Phoenix nights was the funniest and best thing peter kay ever did!! Once you get into the characters its comedy gold, one of the best comedies ever!!

I'd forgotten a lot of the nuances in the series and I wasn't sure if the aniseed flavoured gum might somehow become involved as well.
Clinton Baptiste is currently touring in his own show. Brilliant character.
Peter Kay allowed Alex Lowe to carry on the character and yes he makes live appearances - spot on with the Derek Acorah connection.

Phoenix Nights is one of those series where you can rewatch and notice loads of subtleties you missed first time.
Such as the Ford you see outside, slowly having its parts stolen as the show progresses. Don't think anyone's pointed that out yet
As "Max" is ordering the diver's watch you can hear him in the background saying, "I can swim" over the phone, brilliant. There's an outtake that shows it more obviously.

The references to Kieth Lard was that he was supposed to have been caught having a sexual experience with a dog. Hence all of the dog jokes. At the end of the first half the phrase "dog rough" means feeling tired and over worked, but the joke falls on Keith ....as in dog reference........
Think King Boomer missed that whole ongoing joke...
The Fire Cheif in episode is actually based on the mannerisms of the real life Fire Cheif of Bolton where the series is filmed, he didn't take the joke very well 😂
My mum was a teacher in Bolton at the time this episode came out. She said that none of the teachers were able to keep a straight face when he came to give fire safety talks after it aired because they'd got his mannerisms spot on.
@@finncullen My dad was police sergeant at Astley Bridge during that time so had actually met Mr Laird, I remember him rolling in laughter when this episode aired and he explained after that it was definitely based on him despite that note after the episode. Correct me if I'm wrong as it was a long time ago but didn't he also try to take action against Peter and the production team as his reputation took one hell of a knock 😂

The ongoing joke about him drinking from a vase is that he is helping himself to drinks from the optics behind the bar, which he can only reach with a vase since he has been in the wheelchair. This was shown in Episode 1 and has continued since

@ KingBoomer 13:15 he said "I'd watch yourself down there if I was you, Keith. It's dog rough" implying it's a bad situation for a fire inspection. And he used that term because the town heard a rumor that Keith shagged a dog. So 'dog rough' is a double entedre to both make fun of Club Phoenix as a competing business, and Keith for what he allegedly did.

When you're done with Phoenix Nights you could move on to Max & Paddy's Road to Nowhere; a spin-off featuring the wacky adventures of the two doormen.
Highly recomend after Phoenix Nights watching the spin off series to it "Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere". Very funny series of the two doormen in Phoenix Nights buy a motorhome and travel around the UK getting into all sorts of trouble.
Dog rough can refer to many things. If you have a hangover you can feel dog rough. A woman who isn't that attractive can be described as dog rough, or as in The Phoenix Club, dog rough means outdated, undesirable, trouble and a reference to Keith Lard fiddling dogs

Keith Lard first appeared in ‘Eyes Down’, one of a series of films commissioned by Channel 4 and broadcast in 1999, Kay wrote six different ones, from an angry ice cream man to ‘In The Club’ which was essentially a prototype for Phoenix Nights.
The one most suitable for a series was chosen and though some of the other films were really good, one based in a struggling Northern Club had the most scope
Despite their denials, Lard had a similar mustache as well as job in the same town.
Kay has always based his characters on people and places he knew, admitting that the disgruntled employee of the bingo hall portrayed in ‘Eyes Down’ was a lot like him in a similar job.
But with Keith Lard, hilarious as it is, he seemed to overstep the mark.
If you get the chance to see ‘That Peter Kay Thing’, the series of films, highly recommended but unlikely you can access them.
I brought my DVD of it 20 years ago and there was no fall out from Keith Lard when broadcast as few saw them, as opposed to Phoenix Night 0:26 s three years later.
I know there are some of them on DailyMotion but not sure if all episodes are on there. The Icecream Man Cometh is still hilarious.
In the club, the phoenix nights pilot and Eyes Down Kieth Lard's introduction. That Peter Kat thing was brilliant. As well as the Ice-cream man cometh there also was at the top, about a self-obsessed pop star.
Yeah the mini episode was based in a bingo hall, and again peter kay played multiple parts in all these shows - there was also one based in a motorway service station

18:51 the big glass is actually a vase and he uses it in episode 1 to get himself a drink. Because the work man and put the spirits to high for him he used a vase to get it.

