- Manabu Orido, otherwise known as Max Orido, is well known from the Japanese TV show Hot Version and was the first drifting champion of Japan! You may also remember him from his flashy outfits, cosplay, and of course his A80 Supra during D1GP in the early 2000s. Now he is mainly focused on grip racing but is still heavily involved in tuning and the car scene in general within Japan.

So much good memories watching Orido-san during the early years, his Supra is still one of my all time favorite cars in D1 till this day. I still remember it was because of his demo run with the Supra in Sugo for one the Option videos that made me started using hood view for drifting in racing games, it just felt so right LOL.

Orido is an absolute legend in Japanese motorsport, more so than more famous drivers of the same era. I've met him at Tokyo Auto Salon a few times and came across as a very humble man, but the language barrier is a real nightmare when you're trying to communicate with one of your idols. Hopefully I can visit his garage next year when I'm allowed back to Japan.

I know he doesn't run D1 anymore, but Taniguchi and his Vertex S15 n e e d s to be on this list. I've been saving to buy an S15 to import to the States for three years. My '99 Spec-R will be on the first boat here in 2024. My first introduction to the S15 was back in 2007 when Taniguchi's red S13, S14, and S15 were on the front cover of Super Street magazine. I literally have a full Vertex Edge kit sitting in my garage collecting dust and waiting to go on my new car.

Orido-San is one of my favorite drivers i was able to meet him at one of the first D1's in Irwindale speedway. Thank you Sammit for doing a great job of translating looking forward for the next one.

I remember still looking at the vid and thinking..."why is this guy sliding the car like that? why not just race normally around the track? It looks cool though!?!" lol.
