By the way, the bell doesn't just toll. It tolls *exactly seven times*, to represent Puss' seven prior deaths. Then it tolls one last, 8th time, when it falls on him, to hammer in the fact that he's now on his last life.

I couldn’t believe how brutal it was in an animation targeted kinda towards kids I also think it was perfect,
It did remind me of a lot of little kids (like 6-9 barely self aware) that I’ve known that hurt animals/how they behaved as a person (living in the woods kids are weird not a ton to do and some get a little creepy before they grow up to society standard, crawfish fights, throwing frogs, messing with birds or squirrels kids are messed up sometimes they never stayed my friend but they definitely are real people.)
The brutality and nonchalant attitude mixed with a ‘ya why not haha’ vibe that’s disturbing and throws you for a loop.
I would have thought jack was really childish/cruel due to his complete lack of sympathy. I think as a child I would have been confused why anyone laughed as I would have been shocked/scared for the dog.
As an adult that shit was such a curve ball and out of pocket that I couldn’t believe it and laughed so hard the cricket getting more and more annoyed and beginning to hate jack was fabulous, his own conscious doesn’t like/trust him and it’s his lack of consciousness that ends up destroying him

I forgot Mulaney was in the movie, and wondered where have I heard the voice before.
Took me until "I wish I could" (second to last line of the wishing process, if I misspelled it) where I realised I have *definitely* heard this double rise before. And then I remember "YOu sPEnt it already?!" from one of the skits, and it hits me. He did a smashing job.

@@someguy9052 No, that was definitely a "why". First, this is a return question, as in "what is the matter, why are you asking the question". Second, I trust the subtitles. And third, Mulaney is a professional in terms of verbal entertainment. He knows how to pronounce words so that they will be understood. There is no way his "watch" is very close to "why".

Also, when Kitty says she didn't show up to the wedding, she was clearly lying. She wanted Puss to stop feeling guilty over it after she overheard Puss talk to Perrito about it and how he confessed the reason why he didn't show (and she was the one to bring up Santa Coloma in detail to get Puss to open up about it). The reason why it's obvious is because of how angry she was at him over not showing up. If you didn't show up either, you wouldn't be that pissed off like she was.

She would obviously know that we wouldn’t show up and commit to a long term relationship because of his love for himself. Also, kitty’s face doesn’t show a hint of lying to make puss feel better, it’s 100% honesty. Even her tone shows that she’s admitting something. Not my realization, but the parrying dagger is a common “weapon” used on the off-hand beside a rapier for defensive purposes. Whereas before, Puss in Boots was all offense, relying on his skill, agility, and luck to dodge everything. When fighting Death at the end, Puss uses the Gatito blade to deflect the Wolf’s attack, deciding that even a tiny blade is worth it to protect himself, that merely his own skill, agility, and luck is not enough.

That is something I missed, but it enforces something I realized - I thought Perrito was intended to compliment the wolf, since Perrito appreciated and loved his life in spite of the hardships he had faced. Perrito is basically the manifested form of the life-appreciation message Death wanted to send Puss. If I remember, he does say hardships are a matter of perspective - so it makes sense that the one creature that had no wish chose not to struggle against the adversities in front of him.
Ultimately.... The wolf and Purrito compliment each other as opposites in the dog spectrum. Which is funny, because it's dogs teaching life lessons to cats.

      @pippastrelle Před rokem +13

I honestly think the three villains were brilliant. They made this film. By swapping between them, you could keep driving the story without any one of them becoming tired or losing threat.
I love the inclusion of *both* Goldilocks and Jack too because they foil Puss and each other. They represent how failing to appreciate what you have can hurt those around you both physically (Jack losing minions) and emotionally (Goldilocks breaking her family's hearts). Likewise, Puss learns to be less reckless but he also learns when to stay.

    • @BradenBest
      @BradenBest Před rokem +11

He's not one dimensional. He's just flat. The difference is subtle. One dimensional characters are poorly written like an oblivion NPC, with little to no defining character traits. They have one thing that defines them and it consumes their whole existence. Flat characters are characters that do not undergo development or change. They have the same personality and beliefs at the end as in the beginning. At first glance, Jack may seem one-dimensional since all he cares about is hoarding magic, but like Death (the other flat villain in this movie), he is a well-rounded character with more going on in his life than his psychopathic lust for control. Don't confuse character motivation for defining characteristics.

  • @DeadFishFactory

What I love about the wanted posters is that every main character gets introduced with one. Perrito's version is an unwanted poster looking for home, and Death's version is Puss's wanted poster as he points to the word "dead" (and this doubles in the deception to the audience that he is a bounty hunter).

