    OK so it's Question & Answer time again people! It's been a while since I did a full one, although I know you've been enjoying the 'eSysman's Bits' single subject, short videos. It was time for a full video. And have I got plenty of questions to answer today! Filmed on my road trip from Italy back to my home in the UK, I have tried to answer as many questions as possible.
    The questions I could get to will be continued in an 'Overtime' video on my other channel: eTechman, link below.

    Years ago, while living in St Thomas, USVI, I got invited onboard a private motor yacht by the owner's personal secretary. I was quite young at the time and was very flattered. The accommodations were very luxurious, I must say. And the young male Filipino stewards were very easy on the eyes. Memories...

    Abramovich's new yacht will be the last new ship leaving the Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, the ship yard was unable to find new contracts and is expected to close at the end of 2021. 1200 jobs will be lost.

With the pandemic thousands have lost their jobs in the US and I'm guess millions more Worldwide? Clearly that will have NO effect on the World economy---he said VERY sarcastically!!!

      Not to diminish the problem for the individual, but Lloyd in Bremerhaven had to cut back to 350 FTE staff in 2017 already.

Lloyd had quite the name for re-fits, first one was the SS France into NCL's Norway in the late 70's. In 40 years of driving I only ever ran out of gas once, or almost, when I 1st got my license. Luckily I was at work, and just across the street from a gas station. It reminded me of how disasterous it could have been, and of the time we came very close in someone else's car, hundreds of miles from a gas station, in midwinter, on the Canadian prairie. Never even came close again after that!

( please forgive my terminology as I’m just an interested land lubber ) Is there a calculation or rule of thumb when building a super yacht that decides the total fuel holding capacity, I assume the owner can do as he pleases but I was interested if there was a general rule, does nautical miles come into it at all ?

    Hey i always wondered how the finances work on a big yacht. From the small things like groceries to fuel, marina costs, salary’s and other bills. Who pays it initially? Does the boat have a dedicated credit card and accountant. Hope you could give us some insight.

    • @Howard.Stern.
      @Howard.Stern. Před 2 lety

      A large boat will have a full time provision worker on the boat and likely someone else managing finances from an office on land as well. The on boat worker checks inventories on the fly all day and figures out what needs constant ordering like food, shampoo, teak cleaner, oil, and so on. And those on land might mange the salaries and negotiate fueling and other things to alleviate the captain. Even a smaller yacht or private boat might have a small company or local company help manage the asset. Especially for the first year or two.
      A superyacht basically burns bags of money every day. Hell every minute. Wasteful spending can explode out of control very quickly.

    For a Super Yacht like Octopus, does the helicopter pilot travel with the yacht. And if so what is that persons rate on board?

    • @Howard.Stern.
      @Howard.Stern. Před 2 lety +1

      If someone is choppering off and on a lot then yes the pilots live on the yacht. They will usually have their own areas of the crew quarters. Sometimes even situated near the helicopter pad or storage. Octopus is even more crazy in that there are not only full time chopper pilots that might live on board but full time engineers and operators for the submersible units.

    For your next Q & A: what permanent staff members do the yacht owners bring on board with them? For instance, do the yacht owners bring with them hairdressers; secretaries, personal trainers, makeup artists, ladies' maids, valets, bodyguards and so on?

    • @Howard.Stern.
      @Howard.Stern. Před 2 lety +2

      Personal trainers or hairdressers, massage, salon, those will all also be stewardesses who can do laundry or serve food. Same with deckhands and engineers and even the captain. A captain might literally help with laundry or food service if necessary. If someone on board can give massages or cut hair they can also serve food or clean rooms. Gotta be as efficient as possible. Like during provisioning the entire crew will help load or offload from stewardesses to even the captain if a lot of stuff is moving and they want to get the boat off quickly.
      Bodyguards will help with the ship as well if they are familiar with it and will not get in the way of other staff. The fact is that even a $200million superyacht does not have unlimited space for crew. Everyone is doubling up on some type of work at some point during the week. Even the captain.

    2. If you had the kind of money your employers have: would you have a super yacht, too? (for example, I think that if I were filthy rich, I´d rather have some kind of expedition boat than a luxury yacht, and search the Mediterranean for antique ship wrecks, just for s&g.)

A fairly common going on, sometimes it ends up in marriage but it seems to more often than not end when some younger guy who is richer and has a nicer boat makes them a beter offer.

    There are mechanical refits also. Engines, transmissions, gensets, water makers, cranes, stabilizers, etc. Also hull or major structural modifications. Could be major electronics replacements. The list is endless. That kind of stuff tends to interest me more than the "eye candy". I like the engineering and capability aspects of a boat. I tend to like the explorer type yachts. Although that is a term that is often stretched a bit.

    Wasn't President Bush Jr. making the ultimate super yacht joke: Here HE is on a 74 metre yacht with a 17 year old, and here I AM on a 17 foot boat with a 74 year old?? I forget who he was referring to, but I found it HILARIOUS.

    on cruiseships you have a morgue, dont think super yachts would have, but Carnival Cruise lines had morgues on board. Next to crew bar....ideal for yellow shots...just kidding.....

      Yes you’d need to carry a supply with you. But at least at sea you wouldn’t get too many hey-fever symptoms.

    #ROADTRIP QUESTION: #1. Do you have a captions license for a smaller boat and will you ever have your own charter boat? #2. You mentioned you are one of the oldest guys on the boat. What will you do for your "retirement" from working on super yatchs? (These questions may be in the wrong order)

    i don't see many superyachts with wood burning stoves. ive seen them in pictures aboard smaller sailing yachts. is there a specific rule against it? i imagine they'd have to be very carefully installed. it seems like it'd be amazing to chop up some driftwood and have a little fire in your cabin.
