Amateur watch repairer here: it's most likely a bezel release (that being said, the finish does look a bit iffy). On most watches, you pop the back off and the movement will fall out the back. On some watches, you have to remove the bezel to get the movement out of the front.
It’s unfortunate because it’s a detail that’s in line with the vintage aesthetic and has been very common since the advent of the watch bezel. Most dive bezels also have a notch for the same purpose but are less noticeable. I bet who ever pressed the bezel on had to do it twice, as the marring suggests a downward pry as you would to remove the bezel. All of my vintage pieces have the same mark. It’s simply a misunderstanding compounded by poor costumer service.
It look like a release cut out for the bezel, some of my vintage pieces have these, although they are more common with a front loading movement
I had a watch in the past that was front loaded. It had a notch like this. To get access to the dial or to remove the movement from the case you’d use a case back knife in the groove and pop off the bezel. The crystal came out with the bezel. The watch still had a case back but the movement and dial could not come out the back. I wonder if that is what Timex were doing here?
It's definitely for removing the bezel. Panerai have the same slit for removing the bezel but it is a lot slimmer and cleaner in execution and its on the side by the 10 o'clock so it's barely noticeable than if it was positioned between the lugs.
That customer service is totally unacceptable. It will always make me think twice about buying a Timex now.
Aggreed
I just received the grey dial version. There isn't any hole or even slight indentation on mine, so perhaps they tweaked the design. Really a beautiful watch.
Well, it looks like Timex sent a watch with a flaw to the WRONG GUY! LOL I'm really loving this piece and I'm hoping yours really does have a manufacturing flaw rather than a design flaw. I'm really hoping to find out more about these watches.
I have that hole too but mine is wayyyy more subtle than what you showed in the video. It's only a cut-out on the top piece while the lip of the bottom piece remains sharp. I didn't even notice this feature until I saw this video. I love everything about this watch except the strap that came with it.
That hole isn't a mistake or any QC issues. As some already stated, it's a cutout for easier possible removal of the bezel with the crystal. There are other watches that feature it too, for eample my Studio Underd0g Watermelon has it to...
Yeah but that's rather stupid. There is no need for big holes in the watch "for easy removal of the bezel". All other watch brands manage fine without it.
@@seybertooth9282 That's right, but there must be other reasons for this with certain case constructions, I think (cost measures one of them, for sure). There's also a reason why this crevice is located at the 12 o'clock position: the wearer just doesn't look there much often ;-) I didn't notice this on my Underd0g until a few weeks ago...
@@seybertooth9282 Not really. its the only way to design for a top loaded crystal or a one piece or monocoque case. You’re not going to push a domed crystal through the back of the case. You could do without the notch but come time to change the crystal and you end up making a notch anyhow. either way, it’s extremely common in vintage watches.
Maybe, but there appears to be abrasion ("botched rough edges") at that point.
@@seanferguson5460 3:31 you’re right on that. my guess is that the bezel was installed incorrectly or it didn’t seat properly and it had to be popped off again. there’s a gasket or tension ring holding the crystal and they can throw off the bezel if not seated. it’s unfortunate, but also a reminder that these are cased by hand.
That gap on the bezel is to aid in separating it from the case if it needs to be disassembled. Similar to the lip on a pressed on caseback.
Indeed. My MIDO commander has one too, albeit not as prominent as this on the Timex
I’m presently looking for one of these to add to my collection. I’m surprised to hear that rotor wobble/noise is an issue. I’ve noticed it in the 8000 series Miyota’s but never in the 9000 series movements of which I have many. Thanks for the great review Ben!
This video highlights my main gripe with Timex. They charge high prices for sub-standard QA and materials. I think Timex's resurgence over the past few years due to releasing their Q-line and Marlin line has convinced Timex they can coast on the first appearance of their watches instead of focusing on a long-lasting appeal that will get a wearer to keep pulling out a Timex from their watch box.
The Q's movment is garbage, I sent mine back within an hour after receiving it. The movement was impossible to set properly, the minute hand would jump forward or backward when you pushed in the crown randomly. Users on watch forums griped about it.
But their standard fare quartz watches on the otherhand have always been quite nicely made for the price. I bought a Expedition North recently and was quite impressed with the overall quality, even the leather strap.
I have the 41 mm version bought in september 2020. Although it is on the large side for my wrist, it feels right. It has been flawless so far and it is one of my favourite watches of all time. I love it.
I have owned this exact same model and color Timex Galli S1 watch for 2 months. I've enjoyed the watch and was impressed with its looks. After viewing this video, I decided to examine my watch. Surprise! My watch has a similar detent in the bezel ring in the same location on the 12 o'clock side. However *the detent on my watch is so thin as to be extremely difficult to see*. Without watching your review video, I would have never noticed it. It appears to look more like a trick of light or shadow on my watch. My watch has no witness marking or distortion to the flatness as appears on your lower case. Had you reviewed my watch as your example, I don't believe you would have noticed the detent.
