      As a child growing up in Essex, there was something really exciting about the "switch" from ITV to LWT on a Friday night. I never understood what it meant, but the feeling that behind the scenes, one team was handing over to another *to keep TV running over the weekend*, and all we saw was this stripey ident, was just....amazing.

    This rebranding to ITV was the beginning of the end. It always existed as an entity but this was it's first ever launch as a brand. Now looking back it's clear what the government wanted to happen and it did. A single company running it all. Sadly that company was Granada. I think Thames would have done a lot better. Just look at their programme making record. Granada have a good record as well but nowhere near as good as Thames record was.

    • @whatamalike
      @whatamalike Před 3 lety +10

      I dont agree that the 89 ITV rebrand was the beginning of the end. This was in fact produced as an act of defiance against the broadcasting act 1990 which resulted in the horrific 1991 ITV auction. Besides, outside of the logo itself, only 2 companies used it passed 1992; Yorkshire and Grampian. I understand why Grampian stuck with it cos they were tiny (and i'm surprised the likes of tyne tees and border dropped it too) but why yorkshire stuck with it for so long is beyond me! In fact, why they adopted it lock, stock and barrel is baffling considering only 2 years earlier they introduced by far their best ident in the form of Liquid Gold!

    • @chrisrowe8926
      @chrisrowe8926 Před 3 lety +2

      @@whatamalike LWT kept it until around 1998 as their ident. I say what I say about Granada but I correct myself. They no longer own the lot. Most of their directors and shareholders have long since left and their studios are now gone. Anglia are now apparently in charge of all the franchises of ITV plc. If it was a defiance of the auction then it backfired massively as the brand played right into the government's hands.

    • @whatamalike
      @whatamalike Před 3 lety +5

      @@chrisrowe8926 Well yeah, LWT (like everybody else in england and wales) continued to use the 89 ITV logo in their trailers, but the generic 89 ident itself was dropped sometime in mid-late 92.
      But nah I still think the 89 generic look was an act of defiance against the 1990 broadcasting act and in light of the 'Death on the rock' documentary.

    Quintessentially 80s in style, only the first 10 seconds of this theme was regularly used for station identification purposes. The ghastly vocal version featured in trailers promoting the 'Get Ready For ITV' relaunch.
    The 1989 generic logo was actually a rather elegant and stylish piece of graphic design. It gave the network a classy new unified look, except in the numerous regions that stuck two fingers up at it and did their own thing. The region that clung into the generic logo the longest by far was the northernmost, Grampian Television. It survived until 1998 by which time most of the regional franchises were owned by two conglomerates, namely Carlton and Granada.

    LOVED ALL THESE BUT SOME ITV REGIONS REFUSED TO ADOPT THIS LOGO & TUNE POSSIBLY BECAUSE IT WAS A LONDON CENTRIC VIDEO WITH BIG BEN IN IT AND ONLY A TINY TRIANGLE IN THE "V" of ITV, FOR THE REGIONAL IDENT, WHICH WAS BARELY VISIBLE ? E,G. IN THE MIDLANDS THEY WANTED A CENTRAL CENTRIC LOGO (HAHA) !!

    Can anyone tell me where one might find written lyrics to this version? Hard of hearing folks like me often have trouble discerning words in old recordings like this.

      @CSSTPMedia Před 10 měsíci

      @@rick182z Dude! You're taking it the wrong way. When I say 'the end of ITV' I meant that the start of 1993 was when the new franchises came into being and what ended ITV was the loss of on-air regional identities in favour of ITV generic branding in 2002, and the merger with Granada and Carlton came about which formed 'ITV plc' in 2004.
      With most of ITV's programming coming from the BBC TV Centre, W12 8QT their London Studios at the South Bank have left to rot since they left the studios in 2018.
      ITV wasn't the same as it used to be years ago. I can see that Sidney Bernstein and Lew Grade rolling to their graves to see what a complete mess ITV is these days.
