Not manufactured at all. Team Jess for me. I thought Rory was the best version of herself with him/when he was around. Most importantly, he showed progress while most characters regressed. I'll take the damaged boy who manages to pull himself together as an adult any day.
Season 2 is so great because you can kinda see the timeline of Milo and Alexis falling in love with each other in real life and then they started dating irl towards the end of season 3.

My point is that most likely food was very scarce for them and they didn’t meet Sookie until later. Also, god knows when Lorelai finally reconciled with her parents. That’s why you always see them gorge themselves. They don’t care about nutrition, they care about surviving due to their past poverty.