Yeah they appear to have messed up my unit haha
I have a couple vintage Marlins. Love them. So I always have my eye on what Timex is up to. Thanks
Well done on the video 👏👏
That Titanic gash you refer to is almost certainly a watchmaker's access point and looks to me as though they noticed dust under the dial and had to remove the bezel to remove the alleged dust (in a panic?) hence the damage..........................
haha yeah seems playable, in my experience it’s actually fairly difficult to align a bezel notch like that one.
The elongated hole you are referring to is there to aid getting a pressed back or crown open.A knife blade fits in to prise it open. I usually see this on vintage press on watch backs. It usually is in an out of the way place like the one you showed on this watch. They are very prevalent in old pocket watches
I think you're right, but the oval rather than squared-off shaping seems like an odd choice. Anyone using a screwdriver to prise the bezel off is likely to do some damage. Very strange.
@@chrissyyeskins2883 usually referred to as a case knife and you tape off or
use a sheet of plastic between the knife and case and bezel. Ive done loads of these and one just the other day.
I know what your saying but it looks like somebody tried an axe on it
I doubt Ben is unaware of how to open a crown or back of that type though. So I doubt it's for that. Besides, Timex customer would have immediately said it's for that, instead of not responding at all.
Reviewer should have known this. So long.
I just bought the EN Field Post Mechanical. Love it!
Shame about the shitty customer service. You'd expect better from a company that's obviously trying to position themselves in Seiko/Orient territory.
It's inexcusable, as I've had a couple of issues with $40 Casios and they've replaced the watches no questions asked and haven't even wanted the faulty one back.
That's the difference between Japanese and American customer service for you. That's the same reason you'll always get treated better at a Toyota or Honda dealer than a GM or Ford dealer.
"one thing that's drawn you into this video outside of the catchy title" i really didnt notice the title i just hover over the thumbnail and was like DAMN THATS A TIMEX?
Sorry,, but a Timex for that price? It had to go wrong! It´s just not their league. The so called "customer service" is phenomenal indeed. I wanted to have a manual for one of my Timex...I am now waiting for ONE YEAR!!! Btw: Great vid, thanks for that!
Looks like it's got a snap-on bezel, and the 'cutaway lip' is to aid the use of a penknife. This feature was quite common back in the day.
With a rubber 'O' ring this shouldn't compromise the water resistance at 50m.
Yeah but that's rather stupid. There is no need for big holes in the watch "for easy removal of the bezel". All other watch brands on Earth manage just fine without it. Why would you need a "snap-on" bezel? Ever. Ridiculous.
@@seybertooth9282 damn man you have no idea how common the practice is, for decades.
@@seybertooth9282 Actually, most of the watches in this form factor have it. But they are usually more subtle.
@@seybertooth9282
I'm not defending this arrangement, particularly with such an oversized 'lip'.
On the plus side, it makes putting in a replacement crystal super easy; a definite advantage in the days before sapphire.
And Timex customer service is unaware of this? And Ben is unaware of it, too?
My very first watch was a Timex. Got it not long after I learned to tell the time. I will always have a soft spot for them.
Dude same here! My first watch was a Timex and I guess that makes me always want another one from them, even though there are better options.
The profile reminds me of the Tissot sea star 2000 design, with those grooves cut into the side of the case.
The gap is there to help insert a tool-knife used to pray up to top ring of the bezel. It's intentional. This kind of thing is quite common. However if there are dents or scratches there you can assume that your watch has already been opened by a person without a real clue what he is doing.
Just seeing this watch right now. Thought about buying it! Thank you for the review!
It is a good watch, you just have to ensure you don't get a faulty one!
Orient used to have a 37.5mm handwound dress watch in their Orient Star range up until about 2016. It’s virtually impossible to find now.
£425? EEK! and Thanks for the warning about their customer service!
Timex's sweet spot seems to be the Waterbury line.. $50-$80 range.. below that you get some real junkie pieces. And above that the value seems to drop way off for what you pay. Their higher end stuff, the Marlin line for example.. 30mm water resistance, acrylic crystal, cheap straps, for $250... Insultingly poor value. Their Navi XL's are a real banger though.
This is a very unique design and I love everything about it. Blue for me.
I love this watch, particularly the green dial, but it doesn't seem to be on their website for some odd reason.
Great looking watch
7:46 I see many youtubers pulling out the price of the movement to make a cost assumption of the watch, but public prices are definitelty NOT the B2B prices. Especially for big ones like Timex.
Ben! Bambino comes out in 38mm in a few months. Perfect size, finally.
