  • Dental health is just as important in pets as in people, though you can’t trust your cat to brush his teeth on his own. The truth is up to 70% of cats over the age of 3 have some degree of dental disease. In addition to keeping up with your cat’s annual wellness exams, you should consider brushing your cat’s teeth or using other dental products to protect his oral health. In this week’s video, you’ll learn the basics about dental products for cats and see our top picks in several categories.

      Hi Mallory, I checked out the link but it didn't have what I was looking for: How often should I brush my cats teeth? Also, should I have a tooth brush for each cat or can I use one and wash it each time?

    My cat loves the taste of Virbac chicken flavored toothpaste, and jumps onto my bathroom counter to ask for a tooth brushing session every night before I start my night time routine. He’s very food motivated, so it only took him about 3 days to get into this habit. Before I started brushing his teeth daily, I was so worried that he will hate me for it, but turns out he makes sure I brush his teeth even when I get lazy.

    Interesting, good info. Thanks for posting :) One thing - the small tooth benefit of kibble isn't abrasion - it's blood circulation. Wet food stimulates zero blood circulation throughout the gums. Good blood circulation requires regular chewing and crunching, which cats were made to do. Good blood circulation assists with good mouth health. I've done 40+ years of animal care - pets, farm animals, and wildlife rehab, and I've been researching raw since 2009. Raw feeding including bones is the absolute best for teeth. However, ***I don't take a raw diet lightly*** - All but one of my pets are on partial raw. All except one get to choose from raw, fresh cooked, wet, and dry kibble, portioned out carefully twice a day. I have one recent rescue, Major PUR, a Siberian, who came with a wound to the roof of his mouth. He'll need two more surgeries to get it closed, and it's a challenge getting food into him in the meanwhile. He does the best with partially frozen, broken up raw. I really hope more people will *learn* about raw and consider it - I can see the benefits. But it's extremely important to RESEARCH FIRST! A lot! Doing it wrong can do serious damage. In all my years however, I've seen many pets get sick on manufactured kibble and canned food - for me it's only been the cheaper kinds. None of my animals have had bad results from the raw, and it's the best thing I've ever seen to clean their teeth. I don't go to extremes, I see the value of all of it. I do TNR with feral cats, and i'm very glad there's easy to buy and use kibble for the farm folks and other people taking care of all the cats that lazy losers dump on them. One of my cats is a farm feral who was starving because she was rejected by the colony, and the farm wife begged me to take her or she wouldn't survive. Masquerade will ONLY eat kibble, that's it, and she's absolutely gorgeous and healthy! Major PUR would get very sick on just kibble. They're all individuals. For toothpaste, I use Verbec C.E.T. toothpaste, and ALL my pets LOVE the chx flavor. Makes it so much easier to brush! Thanks for sharing your experiences.

      How to feed my cats raw bones safely?

    • @Bubbaluv8
      @Bubbaluv8 Před 5 měsíci

      @@wandacollins9437 The easiest is chicken wings. I give them a couple right when I get home from the store, then freeze the rest. I just take a couple out the day before to thaw a little. I give a couple times a week. Wings are good. You don't want to use weight bearing bones, like leg bones, as they're too dense.

    I have always know dental health for cats is so important yet so overlooked because brushing teeth for most cats is a battle. I have 3 11+ yrs cats and all have tartar and red gums. I took my 1st cat to my new vet and it was about $1000. That included three extractions. I know some of you said to shop around but my cats are very stressed in car rides and they are my kids, so I will pay the costs. But now I will be more vigilante on their ongoing dental health. This was some great information and I will look for some of these products.

    I was flipping a house 3 years ago and this big tom cat showed up and he head looked huge because of all of the testosterone...like a lion, I've never seen a male cat like him. The neighbor said he was a stray and of course I took him home. I took him to the vet because he had really bad breath and the vet had to sedate him and pull most of his teeth, his lower left jaw has teeth and the rest is gone. Poor thing. He eats wet food and does fine. He is around 11 years old now and I will be brushing what is left of his his teeth. I had him neutered and he's like a dog now, very loving.

      I think with brushing your cat's teeth, the most important thing is to try your best. It's not easy to get access to your cat's whole mouth every time, but with consistency, you should be able to get a decent amount of coverage and help to make your cat's mouth cleaner than it would be otherwise.

    FWIW, I use a surgical toothbrush from Curaprox for my cat. It’s a little red one, meant for people who’ve had mouth surgery or radiation so it’s tiny and super soft. I really like it (cat doesn’t. 😅 But she would hate others more, I think). For toothpaste I use Aptus Bucacat and she seems to really like the taste of it. I usually let her lick the majority off my hand (you’re supposed to use ~2 cm) because it’s supposed to still work and she’s really not a fan of the toothbrushing in itself. Especially on the molars. Just a recommendations for others in the EU who might not have easy access to the products mentioned in the video. 🙂

    I have tried a number of dental diets for my cat and they have really helped. Hills t/d and Science Diet oral care are quite large and force the cat to chew and produce more saliva, additionally there is an interlocking fibre technology that scrubs the tooth rather than just breaking apart like regular kibble. The Royal Canin Feline Dental Veterinary Diet is also large and has abrasive nature, I have found this one is great for cats suffering from gingivitis as it also has a chemical component which prevents plaque from forming and an additional benefit of giving very fresh breath.

