Sopron is the oldest and most beautiful city in Hungary, located near the Austrian border.
A small river, Ikva, flows through Sopron and flows into Lake Fertő. The city center has been preserved in the same form as it was built in the 16th-18th centuries.
The city of Sopron was founded by the Romans in the 1st century. n. e., and at that time the city was called Scarbantia. The name Sopron was first recorded in 1153. In the 13th century Sopron received the status of a free royal city.
In 1529, soldiers of the Turkish army sacked the city. Sopronu became part of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom under the protection of the Habsburgs. In 1676, there was a fire in Sopron, after which it took decades to rebuild the former city. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Sopron was an international city within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Hungarians, Germans, Croats, and Jews lived here.
After the First World War, Sopron was supposed to go to Austria, but the city residents opposed it and in 1921 a referendum was held, after which Sopron remained a Hungarian city.
During the Second World War, the city suffered greatly, and almost the entire large Jewish population of the city was exterminated in death camps.

Wir sind ein paar Tage in Sopron gewesen und waren geschockt, von der vielen kaputten Häusern. Es sieht aus, wie bei Kriegsende.
Durch den starken Strassenverkehr und Abgase, ist eine schlechte Luft, die ich gesundheitlich nicht vertragen habe.