When i think about modern watch that's the only thing comes to my mind beside the creepy apple wrist phone, it's also very minimalist fits graphic designers as well, I usually see them wearing something like mvmt or DW, I can think of many different scenarios for this watch it's just an amazing modern watch they did it the right way, also thank you for this honest & detailed review.
Strap and case are incredible it’s just unfortunate about that hole in the case.
You need to review the new swatch speedmaster
i’m thinking those will be very difficult to get ahold of
@@MrMadvillan for the time being, they aren't limited editions.
@@mistermood4164 ha! I assumed they were and we’d see them for much more second hand.
@@MrMadvillan yep I'm totally getting one, i suggest you do aswell
Timex and customer service? LOL! Good luck, Ben. I’m surprised you didn’t get a roboresponse! Let us know how this conversation plays out.
Will do Donald, the only response I received ironically was them stating that they never received my responses 😂 need to sort their system out!
That hole on the side is there to get bezel and christal open. It was a usual functional design on a lot of 60s Grand and King Seiko watches. I dont mind it at all exept the scratches ot comes around it free of charge. But boy o boy what a great design of the case! It is totally alike AP code 11
Like the look of the Midtown 38mm with it's concave dial . Again it has an interesting case
Ben, I bought an American Documents watch from Timex and got the same radio silence. $500 watch and they couldn't even talk to me? I returned it to the authorized dealer who made it right for me, but I've sworn off Timex since. I'm unsurprised by your experience.
Please review the new galli s2
With that price I can get an Orient Kamasu and Bambino and still get change. Or an Orient Star.
I have bought my Seiko sarb033 for the same amount of money. Has a lot more quality. The price seems very high to me.
Wow what a lovely design 🤩
Nice, but check out the Traska Commuter in green which is amazing.
No Dude, that “gap” is to remove the Bezel in order to remove the crystal. It was super common during the golden era of mechanical in the 70s
Could you review the LCA reissue please
Hey Ben, in regards to the few you have on your watch...
It looks exactly like what happened to my Stowa Verus flieger watch. I bought one brand new as a birthday present to myself. All was fine until the day I dropped it in the bathroom and it landed face down on the bathroom tiles. It didn't survive the landing and I needed to send it to a watch repairer to replace the crack sapphire crystal. When I got it back I saw a noticeable gap between the bezel and the case. On many watches, this is the only way the watch repairer replace the glass.
Yours may be a factory return or a factory second that got past the QC inspection. Who knows?
I have the blue dial and it also has this 'crevice' although on mine it looks intentional and finished well, no rough edges. So this may be part of the design or due to manufacturing.
yeah could well be some sort of bezel access hole. Glad to hear yours isn't messed up like mine though! 👍
@@BensWatchClub Did they send you a refurbish/serviced watch by mistake??
Those cuff links are amazing
Based on what I've seen on CZcams, Timex is a brand we all love to hate. Not to say Seiko is any better lately for what they are doing, gouging customers. Instead of developing new premium models, they retired the "old" and re-issue as "new" with not much more than a higher price. They are too busy taking money than looking after customers. They have too many to spend time caring.
I feel like they completely discontinued the larger sized model. I’ve been wanting the 41mm blue but I haven’t seen it for sale.
did you manage to get your hands a the swatch x omega collabs?? Would love to hear your thoughts on it
It's looking like watch manufacturers are bringing mechanical watches back into fashion (if that's the right word) or perhaps it's because people are getting fed up with replacing batteries every couple of years or less. I'm a lady with an abnormally slim wrist wearing a mechanical/auto skeleton watch (it's a ladies one but the dial is 36mm) and, despite it being large, it really looks good on my wrist. I love it. My son bought it for me as an early Mother's Day present 😁
What are your thoughts on the Waterbury?
What’s the point of the ruby
For a defect, it's an awfully neat and symmetrical one. It almost looks like the notch in a snap-on case back. Very weird indeed.
you’re essentially right. the notch is to remove the bezel with a case knife, the the crystal. it’s designed to be there.
It’s not symmetrical.
@@RedWolfRedWolfRedWolf 3:31 yes it is. if anything it was installed off center. you usually install at the 6 or 12z
Is that an Eric Bristow dart at 3:03?
Nice looking design.

Its movement is seiko 4r35 or nh 35or miyota 9200 series
I really only collect and wear Patek and Lange but I still love your videos. Watches are watches, and a passion for these tools is something we all share, whatever the price bracket. Keep it going !
Doubt you own any of those watches homie
@@blakehamilton813 keep doubting brother. If it makes you feel better about yourself.

Probably the most beautiful timex i ever seen, case design are so unique minus the gap
Ive managed to cop the limited gold edition for 380£ . Is that a good deal ? I'm also wondering if there are only 500 pieces and it was released quite a while ago why is it still in stock ? p.s. havent recieved it yet just made the purchase ?