Doggo is pure-hearted enough to not use the wish for evil, but suffered a lot during his early life without letting that affect how he treats others. Therefore he deserves it the most, and so he also gets the easiest path, regardless if he actually wants or needs the wish.
Meanwhile the others want the wish for selfish reasons and in all cases, don't need or deserve it in the first place. Jack was psychotic and greedy despite already having ludicrous wealth; Goldie was deceptive towards and ungrateful for who she already has; Kitty wanted the perks of a trustworthy partner without the vulnerability and heartache of earning it; and Puss was purely (and cowardly) serving his own ego.
All of them except Jack aren't bad people, but they fall into that trap a lot of people do; that dissatisfaction and regret with their life, the idea that "If I only had XYZ, then I'd finally be happy!" Or the idea that they squandered the fleeting time they have. Doggo has already seen worse, so comparatively his life is great now. The rest... are occupied with what-ifs, whether past or future.

That word, "comparatively". There is also another trap, that everything is actually fine, and any dissatisfaction isn't justified. Don't try to make your life better, instead make yourself think that you already have everything.
Horner was bad not because he had much and wanted more, but because he liked to hurt people. Goldilocks' way was ultimately self-defeating, the trouble was not in her wanting a family, but in ignoring the bears. Kitty, however, was desperate to have a normal life, and getting it through some magic is no worse than conventional way unless it is also self-defeating. The "heartache of earning" doesn't make trust any better, unless you meant squandering it without changing yourself (which the wish could do if you spell it right). And, finally, Puss who, despite all the selfishness and legend stuff, in the end just wanted to live. Dude, how living is bad? Even if we think that Jack doesn't deserve to live, Puss is veeeery far from this.

What you suggest would be akin to saying that a farmer wouldn't chase of a fox that ate some of his chickens because he leaned over from his rocking chair and saw that the fox was already in the middle of leaving. No, most people in such a situation would get off their rear and, at the very least, throw something at the fox- all of the farmers I've ever known from back when I grew up on a farm myself would have cussed and shot at it and left traps.
In this hypothetical the fox still gets away, but the farmer put up some amount of a chase. Okay, the fox gets away by darting off under a fallen tree and zips off into the wilderness- no real point in chasing it when you've completely lost track of it in such a vast area. Similarly, Death probably doesn't continue trying to chase down Puss because he hasn't come back to the metaphorical farm -or resumed his arrogant, reckless lifestyle that disrespects Death. The wolf only begins showing himself again when Puss shows an interest in the wish so he can get those lives back, the hypothetical chickens the fox loves to eat in this analogy.

What I love about Jack Horner (and the rest of the villains in this movie) is that he feels like a commentary on the overabundance of "redeemable", "relatable" or twist villains. Nobody is allowed to just "be evil" anymore. They either need to have a backstory to make them sympathetic, or needs to be human enough so that you don't completely hate them, or are trying to instill a message. Jack Horner laughs in the face of these concepts and are just unapologetically evil. He has no real reason for being so evil as he is. Yeah Pinocchio was more popular than him as a child, but as he himself said, he grew up in a *very* privileged situation, so Pinocchio didn't even ruin his life or anything by the merit of being magical. And people could go for the line of it's a very lazy villain, but that falls flat because it is easier to mess up this kind of villain, one that is goofy and just pure evil to become too much, but they keep his actions evil enough that he never feels like a bumbling fool and still a threat to be scared off.
And then you have the two other "villains" in this movie, Goldilocks and Death. The three of them together represent every type of "villain", Jack being the Irredeemable evil villain, Goldilocks being the sympathetic "villain" and Death being a force of nature, he's the villain in a sense of "what they stand for is an obstacle to the party, but it's just the way things are" type of villain, and I love all of them... A bunch of people in my theater actually started clapping when they showed Far Far Away and I'm the same as Bill, I have never been so excited for a Shrek movie lol. I loved this movie so much and I wish I could go to every single showing. It's so amazing. DreamWorks better make more of this kind of stuff.

Nice review! I loved all the beautiful little touches throughout the movie, like for example when Perro put his head on Puss's stomach, after Puss had calmed down he said "Thank you Perrito"...that was the first time he called him Perrito which is I think a more affectionate form of Perro (which is Spanish for 'dog').

Probably everyone notices when in the last part puss said that he can't defeat death, but he will fight for this live.
It really points out that when puss chose to fight, he knew he will die. But he still choose to fight than run away like previously.
It just shows how much character development he has on this journey, to face his fear even though it may cause his death.

