Genius interviewing. He put Andrew Lloyd Webber, who is awkward, in a situation where he was most comfortable talking.
So the comments appear to be divided between show tune lovers and UK citizens who despise his politics.
And comedy bang bang fans
:'D I hadn't made that connection!
What, no representation from the show tune lovers who hate Andrew Loyd Webber?
I LOVE that Stephen is a Jesus Christ Superstar fan. I love his effort to try to sing the song.
Stephen's got pipes.
Perfect intro for Juda's song! Loved it!!!
I have a feeling like the Late Show is just going to turn into a musical
I'm down
Well it *is* on broadway
You got proven wrong there 😂😂😂
As long as Stephen Colbert is singing, I am fine with that!
This just felt like going back in time. It felt like the old days of the 70's variety shows or Mike Douglas or even Johnny Carson. Classic. LOVE STEPHEN!!!
It's so cute when Stephen tugs his ear to break his nerves. Someone help me please I can't stop watching him sing :_:
Remember this comment you made 5 years ago
Is anyone else thing of "late night - the musical" where James and Jon are duelling late night hosts and their bands get in on the act as well!
All about Stephen yelling “JESUS!!!!!!!”
i loved how absorbed in the music Stephen gets.
Andrew is one of the most passionate artists of all time! Some of his shows I don't like but he writes them because he wants to write it. And he's a musical genius as well! Jesus Christ Superstar will always be my favorite musical!
Aww that was so sweet! I know ALW is divisive for both his music and his politics, but The Phantom of the Opera is my favorite musical, love Jesus Christ Superstar and like a lot of the songs from his other musicals, too. And I love Stephen! So this was great.
Heaven on Their Minds is also my favorite song from JCS!
JEEEEZUSSS 😂
Colbert should have Sondheim on
TheNhbWarrior omg it would be incredible
@@fearghadecleirnichiannaigh3345 it'd be great because Sondheim can actually play piano
@@disgruntledcashier503 umm is that a pro-sondheim ALWebber drag because I STAN
Disgruntled Cashier You dare.....
omg. stephen has a really good voice!
love this! you can tell Stephen is just tickled the be next to Andrew Lloyd Webber!
I would be too. Yes, he's probably not very popular politically (we all saw you vote to cut tax credits for the poor, Andy), he's super-awkward in his mannerisms, and it's highly likely he's lifted a phrase or three from other pieces that other people have written and put them in his own tunes, but the fact remains is that Andrew Lloyd Webber encapsulated my youth and was the backbone of my musical theater career all through high school, and love him or hate him, he redefined musical theater for at least two or three generations, which is saying a lot.
_"I think Andrew's greatest musical idiosyncrasy is that he writes a jolly good melody, which is more than a lot of people do."_ -Tim Rice
Phantom of the Opera was Andrew Lloyd Webbers masterpiece.
Phantom was epic
Agreed, POTO followed by JCS.
I love me some show tuns!
Man, this show has class
I'm obsessed with Stephen's voice ohmygoodness
I saw all of the musicals. I had a tape of Jesus Christ Super Star. I would play it at Easter time in Camp Aflabaum to the young boys. They loved it and they learned about the story of Easter. Great music for all ages. Thank you Llord Webber.
2:39, pretty good
Any other theater geeks out there singing along??
Did not know he such a good singing voice
1st rock opera...Jesus Christ Superstar. Really very special!
Stephen is living his best life and it's so deserved.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was my childhood. I love that movie!
I was a kid when I first listened to Joseph & his technicolor dream coat. This brings tears to my eyes seeing my childhood hero
ok, i found out that he sucks cos he voted down food stamps but, to be honest, i just wish he played more tunes like that. I LOVED this segment. I'm so conflicted.
There are those that think it hurts the poor, not help them. One can debate it, either way, doesn't make him "suck"
I can't believe he wrote Jesus Christ Superstar at 22. What the hell man I'm 35 and can barely tie my own shoes lol
Did Stephen ever mention Lord Webber flying home to the UK to vote for the cutting of tax credits for the poor?
