  • Navy Divers make their way to an underwater excavation site Sept. 23, 2015 where a U.S. aircraft crashed into the Adriatic Sea during WWII. Divers from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit Two and civil service mariners from the Military Sealift Command rescue and salvage ship USNS Grasp (T-ARS 51) are currently supporting the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency for the recovery of U.S. Airmen who have been MIA since their B-24J bomber went down off the Italian coast in 1945.

in a lot of cases, what is left of human remains after so long underwater is usually very little. The saline atmosphere usually reduces even bone to dust.

If unable to be repatriated on land, the sea is still a noble burial place.

I guess it is just me but does anyone else see a human face at the 2:39 mark under the diver in the sea growth appearing to be looking out from within the aircraft? Everyone desires to come home. Great job divers!

You just have to wonder what would happen if the UK, France & Germany started trying to do this!
I personally know of 4 U boats (so far as we know complete with crews) from both world wars off the Cornish coast, then there are the perhaps 1600 or so crew from the British losses at the Battle of Coranel in 1914 & so it goes on!

If they know where the plain is, then they should just close the case and let them RIP. These people are abusing their money and title to desecrate a war grave. Several airmen have been buried at see, in their planes. literally pushed off the side of the ship. Are they going to go bother them too ?

I think you need to look up the definition of "war grave". This could have been designated a war grave but it was in a position to have the remains recovered.
That's what we do when we can.