I was surprised people didn’t know of jack horner
I feel like that was really common with ‘plumb on his thumb’
He steals a Christmas pie and eats it in a corner all for himself and eats all the fruit from the center all the while telling himself he’s a good boy.
It’s the expectation you can do what you want take from anyone especially on a holiday of giving/sharing and lie to everyone even yourself that you’re being good because you’re satisfied with your own self-serving actions. Even if it means there’s no pie for anyone else.
and the thought of taste testing with one finger from every single persons pie from every pie ever made, so much so that his fingers are stained to match. His thumb becomes a plumb (swollen and purple from him sucking on it/constantly dying it when dipping into a jam)
And all he eats is the the one taste-test of the pie, poke by poke till he’s over stuffed on filling alone that isn’t something he made.
Top tier adaptation of turning this childish boy into an adult with a lack of consciousness. I like that the wish everyone wanted was found it if they accepted it.
Purrito was satisfied and had no wish, kitty found trust, puss accepted the moment with honestly and care for others, Goldilocks family was what she wanted, and jack needed to accept that in reality he needs a conscious: he goes through the map with a conscious on his shoulder where before in the world he completely lacked one.
Deep down his wish is to be a good boy and to be happy given a pie on a holiday where people like him and want to willingly share it with him.
But to be a good boy and get that you can’t do what you want the people around you have to believe you’re also a good boy. You want love you can’t be abusive and stealing. If you want people to share you can’t be controlling and never give back.
Jack is given that option if haveing a conscious of being able to participate with people as a good person yet he constantly ignores him and claims he wants to be a terrible person so that he can have control, as he perceives and uses power for getting everything he wants and there being no alternative.
Jack needed to accept that his dream to control all magic would require getting a consciousness to realize how terrible his actions of stealing all magic would affect everyone else and him. And how he wouldn’t be a good person wouldn’t be liked and there wouldn’t be a world of magic as he destroys all of it for himself and no one else to the point that there’s no reason to create anything with it as no one but jack would ever know of it.
to be acceptable that his behavior has weight and depth he can’t be selfish and hurt others he has to treat people nice and they will be nice back.
Great foil to purrito who’s a constant optimist to match a constant pessimist

A personal experience about the Wolf. When we watched the film with some friends, one of them didn't fully believe the Wolf was Death for real. She thought he might have been just bluffing... Until he showed up crossing the magical wall of the star that destroyed anyone who touched it like it was nothing and created a wall of magical flames. She even mentioned that, "Wait! The power of the star didn't even faze him!? Holy sh*t he IS Death for real!" it was hilarious xD
Also, a thing about spanish is that we use "Diminutivos" (Diminutive words (?)). These are basically words to which we add the ending "ito/ita" to refer to them not only as something being small, but also very close or dear to us. So the "Gatito blade" would be something like "Little cat blade" refering again to size, but also as something that Puss treasures now. And in the case of "Perrito", that'd literally be "Little dog" but while at the beginning it was just to refer to his size, by the end he becomes someone dear and treasured by both Puss and Kitty.

Fun conspiracy theory: Pocket full of Poses= a nursery rhyme about the plague. River of relaxation= the river they tired to drown Perrito in, where he would have died if he's just relaxed and accepted it rather than fighting. Field of quick and easy Solutions =suicide reference. Perrito's map is also related to his trauma, it's just that he deals with his trauma a lot better than the other characters, so that’s why the landscape doesn’t suck when he's holding the map.

I also found it interesting how Perrito and Jack kind of mirror each other. All the other wish seekers have had their ups and downs in life and are various shades of anti-hero. But Jack is a true villain, born with so much that when it didn't fill that hole we all have inside us it twisted him and he became the hole. Represented by his bottomless sack of weapons. And Perrito who might be the true hero of the film who was born with nothing and so seeks to fill the holes in those around him with love.

Tbh didn’t realize that the sock was his sweater even after the story he hold.
I thought he was given that sweater at the cat house and kept it because it was something nice given to him
Haha nope it’s totally a sock and makes it more wild that it’s something he was thrown away in it’s like dobby all over again but so much worse and horrifying when mixed in with all his scars and wants for belly rubs
I also love how in the bakers dozen fight kitty attacks everyone she sees immidiately however puss in boots constantly avoids every single danger. When the explosions constantly hit him in the face when trying to avoid it he gets more and more panicked, putting him in more fear that he’s really going to be hit/killed with the final blow. I think it’s why the whistle being gentle but consistent parallels to the wolf blowing a house down/whistling at night.
