I'm pretty much fluent speaking Korean and have dedicated a *huge* amount of time practicing and learning new verbs vocab and grammar. All of these languages are extremely hard to learn for English speakers.... The best advice I can give anyone trying to learn any of these is that it's a journey and there's no such thing as "fluent in 4 months" or whatever idiots say. It's literally a life long journey and best thing to do is not to get upset because it doesn't matter if you're mastering tones, Characters, Korean grammar, Vietnamese pronunciation which is just f ed up , they all take years of time to master. It's been about 4 years or something for me in my Korean journey and I'm still not exactly fluent and make mistakes sometimes. Or I can easily communicate but it sounds a little bit off as far as native speakers can tell.

I am really excited to learn Mandarin chinese and have begun my journey a few months ago because I love the new writing system. I wanted to learn Vietnamese but I found it was really hard to pronounce the tones and the words in general compared even to Mandarin Chinese so I would definitely not recommand Vietnamese as the first language.

I didn't even consider that! That's a good point. Vietnamese has a tough phonology. Thank you ❤️

That’s is quite interesting for us Vietnamese people to see that, I did not expect our language to be hard to pronounce

I'm learning chinese for career reasons and because I like the language too but I also really want to learn japanese since my grandpa spoke it but he passed away before I could learn the language properly but I'm scared I won't be able to learn 2 languages at the same time.

Yeah, the pronunciations of Korean Japanese and Vietnamese are closer to Cantonese than Mandarin!
Personally, my first language is Cantonese, 2th is Mandarin, 4th is Japanese, 5th is Korean and 8th is Vietnamese. I also think that if you know one or 2 languages of these languages, it's very easy to learn the others!
Hope you will learn Cantonese someday!😊

To be honest, sometimes I get the urge to learn Cantonese, but I don't want to move onto another Chinese language until my Mandarin is strong enough 😂

I started learning chinese (mandarin) a little over 2 years ago, then I decided to study korean at the end of last year. I'd like to study Japanese to someday (not near future) and I hope that knowing Chinese characters and Korean grammar will make it easier.

I would like to have a small note for those learning Vietnamese,
people can't use a counting system like this (9:10) for casual conversation.
Example: I want to buy two books
    - Tôi muốn mua "nhị" cuốn sách -- incorrect(people may understand what you mean but that's weird)
    - Tôi muốn mua "hai" cuốn sách -- correct
-- In brief, nowadays, "nhị" means binary and "hai" means two
Old numbering system (Vietnam is no longer used)
(không, nhất, nhị, tam, tứ, ngũ, lục, thất, bát, cửu, thập)
    Chinese-Vietnamese : 空 , 一, 二, 三, 四, 五, 六, 七, 八, 九, 十
    Chu Nom: 空, 壹, 貳, 叄, 肆, 伍, 陸, 柒, 捌, 玖, 拾
Current numbering system (from a long time ago)
(không, một, hai, ba, bốn, năm, sáu, bảy, tám, chín, mười)
    Chinese-Vietnamese : 空 , 殁, 台, 巴, 奔, 年, x, 罢, 渗, 㐱, 迈
    Chu Nom: 空, 𠬠, 𠄩, 𠀧, 𦊚, 𠄼, 𦒹, 𦉱, 𠔭, 𠃩, 𨒒

I recommend people should learn Mandarin Chinese first since it is 2nd popular in the world if you compare it to English. Moreover, if you have mastered Mandarin Chinese then you will have a base for learning Japanese which uses a lot of Kanji characters. Other 3 languages left, you can choose to learn them if you need them in business or just for entertainment purpose.

Cantonese does not belong to ancient Chinese. It belongs to ancient Vietnamese. Except for the north, only the Wu language in the Jianghuai region in the south is the descendant of ancient Chinese

Middle Chinese split into the Yue languages (including Cantonese), along with Jin and Mandarin. Old Chinese branched off into the Wu languages and the Min language. All of these languages are Sino-Tibetan, while Vietnamese is Austroasiatic. Two completely different language families.

also Vietnamese language had been influenced by french colonization too into writings. so it sometimes helpful that there are latin alphabets with chinese writing structures too. and it is mostly based on sounds languages in neighboring countries and possibly islands close by. so it can be done too. thanks for the info sharing your experience in learning languages. good day
