    I never realised how wonderful and interesting Cary Grant would be. I love how well you have done his life justice. His telling of finding out his mother was still alive was heartbreaking. What happens to us as children affects us for the rest of our lives. I am so glad that he found true happiness in the end. Thank you so much for posting this. I am now a big fan of Cary Grant and just watched and enjoyed the bishops wife. I look forward to watching more work from this amazing man and all thanks to you. ❤️👍🇬🇧

      My husband and I never let the Christmas season go by without watching, "The Bishop's Wife" at least once during the holidays. It's been a favorite of mine since I was 19. We love old movies, 1930's - 1950's, and when we see Cary Grant in the credits we know that we'll be watching it. We especially enjoy his movies when he was a little more mature.
      Thank God for all the pleasure he and his costars brought us. Always impeccably dressed and no profanity. When actors knew how to act! 😊

    Ms Dean, This is one of the most comprehensive video biographies of CG that I have seen. I have read Diane's book and it too was amazing (and heartbreaking). You managed to tease apart his complexities and flaws by including writings of CG and his wives across time, and this is a level of detail that I truly appreciate. In the end, we are left with these three words: kind, gentle, warm. Thank you so much. New Sub❣

      Thank you so much for your kind words, and the sub!
      I am so very grateful. I'm glad I accomplished my goal that I had going into making the biography, that people would come away truly knowing the real man (Archie Leach) behind the facade of Cary Grant, but also coming away with compassion, understanding and respect as I did. He was a flawed, deeply hurt human being who only wanted love, but had to learn how to love himself first. I'm so glad you enjoyed the biography and I hope you enjoy my future projects to come as well!
      Thank you again for these uplifting words. It means so much to know my biography has touched so many people. I'm deeply honored. ❤

    I sincerely appreciate your detailed and respectful documentation of Cary Grant. I knew some from listening to others but I must say yours is by far the more comprehensive and compassionate. We all face challenges but we are not all as famous as CG. I would not appreciate my life open to the public. It’s difficult enough how small town gossip can hurt families. I, for one, enjoyed every movie I have seen him in. He was incredibly handsome and talented. I think he was overlooked for awards because he refused to play the game and because he was very talented and handsome. Sometimes jealousy reaches farther than people realize. And now I am going to watch a Cary Grant movie. Thank you very much for your time, effort and compassion. We are always a work in progress.

    "You've changed!" That's the same thing my ex said to me as our marriage was going down the drain. It would be funny if it weren't so sad. Yes, I changed; I went to counseling; I attended Al-Anon; I grew up. Sounds like Dyan was much stronger than I was in that she was already grown up going into the marriage. Good for Dyan!!

    • @NashaDean
      @NashaDean  Před 6 měsíci +3

      There's a lot of details prior to the marriage that wasn't covered in the bio due to time constraints, but really, Dyan wasn't all that grown up going into the marriage. She was blindsided by Cary's behavior after the marriage took place, just as most abuse survivors are. Cary love bombed her during the time they were dating, told her he was "enamoured" of her, would call her and tell her he couldn't stop thinking about her, practically stalked her on a multitude of occasions, and made it very plain from second one that he wanted a seriously casual relationship with her. Meaning he wanted her to live with him and be his lover, but he didn't want to get married. But Dyan made it clear she didn't want to move forward with the relationship unless they were married as she had very traditional values. Cary eventually realized that he would lose her if they weren't married and he agreed, but the moment the engagement ring was on her finger, he began to change towards her. He became controlling and manipulative, but would continue to love bomb her until she was lulled back into a sense of security and felt safe again. He remained charming until after the wedding. The moment they said "I do" and it was legalized, he became a monster.
      Eventually, after they had been married for some time, and Dyan was coming to close to wanting a divorce, Cary intimated to his friend and publicist Stanley, " She will not leave this house until she is broken. "
      The years of trauma and abuse that he experienced as a child, plus the drugs and the affect they had on him, truly made Cary into a hurt person who hurt people. He never realized it was he who needed to change until after Dyan divorced him, and he was able to raise his daughter, and he realized that he could now give love rather than receive it. It changed him for the better.
      But he was an abysmal husband until Barbara Harris.
      And while it's true that he was not in his right mind at any point during his previous marriages and was unaware of his actions, it still doesn't excuse him at all for the monstrous things he did to his wives.
      It's good that he changed and eventually healed, but it was very late coming and he did a lot of damage to a lot of women before he finally did realize what had been happening.
      He definitely needed a much better therapist than Mort Hartman. The amount of damage that was done by Dr Hartman and his ilk is absolutely terrifying to think about.