Keith Laird, who the character apparently wasn’t based on, was a fire safety officer for Bolton council (where Peter Kay is from) and looks a lot like Keith Lard. But no, the character wasn’t based on him👀😂
Laird used the phrase "fire kills in minutes, smoke kills in seconds" which Kay used in the show. That was pretty damning evidence despite Kay's denials and in the end, Laird got a payout as compensation.
Another great reaction KB . All the dog joked were because Keith Lard had been accused of ' interfering 'with dogs. The jokes start with Den Perry introducing Keith as " and now here to take the LEAD " , " UNLEASH our next guest "OUR NEXT GUEST and " His BARK is worse than his bite " . Den is played by Ted Robins who is the uncle of Emily Atack , who played Charlotte in The Inbetweeners .
Ted Robbins (like all his sisters too) is a cousin to Paul McCartney.
All the dog references are because Keith was charged with interfering with dogs.
Just to let you know as a massive inbetweener fan that you are ! The Den Perry character is charlottes from the inbetweeners uncle in real life, her mum is also in one of the future episodes. Ted robbins who plays the character is also first cousins with Paul McCartney.
They had to pay £10,000 compensation to the real Keith Laird. You may argue that it just a coincidence, but considering the real Keith is not only a fire safety inspector too, but he works for Bolton City Council, which is where Peter Kay is from and where Phoenix Nights is set, so they had no defence for it really.
Keith Laird used occasionally train my football team when I was a kid. He was Scottish and was either a semi or professional footballer from Dundee or somewhere like that in his younger days. Decent bloke to be honest.
I worked with a Mexican guy, a Japanese girl and a Swedish guy in a bar some time ago and introduced them to phoenix nights. They all loved it. Some of it doesn't translate, but I've no idea how many jokes in Family Guy or South Park I don't get because they refer to American football, commercials etc.

Remember episode 1 when he emptied the vase of flowers so that the vase reached the spirit optics whilst sitting in his wheelchair. It became his regular glass.

the whole Keith Laird thing is interesting. Kay denied basing the character on Laird but the evidence that he did was actually quite damning, especially the fact that Laird, a fire safety officer in Kay's home city, used the phrase "fire kills in minutes, smoke kills in seconds." Laird claimed that the inference that he might be into bestiality would ruin his reputation, and Peter Kay ended up paying him damages.
I've sat through many a fire safety officer talk at work over the years and although exaggerated Keith lard is every one of them. Ha ha. Got all of phoenix nights on dvd, going to start watching them again. For got a lot of things from them, brilliant.
You really must watch the one where they held a "Family Fun Day" at the club. One of the best imho.

The joke about he can walk was shown in the original called "in the club". At the end when the club is on fire he actually gets out of the chair to shout at the fire men

Keith Lard makes an appearance in the more or less prequel to this show and Peter Kay‘s first TV series titled “that Peter Kay thing “ An episode called eyes down set in a bingo hall which is funny enough filmed a short walk from my house. One of the episodes called in the club was the first appearance of Brian Potter and the Phoenix club before it got its own series

Originally when they were writing it, they had the idea that Brian *could* walk, and he was scamming people. In the end they dropped that sub-plot, but there's still a few hints at it, like Clint telling him he can walk. In episode 1, when Brian arrives at the club he moves (off camera) from his mobility scooter to wheelchair really quickly to hint that he can use his legs!
Yes it was clever to make us wonder if he could, until the episode where Brian finds the new love of his life... but let's not go there as Brian hasn't seen that one yet so we don't want to spoil it for him!
There's some really good ones coming up. Phoenix nights came from a series he did where each episode was set in a different place. A bingo hall, a fast food place, . It was a bit hit and miss. It was called that Peter kay thing. Also max and paddy the bouncers had a spin off series too. Hope you enjoy it. Keep booming muppet man.:)

I love the fact that you are giving this series a go- it's niche but the characters will grow on you and the situations will always be silly and not implausable for a working men's club booking budget.
Please watch the outtakes from this when you're done too. It's probably funnier than the episodes

Those acquainted with the individual who inspired Keith's character would recognize that the disclaimer at the end was a necessity. Moreover, they contributed financially due to this association. The portrayal of mannerisms and dialogue is strikingly accurate, underscoring the peril of closely modeling a character after someone you know, especially if it insinuates negative traits. Alex Lowe, who portrays psychic medium Clinton Baptiste, has seamlessly integrated this character into various Peter Kay programs, as well as his own productions and radio appearances, since then.
It's worth checking out Peter Kay's series before this called " That Peter Kay Thing ".. Keith Lard pops up in that series and it is just as funny.
Completely agree, the episode The Ice Cream Man Cometh reminds me of an incident I witnessed as a kid. We had a local ice cream man who would give us free ice cream if we grassed on a rival who was operating on his patch.
One day he was serving our little gang when he heard the chimes of his rival at the end of our road, he shoved the ice cream into our hands, mumbled “you little bastard” then beeped his horn and screamed “Oi fuckface, come here I want a fucking word” then tore after him in his van 😂

As already mentioned, its worth looking at the previous series That Peter Kay Thing. A mockumentary style series of which the Phoenix Club is one episode. But he plays great characters in all of them