    There’s also some cat toys by petstages that can help with dental hygiene, not sure how good these work, some are like rubber material and some are soft with a mesh material over, they are probably more suited for kittens, but I think any cat that chews the toy a bit while playing this could help, my cat has a couple of them, they seem really well made. Obviously it’s best to use the multiple methods such as a cat toothpaste, brush, dental treats and chewable toys, maybe with a bit of everything our cats teeth and gums will stay healthy

    Comprehensive and informative. No address of additives to drinking water, however. I had to cancel my cat's appointment for teeth cleaning under anesthesia. The receptionist could not pin down the cost for a procedure without problems. But upwards of $200-400 dollars is beyond my means until I pay down $1800 in credit card debt, which will take seven to eight months to accomplish. In the interim I shall employ the methods discussed in this video to hopefully keep real inflammation at bay.

      Hi there. That's a good point-while I didn't mention water additives, these can be a viable option if your cat drinks water on a regular basis. The VOHC has approved two water additive products for cats, both of which are from petEssentials. You can learn about them here: www.vohc.org/VOHCAcceptedProductsTable_Cats.pdf

    I have the same issue surrounding ingredients - there doesn’t seem to be any VOHC cat treats that don’t have fillers as a first ingredient. I bought the Purina dental treats recently and the ONLY thing i like about is its size - it’s the only treat my cat has to chew due to its shape/size (good for large breeds). Just makes me feel strange that it requires up to 17 puffs daily of something mostly made of corn. Looks like good ol’ brushing is the best way to go (my cat thinks Virbac is a giant churu tube and loves the stuff)

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  Před 3 lety +2

      I agree, R C. The fact that 17 treats per day are necessary to deliver the benefits definitely takes these treats down a notch. Thank you for commenting.

    My kitty loves chewing on silvervine sticks. I never hear much about silvervine, but it seems to me like something that is probably beneficial to his oral health, since the wood scrapes against his teeth, he uses his whole mouth in the process (front teeth to nibble and peel the bark, back teeth to chomp, and middle teeth to gnaw and chew), and it's natural, so I don't need to worry about questionable additives or ingredients. It's also a source of fiber, so probably helps with his digestion. The biggest benefit is probably that he doesn't need any help from me.
    Any thoughts or opinions on silvervine or other similar types of natural chews either overall or just in terms of dental hygiene? Should i squeeze some kitty toothpaste onto his sticks for good measure?

    Hello:) I want to try and start brushing my cats teeth, I have two cats. I was wondering, if I want to use a toothbrush, should I get them their own toothbrush or can I just use one for both? And also, should we be brushing their teeth twice a day like with humans? And if not, how often! Thank you so much:)

    thank u. great ideas and thoughts i got tiger her teeth cleaned and 829 dollars but she had couple extractions unfortunately. the vets brought her to in past while expensive did not do a thorough job checking her teeth. there are water additives also but some cats wont like them. that is an issue i have with tiger. best to always get the cat x-rays with facility so the d.v.m. can see gum and any abscess or anything-so crucial. so treats is a bummer as they contain lot of bad stuff i learned from your video but just hoping they might help tiger some. never knew about them leaving a film-wow. she wont let me brush. i don't think most cats will unless trainer earlier and they get used to it not fearing it but see it as fun. i will get her a good cleaning each year. there are great board certified animal dentists too but they are not cheap of course. u r awesome thanks for a great video love your shirt too.

    On a serious note, two out of three of my cats need some dental work. Sadly, those are the same two who have other health issues and I am afraid of the anesthesia. It is difficult making these judgement calls.
    Lighter note, Wessie has always appeared to be cooperative in these videos, but based on his body language, I am guessing if he could do his own rankings this one is at the bottom. It has been helpful for us cat parents though.

They are now 10. I am putting chubbos on restricted wet diet. Both have lost about 1.5lbs in 4 months. Meal schedule is 3xday and both cats are more attentive and interactive. I wonder if ɓrushing her teeth would be enough at her young age or should I get her a professional teeth cleaning. Do most people start professional cleaning at age 3? Banfield has a pretty good wellness plan that includes dental cleaning, maybe I'll start there and add at home brushing. I hope she lets me...

    Can you do a video reviewing calming cat products ? I’m looking to introduce my cat into traveling but she is very skiddish of loud sounds . Whenever she goes outside if it’s very loud outside she will immediately come running back to me /inside the house . So I don’t want the introduction to riding in the car with me to be too stressful . And of course if calming products are not okay/reccomended by you that would be valuable information to us as well ! Thank you !

    I got my cat about 2 weeks ago, lately his breath has started smelling pretty bad and his poop is orangish sometimes smelling absolutely horrible.
    I realize my cat has a horrible fiet and limited the food and spread out his meals more. But his poop is not soiled and breath has only gotten worse.
    I would try wet food but i dont want to hook him on something potentially bad for his health since hes already 13 pounds.

  • @indoorcat443

    I agree with Jackson Galaxy on this. Putting your cat under stress everyday trying to "brush teeth" for what is very minimum results is not worth the little benefit it gives. Brushing teeth won't remove hard tatar. I am surprised you didn't look at more natural options such as raw bones or silvervine sticks.
