    In this episode I attempt to take some of the mystique out of sharpening your own hand saws. I don't completely understand all of the hesitation that a lot of folks have learning to sharpen their own saws. Really, it's no more difficult than learning to sharpen a plane iron or a chisel. All it takes is a small investment in some simple tools and a few minutes of practice. Hopefully, this episode will convince more folks to go ahead and try it. Oh, and don't worry about giving it a try on one of your high priced premium saws either. In fact, it's probably better to learn on one of these saws than on an old beater. Watch the episode to find out why.

    Hello,
    Just opened your video;
    I worked as a saw repair/ sales representative for over 5 years. This was in the early 1980’s. I’m retired now. My job as saw sharpening representative was in the cumberland plateau region of Tenn.
    Lots of hardwood lumber products construction
    Just wanted to comment as I have the experience of those people I was fortunate enough to meet.
    Proper knowledge, instruction, and practice make for properly sharpened, and set saws.
    Agreed, it’s not rocket science, but it does require focus on the work, stopping often to check the progress of the procedure; be it measuring, filing, putting set on the teeth.
    It really is an interesting hobby. I haven’t worked in the lumber industry since 1985, but I still hobby with a few Record planes, atkins, simonds, and disston saws.

    Atta boy Bob!!! No disappointment looking this one up too. I want to know because my Grandpa did and I'm a cheap bastard who hates throwing perfectly good tools away. So Thanks Again Amigo. Nothing like a sharp tool.

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. My recent Hand Saw Foundations course (it’s free) actually goes into even more detail on sharpening and tuning old saws. You can check out all the videos in the course here czcams.com/play/PLUmuU_NkBJCFa9H6c_go2lZ0VdrkSvKtD.html

    I just watched a couple of your video’s and want to complement you with your clear explanations. I see at 25.00 minutes your treadle lathe. Can you do a video about that please? How you construct it and how it performs.

      Aragorn De Dolor I no longer have or use that lathe. But you can find a lot of videos on that lathe. You can also find the plans for it in Roy Underhill’s book The Woodwright’s Guide.

    Many thanks for this video: very clear and exhaustive. I have some doubt here being still a beginner: my saw set pliers push the teeth too much: how could put the right amount of set at first try?

    • @BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking
      @BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking  Před 3 lety +1

      Hard to say. Every saw setting plier is different. Some allow you to adjust the amount of set and some don’t. So it depends on what kind of set you have.

      @@BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking Have you ever heard of or tried relieving set in a vise with a piece of paper? I forget where I saw it but it looked really simple for dealing with over set teeth

    • @BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking
      @BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking  Před 3 lety

      Yes, it can work for thinner blades like joinery saws. It’s not as effective for larger crosscut and rip saws as it can remove too much set.

    Which brand of saw set tool do you use?

    • @BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking
      @BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking  Před 4 lety

      Jonathan Sholar My favorite saw set is unbranded but it is a copy of a Stanley 42W. I’m not sure the one I used in this video was that one. The one in this video may have been an old Disston Triumph, which I no longer own.

  • @thewalnutwoodworker6136

    How easy it is to sharpen a saw depends on the person who sharpened it last

  • @andreicharpentierquesada4530

    Hello. How often you sharp your saws?

    • @BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking
      @BobRozaieskiFineWoodworking  Před 4 lety +1

      Andrei Charpentier Quesada Depends on how much use they’re getting. On average I’d say maybe 2-3 times per year.
