The tightness of the sari depends a lot on how roomy the petticoat is. If you wear a sari over leggings or shapewear petticoats, then you get the fishtail like figure. With a regular petticoat, one does not get the shapely look. But the regular petticoat is helpful if one needs to use the washroom or sit on the floor.
The slim look also depends on the weight and thickness of a sari. Crepe silks and other lightweight silks and georgette saris can give a tight fitting look. kanjeevarams are heavy and it is important to tuck them into a tight string that can bear the weight of the sari.
The tip about pulling the loose end from the other side needs some practice. :-)