The "hole" is there to remove the bezel, my sarb017, Baltic mr01, Tudor date+day 94613 has it.
@@asbestosfibers1325 I'm sure because it's common for bezels to have that to remove the bezels from the case, he even in states it in the video. I'm so sure of it because I know about watches.
Why there is so less review for lorus brand?
I would like to have seen a lume shot for this
injected molded steel is a thing?
Ever had a look at the r2305nx9 Lorus Watch?...it looks very much like a casio and I would love to here your opinion on on it, if it is a worthy alternative
Ben, I appreciate your hard work you put into this video for us, but I only half paid attention.
Timex as a brand was great when I was 11 or 12. But now that I'm 53, I prefer better quality utilitarian/tool watches. Timex is not on my radar at all.
I've been looking at this watch since it came out did you find out if yours was a defect I can't imagine they all are like this.
Nice review great looking watch 👍
If I had a major QC issue, my first contact would be the retailer, even if gray market. I probably wouldn't expect great response from Casio or Seiko either.
Please review hmt Watches!
2:25 Sorry, not a fan of the BHT (Big Honking Timepiece) look. Waiting for dial sizes to go 38mm and below. Very much enjoyed Ben's video on "20 Excellent Field Watches for small wrists."
Sometimes there is a gap so you can insert a tool to remove the bezel!
The beautiful irony of a CZcamsr getting a watch with this level of QC issue.
I wish they had it in the original white dial. Also it's sold out again :(
The slice on the top ring at 12 is made to fit a watchmakers knive to remove the crystal assembly.... standard industry practice, they could of slimmed it down a bit though and not make it so apparent.
Someone at Timex is gonna get fired over this video.
The protracted resolution is the reason I won't risk buying a Timex. Too little, too late, Timex. I was sooo close to buying a Waterbury GMT. Such a shame.
What a great looking watch.
Lovely 😊 50 quid cheaper and I would buy one , cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
Sorry to disappoint you, but that case architecture and fabrication was created years ago, not by Gali (Timex), but by Invicta... For which they won a Red Dot award and introduced at Basel (Baselworld)
It’s a beautiful watch and want it in my collection but the qc issues and customer service really put me off.
I mean it's still quite a banger watch in my opinion (if you receive one without hole in the case)
Green dials are getting really popular now.
@♜Pínned_By Bën's wätçh CIub WOW DID I WIN???
Do you have relatively small wrists? I have good sized hands and big wrists so a small watch looks really weird on me.
Hi Ben can you please make review of obaku watches and strand by obaku (S722GDCBMC)
Call your credit card company and inform them you were delivered a damaged product and the merchant is not responding, they will cancel the transaction and Timex will definitely contact you then...
Thumbs up for more quality content like this!
yes its impossible to get an answer from the timex support.
Hey @Ben's Watch Club - do you know what happened to green Timex Gali? I was trying to find one for ages as I love the green version of it but cannot find one anywhere. Let me know if you happen to know anyone who owns one and is willing to sell :) Good video by the way!
Looks lovely but I just don't get why they added that ruby/crystal(?) to the face and looks particularly out-of-place against the green - this design choice alone would stop me considering this watch.
This watch is amazing to look at.... not sure it fits my style, but that case is crazy.
You just send it back with a letter at that point telling then they can exchange the watch for an undamaged one, or credit your account.
That's a beautiful watch. Pretty steep price though.
Maybe the bezel is interchangeable for a diver one (50 mts XD)
The watch is out of stock and I can’t find that color anywhere
Seems thing have gone downhill since me ol’ grandad retired as chief QC inspector for Timex! His ability to catch out suppliers for their cost-cutting shenanigans earned him the moniker “Le Salber Faux” (the silver fox)!
I didn't realize Timex makes automatics.
You are right if TIMEX wants to be higher end Customer service needs to be good.
Hi Ben! I have been a fan of yours for while now and very much liked your review of this watch. I liked it so much, that in fact I ordered it. I did so directly from Timex official website about 3 weeks ago, but haven't received anything, only some automated email about order being processed and a week later that the order has been shipped, the link for parcel tracking is still showing that the parcel has not yet been picked up by the carrier... They do not respond to my emails and I wasn't able to reach them with a phone. Could you please advice me how to proceed? This is my first purchase from Timex, so I do not know if I should just wait a little longer, or rather report this as a fraud to a police. What do you think? Thank you very much and take care!
Hey Petr, sorry I've only just seen this. Do you have an update?
@@BensWatchClub Thanks Ben! It took me few more emails, but few days ago I have received full refund. It is a shame, that I will not get the watch, cause I really like the look of it, but thanks to the customer service I doubt, that I will buy anything else from Timex soon.
