@@genevievemarie_ yes but why cinco de mayo and not 16th of September? It is our independence day, why took another date for a battle that wasn’t as relevant as the independence war and essentially has the same symbolism and meaning. it is weird like I said that they felt they needed to pick up another date than that. I really like the analogy about midway or el Alamo being the most important date to celebrate their culture for Americans abroad.
@@genevievemarie_ i know what it means now for the Chicano community, it’s just it’s origin as why picked that holiday which seems strange, we even went on to lose that war against the French and we would get back our country only because they left for a Europe where they were having bigger issues. I insist they should have picked the 16th of September, makes more sense in every way, even the 20th of November (revolution day) makes way more sense.
@@luisbernal7689 I'm not sure why they picked it over the others. Why they felt a special affinity for that battle. But they did. Perhaps it was the French's link to the Confederacy during the American Civil War which was going on during that time frame. During the start of the Chicano Power movement, we were in midst of the civil rights movement. We knew what the Confederacy stood for. It represented the racism and oppression they were facing every single day. So, while I don't for sure know why. They felt an affinity for that particular battle. We can't go back and change the date they picked. They never called it Mexico's Independence Day, like the woman in this video is making fun of them for. I think it's important to take history into consideration. The plight people faced and the progress they made. There's still so much work to do, but they accomplished so much. So many people from my mom's generation were not even taught Spanish because of the consequences at the time. Now we're able to speak it a lot more freely. It's seen as beneficial to speak Spanish. And yet so many who lost their language as a result of the racism get made fun of now.

Growing up in the early 90s and 2000s the Chicano people of Colorado would still have parades with and festivals. We'd dance folklórico. People would drive around all day and night, honking horns, with giant Mexican flags on their cars and trucks.
So maybe it seems weird and silly to people now, but to the Chicano people (especially in the 60s and 70s), it was a celebration of culture and their fight too.
Awesome job Ana .

When I was growing in a central valley farming town in California, 5 de Mayo was more of a celebration of Mexican Heritage.
Same thing down here in San Diego at the school I went to. Everybody just learned about the heritage on that day in school but it was funny cuz my best friend growing up was Mexican and her family was from Central Mexico and they never really understood the point of that day. It was rather funny listening to her gma complain about that "holiday".

It's true
That’s true, to us it’s just another day.
In America, they find any reason to party and get drunk. That day is just considered a holiday day to drink and has a theme to it.
“They” half the damn country doesn’t even drink…. Who is they ? Your Mexican holiday should stay in Mexico

We went to Cancun for our honeymoon and didn’t realize until we were down there that we would be there for Independence Day. It ended up being a ton of fun. They had Mariachi performances, a bunch of traditional dishes and candies, and an even a lucha match. It was at a resort, so I know it wasn’t the most authentic, but it was still really cool to get to experience it all.
Fall in Mexico is beautiful. I hope I can go back some day!

I was in Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza, capital of Estado de Puebla on Cinco de Mayo and they had a big parade for it. Calle Cinco de Mayo changes to C. 16 de Septiembre at Zócalo.

Reminds me of the time a former co-worker once asked another former co-worker of mine (who everyone knew was from El Salvador) how she celebrated Cinco de Mayo. I was still fairly new and upon hearing that, we gave each other the side eye and loled so hard after the gringa left. Their kids even played with each other so we were wondering why she would even ask that.
This is hilarious!
Loooooool😂😂😂😂
I honestly didn't know that was what cinco de mayo was and I asked my husband why we americans celebrate it and he doesn't even know 😂😂😂😂
It is a celebration of a battle of Mexico's win against the french. However, America celebrates it more than Mexico. The countries independence day isn't until September.
De facto Cinco de Mayo is when Americans celebrate the invention of tacos and margaritas.
It's a drinking holiday. That is really it
@@carlycrays2831 It’s also a day to celebrate the preservation of Mexican American culture.
You captured the energy of several of my coworkers over the years with this.
Thanks for the subtitles 😅
The singing in the background 😂😂😂😂
We had a celebration for cinco de mayo in my Spanish class, and I'm new to learning it, but my teacher explained pretty much this video!
You are beautiful but combine the humor and confidence, you are shining a star waiting to be discovered.