You could buy a pass to see as many as you wanted for $5 a week . I idolized Katherine Hepburn then Audrey as well. This is an extremely interesting look into Grant’s Life, and those things/people which formed him. I’m about 3/4 through the biography, and just learned about Dr. Hartman’s early psychoanalytical treatments (‘50-60s?) of Patients, including CG, with a combined therapy composed of Psychedelic drugs and (talk therapy) psychoanalytics - a treatment that is only now being hailed as a breakthrough treatment for Those suffering from PTSD.
    (How cools is that?!)
    Having recently been informed about this (current) treatment possibility for Myself, I’ve learned that it now also includes a Group Therapy aspect - for those receiving treatment at the same time - as a crucial part.
    For Anyone struggling with extreme Trauma, PTSD and/or CPTSD… I would encourage them to look-into this option for Themselves; it’s relatively quick (though expensive), and is working-wonders for People such as traumatized Police-Officers, Fire-Fighters and armed-forces Veterans, as well as Others.

      This may surprise you, but I did all of the work on this biography on my own for the most part, the ladies I thanked in the end were kind enough to listen to me commiserate when my brain got too bogged down with information, and two of them were able to help me decide which information to include in the bio and what to leave out. But as far as the heavy lifting goes, it was a solo project. So the fact that it comes across as being a group effort is truly monumental to me.

    Wow, as a Cary Grant fan, I was shocked by this bio. His off screen persona is so alien to his on screen one, he was what is now considered a domestic abuser, controlling, narcissistic. It does not diminish his films which are great, but as a person, he is a let down - his upbringing, although sad, should not be an excuse. He did redeem himself a little by being a good dad. I wonder if he might have been a different person if he had had children earlier in his life, where his focus could have been channelled towards others rather than himself.

    • @NashaDean
      @NashaDean  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Agreed 100%, except that I dont believe explaining his childhood trauma is an excuse or should be considered one..it is, however, an explanation of what created the monster within him that he didn't learn to conquer until he became a father. His daughter taught him how to heal, which was what he needed most.
      The quack "therapist" he had in Dr. Hartman certainly didnt help him heal, in fact, hartman enabled his trauma and his behaviors towards Diane as well.
      Jennifer and Barbara (Harris), made him realize he had to love others in order to be loved back. And that's what healed him and made him change into a loving, kind and gentle man in his elderly years.
      It's a shame it took him over 70 years of hurting others and hurting himself even further in the hurting of the others before he realized that.
      I agree, I was disappointed when i was doing the research for the bio. But I perservered because all I wanted to do going into making this biography was for the world to know who Archie Leach truly was, the face behind the mask of Cary Grant. Some of the truth wasn't pretty as you know. But it was necessary to be told for people to truly know him and I feel that I accomplished that, so while it was disappointing learning the truth of his real personality, I feel rewarded in the final production. I'm very disappointed in his behaviors prior to meeting Barbara Harris and beginning his healing process and redemption. While I'm not saying I condone his early behavior at all, and while making a positive change in the future doesn't excuse past abuses, I have to say I'm not disappointed in the healed Archie Leach, who realized abuse and control was no way to treat others, especially those you love. That Archie Leach I have compassion for.

The 10 films were selected by National Film registry by the Library of Congress as culturally significant - were my favorite 10 films - except for one which was also superior - Suspicion A+++ And he was selected as #2 after Humphrey Bogart in Golden Age of Hollywood. Actually to me he was #1 can't remember more than 2 films by Bogart that I liked.

