    This was a fun and new style of video for me! Analyzing Rebel Moon through a writers lens was a great exercise - I’m excited to do more deep dives into storytelling through a writers lens & keep the hate comments coming 😂 it’s great for engagement 💗🌞

    As someone who’s building on my own sci-fi world, I find Rebel Moon really insulting to any competent writer’s intelligence. Having watched the director’s cut, I can confirm it’s not much better. In fact, most of the scenes cut should’ve stayed, since they wouldn’t have hurt the PG-13 Rating. It almost feels like scenes were cut and rearranged out of order to make the film worse.

    Pacific Rim is pretty beloved by kaiju fans and i think it did fine critically as well. I loved TF 2007 but i did experience diminishing returns on the series. Bumble Bee was excellent though.
    Zach is a good adapter but imo terrible, terrible writer. Sucker punch is one of the most tonally bizarre movies ive ever watched. Id have turned it off if not for my Emily browning crush 😂that said i enjoyed 300, dawn of the dead(that had the great james gunn as the writer) and watchmen. I also think his objectivist / libertarian worldview lends to very inhuman feeling stories. Like super heroes not particularly interested in saving people. We'll see if he can hit a new low score with his Fountainhead adaptation.

    Rebel Moon came up on my recommendations and I'm pretty sure I put it on my list to watch because it has the word "moon" in the title (I'm a tad obsessed with the moon) but I never got around to seeing it.
    Solid points, Mik! While you were reading the summary, I thought, "cool concept" but the execution wasn't so cool. Loved the extra attention given to its pacing, stakes, character development, and worldbuilding.
    These topics aren't explored enough, in my opinion so the deep dive was well worth the price of admission. I was literally taking notes for my Gossip Girl anime project. This felt like a Masterclass, Cleveland Edition :)

      I really loved the visuals but yeah the story fell flat - it was super fun to explore why that was. Thank you for watching as always!! Love that the notes helped you on your own project - excited to do more deep dives with books 💘

    I love Pacific Rim, too. I think we might share a taste for good bad movies. Have you watched Godzilla Minus One? It’s the opposite of Rebel Moon in that EVERYONE is overflowing with wants and needs 😂

    I actually love stories that have potential that they fail to deliver on because they inspire my creative brain to fulfil that potential. Like you say, Mik, there were so many cool concepts that could have made a great story (or stories) in Rebel Moon, but the story, as told in the movie, just lacked too many of the essential things.
    Thank you for the deep dive!

    • @mikwrites
      @mikwrites  Před měsícem +1

      I do too haha which is why this deep dive was so fun to make for me! I loved the cool concepts it had, but it just lacked cohesiveness - it felt like a puzzle to solve of: why do I feel like it's off? Thank you for watching!!

      @@mikwrites totally! One thing I'm wondering about in the case of Rebel Moon is if it might have been better as a series rather than a movie. They could have fleshed out each 'pick-up' into a mini complete story, and also done a better job of the overarching conflict.

    • @mikwrites
      @mikwrites  Před měsícem +1

      @@fredaswan8858 100% this felt like it should’ve been a series gearing up for the main goal with each episode fleshing out the characters and having its own conflict

      @@mikwrites To be honest It had no potential. 😂😂 It was a hard knock off of Star Wars. Snyder has not made great movie since 300. I personally feel he should make more historical epic films. That might be his calling.

    Just curious, is the analysis taking into account the PG-13 cuts or the recently released director cuts? Wondering due to the timing and also some positive reviews emerging in favour of the extended Rebel Moon versions released this week on Netflix.
    A sequel to this video could be interesting to compare and contrast is there's any substantial differences in both versions' approaches to storytelling.

      I despised the PG 13 cut of Part 1. Currently I am watching the R version of Part 1 and it’s a lot better. Too many necessary scenes were cut out in the original release. The plot and motivations were quite nonsensical. I didn’t watch the PG 13 version of Part 2 because of it.
      Now I don’t think it should take 3+ hours make a decent film. I think for the Rebel Moon series Part 1 could have been a prequel and Part 2 the farmers war against the Empire. I imagine that could have cut the run time down while still telling the same story.

    • @a7000zo
      @a7000zo Před měsícem +1

      @@janellelives5158 Halfway through Part 1 and I already agree. The story runs a lot smoother, the worldbuilding is much less expository, the mystery surrounding certain characters is better set up, and the over the top extremity of it all makes everything feel much more atmospheric and unique, even if the overall premise is still as familiar as before.
      There's still some writing and pacing faults, but I'm already much more into this new universe.

    Talking about a movie with 160 million views being a flop while you have 86 is telling, but you actually need a brain to understand Zack Snyder's work so I get it.

    • @hekku9745
      @hekku9745 Před měsícem +3

      That’s rude, viewing a movie doesn’t necessarily mean that it was liked, at least that’s what the 22% on rotten tomatoes highlights. But I believe the director’s cut was better received because it brought a better understanding of the characters and the worldbuilding since its an hour longer than the movie

      Ugh, so true. Zack Snyder and characters like Rick Sanchez are soooo cerebral, just too advanced for the rest of us plebeians. 🥺 It takes the 10% larger man-brain to understand the true meaning of sci-fi. You, PlanetVeldt, with your 27 subscribers, and your average video views of 9, are far superior to us all. 🥹
