Honda Rebel Noisy Valves

  • This is a Honda Rebel after the valves were adjusted. The adjustment was the first step I had taken in doing the 600 mile service. Adjusting the valves was the only thing I did. They seem to be noisy and I am asking for opinions on why they would be so noisy - much noisier than before the adjustment. I have gone back and checked them several time and insured I set the clearance correct (.003 inches) and torqued all the bolts down to the specification given in the Honda Rebel Service Manual.

I didn't see you check it again after you tightened it down. They will move again. I know this vid is old but someone may may watch in 2021. Thanks

If they were actually at .003, it wouldn't make that loud clicking noise. I can think of 2 possibilities . Either that was not actually a .003 gauge. Don't mix up inches and MM. .003 is inches, which equals .08mm. An 8 and a 3 can be mistaken for the other on a set of older feeler gauges. I doubt it would run at .008, but if it did it would make a whopper of a noise. The other possibility is that the valves were not completely closed. I noticed that he did not check for the T mark on the flywheel. I don't either, but I have done this job a million times. I noticed he stopped turning just as the valve appeared to be closed. It should have been turned just a bit further. The valves will remain closed through several degrees of crankshaft rotation. If you don't use the mark on the flywheel, turn the engine over a few times and get used to how long the valves stay closed. Try to do the adjustment right in the middle between when they close and when they open. Also, I never use a torque wrench on valve adjuster locknuts. A long time ago I broke a couple of adjusters doing that (that also goes for the oil drain bolt) since I have been a mechanic for 36 years, I have developed a feel for tightening nuts/bolts that don't require much torque.

This happened to me, the way i got it back to normal was leaving it sitting (to cool down) for two days, bought new gauges advance auto parts (003in) (not ebay) and torqued it to 7 ft pounds. this was on a 2007 Honda rebel 250. of course i made mistakes and had to replace two of the screws (tappets) and nuts bought them from (jacks small engines .com) but that was because i over tighten the screw and nut rendering them useless. refer back to this video to compare the new sound because if you are like me, you will be scared you may have made another mistake. however recognize the thumping is no longer there just a normal ticking.

I have resolved this issue. I bought a new set of feeler gauges and used a slightly different procedure for adjusting the valves. Back on the road!!!!!

Same issue here but it was a cam bearing that got worn down on me. So much that the cam was uneven on the head causing my valve clearance to go outta whack. Also some manuals say up to 0.004 intake and up to 0.006 on exhaust to be optimal.

did you set the valves when engine was cold not used that day. Also its a new engine I bet after 2-3k it will be quieter. Also its air cooled and doesn't have the water insulating the noise, air cooled are always a bit noisier for that reason. Don't worry its new, just ride and enjoy and like I said after a few k it will be better.

Check your model year and do what the manual says. Honda designed this engine to certain specs, keep it within those specs. Lots of "general mechanics" on YT.
