing the interview. Now, I am sure there is other information I am not aware of, so you may want to reach out and try rescheduling the interview, but it might be a red flag that this possible supervisor isn't willing to be honest and say, "I'm sorry, I messed up!"

    I just applied for a bank teller 1 position that “fell in my lap” just after announcing a new promotion (assistant manager) at my current job (retail). I just got promoted a week ago. 😊 I found you and your videos because I came to YT to learn a little about a bank teller’s role. “HI!”
    A former coworker of mine who works at the bank I applied to actually reached out to me and told me I should apply. She has already made her boss (the interviewer) aware of me. But TBH, I was caught off guard because this person would be the last person who I thought would refer me or even consider me of all people.
    I’ve only ever worked retail jobs since I was a teen, roughly 15+ years. This job title will be something very new for me, as I have no experience in banking.
    Any tips or suggestions for me to be successful in my interview?
    Note: I do have a little anxiety when it comes to interviews so I always fear I’ll say the wrong thing - my work ethic, skills and adaptability speaks volumes on who I truly am as an employee. “Actions speaks louder than words!”
    Thank you!

    • @LifeWorkBalance
      @LifeWorkBalance  Před rokem +1

      Great question! If it is a virtual interview, you will likely have all of the interviewers' faces and names up on your screen. You don't need permission to take the screenshot, and you don't even need to let them know you're doing so.
      This is NOT a sneaky trick, it's taking a screenshot of your screen as notes from your interview. It will help you remember whose face and name go together.
      If you don't feel comfortable taking this screenshot, you can check your email for the interview invite and see if all of the interviewers' names are listed. It will then be up to your memory to remember faces and names. If other interviewers are not listed, you may need to quickly scribble some notes during the interview or ask your recruiter for the names of those present.
      On a PC you can use the keyboard shortcut of:
      Windows logo key + Shift + S
      On a Mac, you can use the keyboard shortcut of:
      Shift + Command + 3
      PCs also have the snipping tool and Macs have the screenshot option as well.
      I hope this clears it up for you! If not, please let me know and I'll see if I can clarify further! Thank you for watching :)

Do I ask if they would like copies of my resume? Can I ask the coordinator of the interview for the names of the panel who will be interviewing me? Can I send the thank you letter by email? I really enjoy your views. They are very helpful.

    • @LifeWorkBalance
      @LifeWorkBalance  Před rokem +3

      Great questions!
      For letters of recommendation:
      It really depends. I've found most organizations do ask for references, but it isn't necessarily via a letter. They will either want to call your references directly and talk to them or they will use a survey system to get anonymous feedback (like SkillSurvey).
      If you are in your first interview and you have another round of interviews coming up, I would wait. If you are in an interview and the next steps would be to move to background and reference checks, then I would offer the letters. It can give a good preview before the hiring manager decides how they are going to collect references and could be used to sway the hiring manager to push you to backgrounds if they might be on the fence.
      Bonus tip: If your letter writers are on LinkedIn, I would HIGHLY recommend you request they write a recommendation for you on your profile.
      Regarding bringing copies of your resume:
      When you enter the interview, I would recommend saying, "I have copies of my resume if any of you would like to review it during our interview?"
      Regarding asking for names: ABSOLUTELY! They may or may not tell you and that's okay. Chances are they will share the names and that can help you be even more prepared!
      Regarding thank yous: YES! You can definitely send thank yous via email. Sometimes snail mail just takes too long and if you're interviewing virtually, or the interviewers are remote workers, it could be really hard to find a physical address. Sending an email immediately after your interview is a great practice.
      THANK YOU for all of your questions and for watching my videos!! I wish you the very best in your next interview(s).

      Great question! I actually have a video on how to handle gaps in employment here: czcams.com/video/58oc0HXLuMw/video.html
      One of the best ways to do this is to list your "Relevant Professional Experience" rather than ALL of your experience. Gaps may be a result of unemployment OR they could be a result of being employed in an unrelated industry.
      If this question is asked during the interview, it can border on "illegal" because it could lead to discrimination. Focus on the work experience you DO have and focus on your transferrable skills. Here's another video on transferrable skills: czcams.com/video/2B-SATGV58E/video.html

    What to do if the Recruiter Calls and Asks for me at the introduction and the first Question they ask before going into interview me they say "Hi! How has your Job Search and Interview going so far?"

    • @LifeWorkBalance
      @LifeWorkBalance  Před rokem

      Good question - I think they might just be starting the conversation and are being friendly. Be honest! If this is the recruiter, they'll connect you with the hiring managers but likely won't be making the hiring decision. Let them know what's really going on, but in a professional and tactful way! You want to spin the conversation in a positive direction and come back to your excitement to work for this organization in this role.

    I feel l like it’s worthwhile arriving extra early but I think sitting in reception for 15+ mins would be too long.

    • @LifeWorkBalance
      @LifeWorkBalance  Před rokem +2

      I agree! Though, in some metropolitan areas, or in areas experiencing bad weather, I would rather be 30 minutes early than even 1 minute late! It is definitely situational and 15 minutes feels like the maximum I would want to be early too.

    • @justlittleolme7977
      @justlittleolme7977 Před rokem +1

      @@LifeWorkBalance I have usually aimed to be there about an hour early if I’m going into the city or about 15 mins early if I’m walking from one part of the city to another… but then I sit and read nearby so I arrive 5 mins early.
      When I’ve been the interviewer or am meeting clients and they arrive 15 mins early, I feel bad keeping them waiting until our scheduled time if I’m caught up on other work so I try not to do that to others.
      I guess it also depends where one is, what the role is and whether there are many other candidates (like an interview day). That would be different to what I’m accustomed to because all of the interviews I’ve done (as interviewee) during the last 15 years have been where I’ve been approached by the firm or a headhunter.

      @@justlittleolme7977 Absolutely! Those are all great things to consider and what you have to share is valuable to anyone who will be looking to interview. No matter the circumstance: be early to your interview! Sometimes 5 minutes early is sufficient, other times 15 minutes can work too.
