    His granddaddy told him of Ww2 how he brought grandma home they were waiting to celebrate his return in San Antonio. Last verse is about him getting off a boat in San Diego from Vietnam, nobody there to welcome him home.just about the difference from WW2 to Vietnam on how our soldiers were treated

      I just listened again ,..You are exactly right.
      Grand dad story was about ww2 and how he found grandma and came home to live happily ever after. Completely opposite experience for the story teller from Vietnam.

    Oh my brother, you are listening to musical magical history with Steve Earle , Shane MacGowan, and the Pogues. Historic legacy

    He has a great backing band on this song, The Pogues

    The story behind the song is as follows. The title Johnny Come Lately is a derogatory term in referencing how the US didn't join WW2 until after Pearl Harbour got attacked. In the opening line the American pilot bragging saying he will buy the round because the US are in the war now and here to save the day. The first person is the grandfather, who was a pilot in WW2, met his Northend girl when the Bltiz was on and brought her home, and they came back to San Antonio and were greeted to Fanfair. The second person is the grandson who went to Vietnam and came and landed in San Diego. There was no fanfare for them, and they were treated poorly by the public. He's showing the contrast between both wars.

    I'm at work and couldn't make out all the lyrics.
    It could be about all theaters and all years of war when "Johnny Comes Marching Home."

    Don, thanks so much for doing my request I really appreciate it. I now declare you an official Canuck for doing this one for me. I ask a lot of reactors to react to different stuff BUT You are the only one who has done more than one request for me. Once again thanks....

    Good one, check out Ian Tyson Cowboyography, Gary Fjellgard, Handsome Ned for other unheard songs and Michachl Martin Murphy for other inspiration.

      @RockN2Country, Thanks! There are so many amazing stories that country music artists do, don't you agree? I love the ones that pull at your emotions. Jamey Jonhson is amazing for that. His talent is amazing. One of my favorites by him is called The Dollar.

    Steve Earle has had some Irish influence in some of his songs. But none more so than Galway Girl which has become an iconic song over here.. He is very well liked in ireland.

    It’s 2 different people. It’s a story about a son remembering his dad fighting in ww2 and came home to a heroes welcome. Then he goes off to Vietnam and comes back to nobody caring

      The song has the WW2 guy being the grandfather of the Vietnam Character..doesn’t make much sense as much as father and son though

    So many people call the album "Copperhead Road" a rock album, when the title track is the only one even remotely leaning that way. The rest is pure outlaw country

    Thank you Dougieyou for the great request - very interesting song, and so well performed by the great Steve Earl. Thanks Don for the interesting reaction!

    In this song the two wars are just used as a comparison, both in fighting and returning home. This song was written by Steve Earle. Please consider refraining from using the cliché "real deal", as I am still upset because you also said a grammy nominated song for country was not country then turn around and give it a low rating. Thank you for the reaction.

    • @roddow612
      @roddow612 Před 2 měsíci

      Typically these days "grammy nominated country song" means pop-country (ie. Not the "real deal")
