    In September I’m heading back to Switzerland from the USA (Las Vegas) for some hiking. It will be my 12th time visiting since 2009, and needless to say I’m very fond of all things Swiss! ❤ 🇨🇭 In June I did the canyon swing in Grindelwald and I’m hoping to do mostly via ferrata with some canyoning on this next trip. I’m 63 years young and hope to come back many more times! I purchased your book and can’t wait to read it! Gruetzi!

    Very very good! I'm thinking of hiking this weekend from Schynige Platte to First, I'm assuming it's less "sketchy" than this one 😁

      Yes, Schynige Platte is totally safe and fine for kids.

      @@SwissFamilyFun I did go, took me 5 1/2 hours, very nice! Didn't expect to find a nice hut with a hot soup along the way. (Berghaus Männdlenen) Funny thing: a sign at Schynige Platte says 6 hours to First but about halfway through the sign pointing back says 2 hours and the sign pointing to First says 2 1/2 hours - something doesn't add up 🙂

    Did that with descent via Mesmer to Seealpsee. After Altenalpturm it becomes much easier and safer. Before it i definitely felt danger, but not fear surprisingly, just respect for the conditions. And the vast, open and steep mountain side below me was breathtaking.

    Do you recommend via ferrata harness with double clip set up? Would this make is safe for not experienced hikers/kids? “Experienced hiker” is pretty subjective in Switzerland.

    • @timvanhofstraeten3965
      @timvanhofstraeten3965 Před 3 měsíci

      Via Ferrata harness is useless on this trail I would say. I have done this trail, there are some cables and ladders on the trail, some parts are just steep without any cables. If you are afraid of heights and you are not sure to descend a small steep path with steep cliffs, do not start this trail. You will need good hiking boots (absolutely no sneakers or less). Experienced hiker in this would mean able to descend and ascend a mountain on steep small paths and not afraid of heights. It would mean it is obvious for you that you do not start a hike without good hiking boots. And it also means that you would turn back if you do not feel safe when you are on the hike. Do NOT underestimate this hike for the steep dropoffs, small path and steep path.

      Instead i would recommend a hike to Bollenwees Cabin in the same area, very beautiful, google it

    Hi, thanks a lot for the video and for such a great and helpful blog! I wanted to ask you about this trail - how suitable do you think it will be to walk there with kids (6 y/o)? I saw children on your video, but still, it's a bit difficult to understand the level of risk on that stip part of the path. It's not our first hike and not the first one for the kids, we actually like more challenging paths. However, there's a difference between a scary path and an actually dangerous one. Scarry, means if you walk slowly, you can path without a risk. Dangerous means, a wrong step and you might fall down the mountain. How would you evaluate it? Thanks!

    • @timvanhofstraeten3965
      @timvanhofstraeten3965 Před 3 měsíci

      I would not do it with a 6yo. A particular section is really steep with big drop offs and the path is small at parts. One wrong decision or not being concentrated and you can fall several meters straight down. You cannot put your child on a leash, as there will be walkers coming from the other side too. It would be (at some points) impossible to pass if you put your child on a leash. So if your kid is not used to hike in dangerous areas, then do not start this trail. this is a dangerous path at places. You can hike up the Mountain Cabin on top of the mountain and then go back where you came from, that is very safe. The Ridge itself is dangerous, one wrong step and one can fall with severe injuries or death as a result. Do not do this hike without good hiking boots (no sneakers or less).

    Hello, my wife and I are not great hikers so is there another trail that is easier and less dangerous with great views of Schafler mountain??? Thanks for your time.

    • @SwissFamilyFun
      @SwissFamilyFun  Před 2 lety

      Of course 😊 so many fun, safe, easy trails in Switzerland. Maybe Saxer Lucke would be a good one for you. Dramatic views like this minus the extreme danger. My 73 yr old dad did that hike with me.

      There are basically 2 main options (with some interconnections) ...one (right hand from ebenalp to schäfler) is SAC category T2 trail, so it's the easier one. Left hand, scaling a bit below the tourist route, is category T3, means more exposed, more rope sections etc...the family walked further from schäfler to altenalp, which is a T3 ridge. So, if you turn around at Schäfler, walking back to Ebenalp, it will be all T2, so perhaps doable

      The path is a little bit dangerous, but is a small part, I think you are able to do, if you do slowly. It's not the most difficult hike in Switzerland, for example the hardergrat/brienzergrat is 10x hardest

      I feel sorry for your two year old, who, in their helpless toddler years, has no choice whatsoever but to rely on the decision making of an absolute moron like yourself who can even contemplate that question.
