It cost £67 for a Kop season ticket back then and I was privileged to be there that day. After watching Rush and Dalglish bang the goals in for years, it actually got a bit repetitive. But when we signed Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge and Houghton, it added a new dimension to the team and for me, this lot was the most exciting Liverpool team of that era
Robert C Lynch I was there that day too and I agree with you; Rush and Kenny were incredible but Barnes, Beardsley, Aldo and all really created such excitement that they were the best team of a fantastic era. It was a privilege to watch them.
I remember in autumn 1987, Liverpool bought Ray Houghton and I was thinking why have they bought him, they have Craig Johnson. He made his debut coming off the bench around October time and I immediately went, ah, that's why they bought him! Houghton became my favourite Liverpool player, along with John Barnes.
I started going to Anfield at the beginning of the 87/88 season, and was stood on the Kop that day. Think it cost £3 at the gate. Great times. Amazing team. I was able to get a season ticket in the paddock for the following season :)
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player move like Barnes did (before he got fat!). The way he beat two men for his second goal was so natural; never even broke stride.
on the last goal, note how Beardsley made a run around the back/left, which drew the second defender momentarily away from Barnes. That's just how Dalglish always did it. Those are the things that the very best teams/players always do.
Back then, it was easy to take things for granted. But now we can reflect on 30 years of mediocre players and appreciate what we had during the seventies and eighties - and what we have now!
When Ronnie Whelan was Southend player manager I went to watch Grimsby play at Southend and his legs had gone by then but he was still spraying 30-40 yard passes all game like it was no effort at all. Superb to watch even though the game ended in a boring 0-0.
Barnes was a footballing hero of mine. I learned so much in my game, watching him play as a kid for Liverpool. One of my school mates used to say "you play like John Barnes" lol. But Beardlsey was another I learned from. The two were a deadly combination. It was just a shame how it all needlessly ended in 1991. Liverpool started that season really well but it went seriously downhill at the turn of the year when Beardsley forced a move and Dalgliesh left. That was the beginning of long, dark times for Liverpool.
There were rumours of that, but I've never seen any suggestion that he forced a move. And it would make no sense to have left in August 1991 because he fell out with the man who resigned in February 1991.
A lot of the team was the same as the one that won the double in 1985/86, but I agree that the Barnes/Beardsley team deserved a double too (and came close 3 times).
Yes and Jim Smith (RIP after today's sad news) the then manager of QPR commented after the game how they were top equal because they had the same number of points. Not withstanding a far inferior goal difference and having played 2 games more.
I don't think it was about figuring out a way to play against the system. Liverpool just had better players, as proved over the season. No disgrace in losing to that Liverpool side, which was one of the best in the club's history.
@@steskilly3660 probably Salah as he's a left footed winger like Barnes but still not in the same class as Barnes although Salah is definitely 1 of the best players in the world right now
Salah doesn’t make it Barnes is the only one who makes the best players, he is untouchable, if the English football managers knew anything the England team should have been built around Barnes, it wasn’t because of racism. Now I’m sick and tired about how black people have been treated so unfairly, but John Barnes was clearly the top footballer in the world, and the team should have been built around him, such a great player. The footballing hierarchy couldn’t accept the fact that Barnes was clearly the best, and John is such a gentlemen that he accepted all that was thrown his way.

Lucky sods
The day after the huge hurricane. Fantastic game. Fantastic Liverpool team.

If John Barnes had been in today's Liverpool squad, those 2 Spanish clubs clubs have put a bid of more than 200 million pounds for him.
Barnes was always my favourite as a youngster. What a powerhouse! Champion!!!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player move like Barnes did (before he got fat!). The way he beat two men for his second goal was so natural; never even broke stride.
He lost his pace when he had Achilles’ tendon injuries
The way he'd already decided to beat the second man was outrageously good. Changed direction in mid air
Bit random to see you popping up on the comments of a football video Paul!, been a long time subscriber to your channel mate.
Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge remind me a bit of Salah, Firmino and Mane.
Hope we win the title almost 29 years after those greats won it in 1990.
Bingo!! 😀 🍾⚽️
2020 was the year mate. Lets hope we do it in 2022 again
Aldridge really wasn't technically gifted at all, more of a pure goalscorer
John Barnes nowadays wouldn't cost less than £100m, what a player
Barnes was pure silk, glided over the ground. Great player.

RIP Jim Smith
I've watched a few of these eighties Liverpool games. Steve McMahon was better than i remember and Ronnie Whelan. Really consistent good passing.
Yes, I didn't appreciate their talent back then as a child.

that liverpool was playing the type football that is played now, in 2019-2020
That was some team that season.
Brian May was bloody good at football...
Haha! Love the long sleeve shirt too!
Good old Skippy. A very skillful player who only lacked a powerful shot.
Freddie Mercury wasn't bad in goal too....
Vintage Liverpool the crown paints kit the anfield kop full john barnes in his pomp they were a great side in 1987/88
This is the game when the Kop really took notice of what a special player Barnes was ...my favourite all time Liverpool player
I think we knew what a player he was when Liverpool played Watford and we bought him
One of the best clubs sides ever and the 87,88 team possibly the best liverpool side ever. imo.
Fukn Barnes eh just wow 👌 every time he had the ball to his feet automatically my face wud smile 😃

Beardsley didn't force a move, he was sold to Everton by Souness against his will in the summer of 1991.
@@DaveWallerLFC Oh Ok. I thought he fell out with Dalglish.

This team was utterly excellent. Shame the double was not won even once. So close over the 4/5 years this cycle ran....
A lot of the team was the same as the one that won the double in 1985/86, but I agree that the Barnes/Beardsley team deserved a double too (and came close 3 times).
RIP Motty.
‘Barnes won it, he won it from Brock… still Barnes, that’s a fabulous individual goal.’
Both Barnes finishes on his right foot. Barnes' favourite team QPR over the years 15 goals v QPR.
I think Barnes said he supported QPR when he arrived in UK as a child
If i remember correctly after this game we went to win the leauge, This game was between first vs second and it was 7-8 game
You're right. We finished the season as champions of England, but lost the FA cup final to Wimbledon 😢
Yes and Jim Smith (RIP after today's sad news) the then manager of QPR commented after the game how they were top equal because they had the same number of points. Not withstanding a far inferior goal difference and having played 2 games more.
Blimey, the mullets on display here!😂
And to think, the goalie went on to play for England, lol
Seamen in goal
Rangers were on an epic run prior to this - I guess somebody figured out a way to play against rangers system
I don't think it was about figuring out a way to play against the system. Liverpool just had better players, as proved over the season. No disgrace in losing to that Liverpool side, which was one of the best in the club's history.
Aldo, Barnes and Beardsley or Mane, Salah and Firmino? Close one!
Ahh unfortunately not even close
There’s a natural goal scorer in der
And I don’t know which one of them can touch Barnes or Beardsley ...love them all like ..

At least David Seaman's hair wouldn't get anymore embarrassing...