***** Probably
+Samuel Cooper No he didnt mention it, I think because the Late show wasnt on during the tax credit vote, I know for certain John Oliver did.
This is amazing! Fantastic interview!
Absolutely love this💯 good songs great guest
JCS is his best work IMHO
Great!
But where are Cats?
The Musical Lover probably at the Jellicle Ball! 😸 🎶
Just the classiest show
Contrary to popular belief, Perón was not a dictator, he won three free elections by overwhelming majority, and was actually the victim of a violent coup that dropped bombs on the city of Buenos Aires causing hundreds of civilians deaths. This were your two seconds of history facts for today ;)
Pity you studied history for just two seconds. You could have learnt a lot more if you kept on studying.
classy show
So f$$#$$$* amazing. Simply the most brilliant man in the world. Bravi
Awesome!!!!
Oh wow it was helped by a Bob Dylan line?? I love both writers but I never thought there would be any connection between JCS and Dylan!
"Hello It is I LOOORRD ANDREW LLLLOYYDD WEBBER" quote from a little show called Comedy Bang! Bang!
Love Jean Baptiste's "new look at it".
genio me hiciste llorar cuando nombraste mi pais argentina graciassssss
Surprised at all the hating about the singing of one guy, who never said, nor pretended to be a great singer. He is having fun--singing is for everyone, even those who sit at home, would never sing to anyone, and knock a guy doing his best. Grow up.
Bravo!!!)))
Jon back at it again with the BACKPHRASING EVERY TIME HE SINGS
Love that Jean Batiste has the balls to sing behind Andrew Lloyd Webber himself. Or maybe he is just a little confused about how these tunes go. :P
Did anybody mention what Webber voted on? I'm not sure if anyone has.
Monkeywithagunn
Well we know if he did he would of voted on All I Ask Of You from Phantom because it's the only melody he's truly made by himself.
Stephen's ability to listen and to not interrupt his guests is so important.
Wish they would've sang "Memory".
soo awesome ^_^
Show tuns!
mannnnnnnnn the entire show should'v been andrew doing his songs
Cool!
Should had Stephen sing music of the night
I would prefer Stephen singing Sondheim tunes, but this is ok. 😀
I would imagine Sondheim being a guest soon.
jealous. wish I could live on that stage.
The best song from Elvira is a new Argentina. Fight me
Colbert: “... jEsUs”
Stephen. Juan Domingo Perón and his wife Evita were not dictators. JDP was elected in democratic elections in Argentina three times. 1946-1952; 1952-1955 (derrocated by militars) and 1973-1974 (until his death). I can't bealive an inteligent man like you make that mistake.
Mussolini and Hitler were elected, too. I guess we should stop calling them dictators as well. Or shouldn't we?
Jon Baptist back phrasing so hard
Makes me laugh on that board with his hit musicals, Aspects of Love not on there as was a major flop there and losing whole money in like 2 months and theatre was signed to play there for a year!
Yet it was a hit musical in the West End, and a hit on UK-Tour!
Jon 👏♥️🎶
Say what you will about his politics...Joseph was the first musical album I memorized back to front.
the first play I ever saw was Cats. the original I loved it but the remake is not the same. my parents absolutely hated it tho
“a time when Britain was very much in turmoil” Stick around folks, the good old days are on their way back !
3:01 Perón was not a dictator! He was elected at least 3 times by an overwhelming majority!!
So what? Mussolini was elected, too. And so was Hitler. Wouldn't you say they were dictators?
