    That sound usually indicates a dead battery or a loose connection you should get a battery tender or batteries will die if left on their own

      Yes I agree, I've had this same issue a couple of times with my Kwasaki zzr600 having left it in the garage a couple of months during winter.

    The washers on the banjo bolt should be one on the the other one the other side of the brake pipe (just an observation) good job

    I've owned a load of bikes over 30 years, from CG125 to KMX 200, GSXR''s XL700 Transalp , 1200 Bandit etc. But at 48 now I'm so Happy with my 99' XJ600, it does everything I need and they are bullet proof if looked after. Its the bike I can do any mechanical repair to, parts are a good price, they are comfortable and 60 bhp is enough to overtake, but not enough to get a licence ban here in UK!

    I‘m also not a mechanic, only a hobby wrencher, but some observations:
    - Brake fluid is pretty aggressive. If you do this on a more precious bike, you should cover the surroundings with paper towels. And better wear nitril gloves.
    - Get a torque wrench.
    - Never separate new pads with a flathead, you can easily damage them. Better use a piece of plastic.

      Aluminum foil will work well, can be molded or shaped to your needs, and is not easily taken by the wind.

    I hope that the brakes are now working properly. I would try to start it with a new battery, not necessary a brand new one. :)

    That brake caliper was far from a new part. It will probably need new seals after a year or two.
    Order extra seals now so you won't have to wait later buy genuine Yamaha seals. Strip down your old caliper and get it soaking in brake cleaner in a closed container for a few months spraying it down weekly with more brake cleaner, after that cleaning it up should be easy.

    If the battery has been sitting around with no charge, the cells may have gone bad and it’s not holding the charge anymore. It sounds like the battery doesn’t have enough power to turn the starter over. It’s time for a new battery in my opinion. 💸 😎👍

    I bought battery charger for cars and bikes in Lidl for ~20eur like a month ago. It shows battery charge and charges it safely. Batteries drain with time and especially if installed in bike. Also it is a good idea to charge battery after winter. Consider getting one.

    ..maybe jumper cables from the car to the bike? That might sort out the battery issue. AND, the Beilagscheiben on the brake line should be one top - one bottom. Sorry Bud, one more bleed.

      If you jumpstart any bike from a car, please never do it with the car engine running.

      @nedflanders4699 a running car produces too much current and will damage your motorcycle's Regulator/Rectifier, and probably melt a few wires. Always when jumpstarting a bike from a car, leave the car engine switched off.

    Just a few notes: ideally you should use some anti-seize paste (copper grease) on the threads long bolts that retain the pads, on the faces of the pistons - just a light film and on top of the pads just the steel bit that rides against the spring. The long bolts love to pull out threads. In addition, you should take some soapy water and an old toothbrush and wash the old brake dust before replacing the brake pads. Another thing about the copper washers for the banjo bolt - either buy new ones (there are generic copper washers available) or anneal the old ones (heat them with a gas torch/lighter until cherry red and either let them cool or dunk them in water) before installation to guarantee a good seal. There needs to be 1 washer before and one washer below the banjo.
    You should invest in a cheap multimeter - a charged battery should show approx 12.7 V and while cranking should not fall below 10V. That rapid clicking sound comes from the starter relay - the relay is good however the battery cannot supply the needed voltage to turn the starter and dips below 5-6-7V, which is not enough to keep the relay energized - contacts open, battery voltage goes up, the relay energizes and repeats the cycle... You could jump the bike with the car`s battery and standard jump leads - another possibility is a short circuit that happens when the starter relay closes - gust trace the thick wires coming off the relay and verify that the positive is not shorted to chassis - then try the car battery :)

    You could short the two large poles of your starter relay, there may be a large startling spark and your starter may engage, but it will tell you if your battery is the problem or not. Have the rear wheel raised, or bike in neutral for this test, short with an old tool as the arc will damage the tool surface.

    5:05 LEBENSGEFAHR! / DANGER! 2 copper rings on the bottom of the banjo bolt / brake hose bolt . This will give a leak . I watched the video till the end of the rear brake job, but could not verify if you picked up on it. You MUST have one copper washer below the brake hose, and one on top of the hose, and then the banjo bolt goes through. Great job brother! We all had to start somewhere. I really enjoy your videos! Best thing is to get new copper washers every time you loosen them

      You're welcome! Watched the whole video in the mean time and ectrical issues on these old bikes can be a real hassle! ( 1991 vulcan1500 owner here ) There is usually a main fuse somewhere, if absolutely nothing works, start there, and check the other fuses as well,,, just pull them out and do a visual inspecion to see if any of them have blown, you can literally see the little wire in the fuse being interrupted if one should have blown. To check the battery, just get a cheap multi-meter from Bauhaus or something :D big plus side to having a multimeter is that you can literally diagnose the entire bike with it. i have some basic trouble shooting knowledge to share if you're interested!

    Lead acid batteries just suck. Buy a cheap AGM battery as it will have a good shelf life.

    I've just replaced the brakes on my XJ as well, but luckily, my callipers and rotors were still in good shape, so I only needed to change the pads and the brake fluid. Ride safely! Peace.

    It’s the battery. I had the same noise when trying to start my Transalp. I bought a new starter relay because I was sure the battery is almost new (previous owner claimed that) and It was for nothing. The battery was neglected and it died very quickly. I bought a new one and the problem is gone.

    Cooles Video wiedermal! Sollte das bei 5:15 nicht Schraube:Dichtung:Anschluss.Dichtung sein?! Du hast hier beide Dichtringe unter dem Anschluss. Bei den 3 Motorrädern bei denen ich schon die Bremsschläuche getauscht hab war das jedenfalls so...

    one step forward, 2 steps back... this pretty much covers my experience working on classic bikes. especially on the brake calipers. you fix one thing, suddenly 2 other components decide to break. also coming from cars, it's pretty annoying that there is pretty limited supply of exchange parts for classic bikes. for a lot of bikes there are only used components left which very often have a pretty hefty price tag on them. annoying af!

    My man do not take me wrong but, when you have no clue about brakes you really shouldn't mess with them.
    You might hurt yourself or others if breaks are not done properly...