    It's amazing what the human spirit can endure and overcome. It is heartbreaking to realize the depth of his childhood trauma. One would never guess that the Cary Grant in film had demons. I am so happy to know that he rejoiced in being a father and that in his later years, his life ended happily. He had indeed become Cary Grant. What he put Ms Cannon through was chilling and her forgiveness and understanding speaks highly of her. Thank you for this excellent presentation.

    • @NashaDean
      @NashaDean  Před měsícem

      Thank you so much for your kind comments! And I completely agree! He went through so much. It’s just a shame that his therapist wasn’t any real help. And it’s even more of a shame that there were no words for abuse or mental illness at that time.
      Not to diagnose anyone as I’m not a psychiatrist, but he screams borderline personality disorder to me.
      Which, would fit perfectly because he was both abused and neglected as a child and never had his needs met.
      Hence his strong abandonment issues.
      When BPD goes untreated it gets worse and can cause the sufferer to change drastically, which explains why he was sweet to one wife and awful to the others.
      The situations of his life and stressors at the time seem to have added to his mental struggles.
      With the right therapist and proper medication today, Cary probably would have healed so much sooner, and hurt no one.
      Maybe his first marriage could have worked out.
      It’s a true tragedy.
      He just wanted to be loved but he didn’t know how to love back.
      And yes Dyan does seem an incredible woman.
      I absolutely would not have forgiven cary after treatment like that and would have gone no contact, burnt bridges forever.
      And would have kept the child from him.
      Cary was fully dangerous during his marriage and divorce to Dyan, not just to Dyan but also to himself. Its truly miraculous that everything worked out well in the end.
      I’m glad you enjoyed the film, it was truly a roller coaster 🎢 to make but I enjoyed creating it and learning what I learned. Even tho it made me cry a lot lol

    I feel so sorry for the pain he went through about his dear mum. He sounds like a deep man but I’ll never be able to accept his sending the dogs away. Just like his father did Elsie. If I was in Diane’s position I would have given him an ultimatum of either bringing back the pets or I would be leaving. He was a troubled soul. I’m also very sorry for what he went through at the hands of the gossipy columnists set out to ruin his rep. Great actor.

    Being new to Hollywood, and being tight with money, what better way to save money than invest in property with someone else until you are able to earn enough money to buy somewhere of your own,

    Why is Arsenic and Old Lace never mentioned?

    • @NashaDean
      @NashaDean  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Hello and thank you for your comment!
      In answer to your question, the reason Arsenic and Old Lace is never mentioned, is primarily because I only had so much time alotted for the documentary. I only wanted it to run for an hour and 44 minutes. The original version was one hour and 55, so this version is cut way down to fit the time constraint.
      But the other reasons was because it didn’t come up much in my research, as I was trying to focus on his life moreso than just his career; and lastly, I didn’t include it because of all of the films Cary Grant did, it was the one film he hated. He was ashamed of Arsenic and Old Lace. Felt his performance wasn’t good enough, or too over the top.
      Of course we know this is absolute rubbish. Arsenic and Old Lace is a masterpiece and his performance was superb.
      But as he didn’t like it, and I was trying to fit more of his life into the documentary, I chose to exclude it. Hope this answers your question. 🙂

    Excellent video, ,but ..... 11.38 mins.Please note British people pronounce it Nor -ich. with a short o, not Noarwich! Many British place names are not pronounced as they are spelt, so American CZcamsrs, please double-check first.

    Great biography - except I will never find Leslie Caron in any way like Audrey Hepburn. To me that’s like comparing a turkey to a peacock, both birds but that’s about it.

      I actually whole heartedly agree with that statement.
      But that's how it was written in my research and by the time recording came, I was too tired to edit it. So I just left it in haha but yes I agree with you completely. They are two very different and incomparable ladies.

    If any of what is said here about his and Dyan Cannon's relationship is even remotely true it really goes to show how much a pretty face can get away with. If this guy was a fat bald man he'd be getting crucified in the comments.