Is there a chance that in the long run Peron did more good than harm for Argentina? Labeling him a dictator is too simple and a convenience for those opposed to his leftist policies (like paid vacations). The Heritage Foundation has a piece labeling Peron a dictator, but they wouldn't criticize Trump's dictatorial tendencies. U.S. conservativism has become dominated by unprincipled individuals that are focused on maintaining an economic elite while using conservative issues like abortion to sustain the needed political power. Peron shifted power from the economic elite to the working class. Maybe it was as unprincipled way to enhance his power but at least it provided hope for improvement. I guess that improvement was limited by Peron's corruption and more so by unprincipled right wing opposition. Maybe Peron wouldn't even work for progress with a principled opposition. At least he didn't use his power for war, so I see reasons not to associate him with Hitler or Mussolini. Instead, Juan and Evita are to me a flawed Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. The Roosevelts had privileged upbringings and stabler political institutions to mask their flaws, leaving little to inspire Andrew Lloyd Weber and thus we have his "Evita", while "Eleanor" was left for others to compose.
very interesting point@@lifegood1712 in regard to what @duketgg if he was or not a dictator. OK, so he was elected by an overwhelming majority and Argentina's democracy was working in full capacity (congress filled with opposition, justice system more or less independent). Argentina had nothing to do with the Third Reich in no way.
So, there were people that didn't like him and called him a dictator, fair enough, but that does not make you into one. My guy feeling is that in the US the call dictator whatever leader doesn't play ball with the Department of State.
👏👏♥️♥️🎶🎶
I don't particularly like Andrew Lloyd Weber's music. I certainly disagree with his politics. But just seeing Stephen doing his musical theater jam, heartwarming. Thank you.
He music is so diverse tho.
WHERE IS HIS TAMBOURINE
Goose bumpy stuff.
Stephen is a FAR better singer then Jean Baptise.
+Rayvn7 Who's Jean Baptiste?
And Gerald Butler
jesaaaaaaaasss
Why is andrew so shy?😕he is genius
Ooh, typo in the video's name. Someone's gonna get fired.
Great until they brought out the guy who couldn't sing and had no time... He was awful...
They missed Cats! 😡😡😡
At this point, it’s name has been ruined by the movie.
his name is webber a shanda
that black guy sings rather well
Evita
peron was not a dictator
Yes, he was.
d a d d y
2:20 constantine did better! lol
Puccini doesn't like this.
Oh no!!! colbert! I loved you until you said Peron was a dictator!!
He was.
What is this??? \WHo is this??? on the right site???
First comment!
*sigh*
I'm so cliche
That is if I got the first comment, hmm.
haha. Looks like you did!
Idiots in the comments don't understand British politics. Webber voted against having the house of lords going against the sovereignty of the house of commons. This is the political principle that has defined the English tradition. Regardless of whether you are for or against the liberal policies detailed in the law, to institute precedent for the lords to overstep the total authority of the commons would be direct despotism.
Please, do not force your ideology, whether it is conservative or liberal (most likely the latter if youre reading this), in a fashion akin to a nondemocratic fascism. Let the people rule themselves.
+Nick “TNFox” Rhodes It isn't the function of the Lords' vote that people are commenting on here, it's Lord Webber's behaviour, flying over for the vote (and claiming he had other business in the UK).
z4k Why would so many liberals be so fucking pervasively involved in the context of transportation to a Lord's country to vote? And why does taking a plane back to his country constitute criticism? Am I expecting too much for people to be reasonable?
+Nick “TNFox” Rhodes Webber's return to the UK for the vote was the first time he had voted in years. He just "happened to be in the UK and decided to vote". As he said himself, he is not required to attend the House of Lords. Why did he choose to do so on that particular occasion?
z4k Why is that important should be the better question.
+Nick “TNFox” Rhodes It shows Webber to be the nasty person described in the comments that you originally criticised. I think we're done here.
Suprisingly leonidas (gerard butler) did better lol
Hate the poor, I dont care Im a spam face millionaire
😴
i don't recognize us celebs coz i was born and still live half way accros the world! but u guys should target educated Indian market, trust me the people who stole jon oliver's idea are making millions per episode here.
So this guy turns into James Corden as well? -_-
He’s so overrated.
Singing is terrible!
Webber finds nice hooks and recycles them. The real genius of his shows was Tim Rice...
ALW is a terrible accompanist.
Don't like musical theatre, don't like his politics.
This show needs a real musical director. This dude is a joke.
Ken Martin I don't think he can hear you over the success of Phantom, School of Rock, and Cats
ALW looks like he’s trying not to scowl at the guy changing his rhythms.
