  • Eric's nightclub Liverpool Bands - OMD - Echo and the Bunnymen - Frankie Goes to Hollywood with McCulloch, Andy McCluskey, Jayne Casey, John Power and many, many more.
Eric's nightclub - with bands such as Deaf School, Echo and the Bunnymen and OMD leading the charge. But the City hadn't finished there. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the Farm and the La's. There was Cream and Biscuits - well half a biscuit, and half a man - dance and surrealism and still it hasn't stopped. With Wombats, Zutons and Coral, the Liverpool scene keeps on reinventing itself. There are many featured bands, not named here.

The Bunnymen made beautiful, brooding dark music.
I saw them when they toured Ocean Rain in 1984 and they were amazing.

They were so much a part and instrumental in the scene. Even having a residency in winter of 1980

Saturday matinees, 17, watching the Clash, Joy Division, Echo &, Siouxsie &, Iggy Pop, Buzzcocks, Magazine, and on and on£1 to get in! Incredible. Why is Alan Erasmus not mentioned? Tony Wilson at the bar. ACR. Robert Fripp talking to punters. Police raid(s), everything. Fun, laughter, sex, friends, happiness.

Mark pthyian was in our year at school. In 1982 he left to be the tea boy in amazon studios. A year later he was more hands on, he was paid more on a day rate than our headmaster. He was a mad damned and stranglers fan. Really good keyboard player too. He's won 2 grammys, 1 for Coldplay

@@eightiesmusic1984 Not sure. only remember China crisis from the African and white, days. I remember being impressed he got a job in amazon studios. At the time it was like Liverpools version of strawberry studios where all the big Liverpool bands recorded. Bunnymen, OMD etc.
Mark has produced and engineered a lot of bands and acts, he deserves it. He's was, is very very talented and very unassuming that's a thing I remember about him

@@jazztheglass6139 I think Gary Daly has sung his praises in recent years. I once trecked over to Amazon to ask them if they had any opportunities of work at a time when I had ambitions to be involved in music. It must have been 1990 or 1991. It took me ages to pluck up the courage and I was nervous as hell when I spoke to someone at the front desk. Ludicrous really in hindsight and a memory I had totally forgotten until reading your post. I remember seeing some discs on the wall and people playing pool in the background. I saw Amazon as such a big deal because of its pedigree in recording bands. At the time I was a huge OMD fan. They recorded The Pacific Age there at least in part. Needless to say I was told nothing doing and in years to come my only connection would be with an Amazon of the shopping kind purchasing items from the online behemoth, including no doubt CDs recorded in the studio in Kirkby.

@@eightiesmusic1984 You were young, you gave it shot. You have to be cheeky in Liverpool.
Right time, right place a bit of cheek, it goes a long way. That's how I got free admission +1 to the Royal Court concert venue in the early eighties, Alan Williams ( the beatles original manager ) knew my mum. He had a share in it. Saw U2 right before they became famous, The Stranglers,Soft Cell, Wah etc.
      I miss Liverpool

@@jazztheglass6139 I wish I had had more confidence but that said for everyone who succeeds in music there are plenty who are chewed up and spat out by the industry as no doubt many would attest. Even those who make it often have tales to tell about how they were treated over contracts, etc. I am glad it didn't go anywhere. It must have been great to see those concerts. I like all of the bands you mention. Story of the Blues by The Mighty Wah is a great song and Pete Wylie had a string of great songs that followed in the eighties. Come Back is great and it was sad to see that Josie Jones died a few years ago.

A new scene is badly needed in a British or Irish city now ..

It's so fractured, I agree. But I disagree about needing a new scene. It's just so much harder to find what you like because there are so many trying to make a go of it.
