    Rina Yang is a part of a new wave of cinematographers, whose work is so far predominantly focused on shooting short form content. In this episode I’ll break down her philosophy on creating images and show how, using a range of technical film gear, she is able to create a contrasty, punchy, textual visual style.

    Usually on Cinematography Style I feature big name DOPs who have a long track record of feature film work. Today, I thought I’d feature a cinematographer whose work I personally love, which strongly resonates with my own photographic interests. Although Rina Yang is now beginning to shoot more long form work, it’s her commercial and short form work which made me start to admire her style. As I mainly work in the commercials industry, I have a respect for good short form cinematography, which I feel isn’t always analysed enough.
    Hope you enjoy the video!

    @zacharyantle7940 Před 4 lety +25

    I very much got a similar vibe from Adam Arkapaw’s work on True Detective (and most of the rest of his work in general), I kind of think of this style as the “modern indie” look, imperfect and kinda dreamy :)

    Your videos are a combination of valuable industry experience, technical knowledge, and easy-to-understand presentation I've yet to come across anywhere else. I'm so pleased to see Rina Yang here! I love her work and her dedication to help raise up minority DPs like herself. I appreciate you including younger DPs alongside well-seasoned cinematographers. I'd love to see more newer generations of DPs like Andrew Droz Palermo and Marcell Rév.

    I thought back lighting:In lighting design, backlighting is the process of illuminating the subject from the back. In other words, the lighting instrument and the viewer face each other, with the subject in between. This creates a glowing effect on the edges of the subject, while other areas are darker.

    • @tatehildyard5332
      @tatehildyard5332 Před 2 lety

      That’s direct back lighting. As long of the light source is behind the subject at some capacity (whether it be off to the side, in/out of frame, or directly behind them, it counts as backlighting.

      Usually based on interviews with the DOP or, in this video, from looking at behind the scenes footage or images to see what gear they used and how they chose to use it.
      Also from my experiences working on set and handling gear I can usually get an idea of how images are shot based on the look of the film itself.

      Gear is most often rented by the production company before each job. The director of photography is able to provide a list of the gear that they want to use for the specific job, and then the production company covers the rental cost for it. This way, each job can have gear that is specific for the artistic vision.
