England's criminal justice system had the death penalty by hanging (the gallows). The last execution was on 13 August 1964. This song is about a prisoner waiting to be hanged and contemplating his life, knowing his death is coming. The five final stages of grief run through this man: Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

here's the thing bro - you mentioned that the instruments tell the story and take you on a ride even without the lyrics.
Metal music is alot like classical music - it moves you in similar ways. The instruments in metal are giving an enhancement to the mood/feelings the lyrics are trying to convey. Think of it like a movie's musical score. The music in a movie scene makes you feel the actions and words of the actors much more than without the music - whether it's the haunting score that puts you on the edge in a horror movie, or John Williams bombastic energy during an action sequence, or the heartwrenching somber music accompanying the death of an important character.
Metal songs are conveying a story, and the music accompanies it to make you feel the emotions even stronger.

Iron maiden is one of those bands that you can close your eyes and be taken along for a journey. Thanks for the Vid 😊
Edit: Iron Maiden is my favorite band in from my youth, I'm 52. Exactly what you said after the song was over is exactly what caught me in 1983 when I first heard Iron Maiden. The Number of the Beast was the first song I heard, not this one, but same album. If you liked the instrumentation of that song then you should check out some Dream Theater. They have all the story telling (and equivalent vocal talent) of Iron Maiden combined with absolutely perfect instrumentation. You want layers, Dream Theater is a chocolate layer cake....I love Iron Maiden and always will, but Dream Theater is phenomenal.

Cool that you have joined us here in the realm of Iron Maiden 🙂 As you may or may not have discovered already, they are one of the most legendary and influential bands of all in that wonderful genre known as HEAVY METAL. They were founded in London by genius bass player and genius songwriter Steve Harris, who remains their undisputed leader to this day. He is the engineer of their unmistakable sound, with his own lightning fast, "galloping" bass lines underline the combined melodies of two lead guitars. And to top it all off, we have the soaring, dramatic vocals of Bruce DIckinson (who coincidentally joined the band on this their third album), not settling for just singing but telling a story, with all the intensity he can bring. As you observed, the lyrics also play an important part: every song covers a given topic, very often a historical event but sometimes a certain book or movie, and occasionally even an important topic in the present. Never a superficial love or party song - not that there's anything wrng with that, but that's not Iron Maiden's style. I could go more into detail, but this has been long enough already. I hope you enjoy your future explorations of their music, and maybe even get inspired to look into the bands that came before them like Judas Priest,Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple, and the bands that Iron Maiden inspired in their turn like Metallica, Megadeth and Queensrÿche.

I also have my own Story of discovering hallowed be thy name, and the whole band Iron Maiden.
In the past 30 years i was far away from Rock or heavy Metal music, i never could Imagine to like just one song of this type of music. Here in Germany i was just a fan of techno (electronic music in general) and Hip Hop.
Your reaction of this song is the same like mine a few month ago. It was amazing, it was very intense and emotional, and there was something in theyr music that i never felt before. There is a german word called "Ergriffenheit" it means something like getting grabbed and holding you tight, something powerful that let your tears running.
It is a very different style of music, and Iron Maiden is something very special. They are able to awake energies and emotions inside you that you never knew before by listening to music.
I'm a big Fan now and i listened to all theyr 17 albums, to each and every song. And still today i discover songs that are breathtaking, and so often my tears are running of that intensity.
Songs you really have to react on are:

The greater good of god (watch hurm1t emotional reaction in CZcams)

Great reaction, man.👍If you want rock music with great lyricism you really need to hear TOOL. Their singer and lyricist Maynard is one of the all time greats. For proof check out The Pot.đŸ»

Hey Cliff great reaction! You are going to see how the metal world and hip hop really sit well together. I'm 50 and a lifelong metalhead but from the dawn of rap I was very into it's power and lyricism. But I have to say, for CERTAIN, that the lyrics of rock and metal have depth and levels that most, not all, rappers can't touch. Would love to see you react to a Moody Blues song, A Whiter Shade of Pale. THAT will test your lyrical analysis and it's a stone cold classic. Not a heavy song at all but a truly stunning one.

Great reaction, and fantastic song. I am not much for the rock/metal music, but appreciate art at its finest (Iron Maiden is definitely in this group). Have a great day Cliff and everyone else!
PS. Thanks for this one Francois!

I learned guitar by playing Iron Maiden and Metallica. Iron Maiden taught me how to gallop, harmonize, and play in precision with other players. 👍

This is my all time fav with Maiden, just chills from the enire story and the way u are taking u on a journey
This song actually is one of few that truly reminds me of the old time metal that I fell in love with in my teens, even though most of this style of metal came before I was even born, such incredible skills and musical talent
Iron Maiden has some very good songs
Though I started thinking about Metallica when seeing ur reaction, u should react to a trilogy of songs called "The unforgiven" 1 & 2 and 3, they tell the story of James Hetfield(the singer in Metallica) and his view on himself, the world and how he saw things in different parts of his life..

Steve Harris the bass player writes most of the music and lyrics. It's said that he watches movies reads books and writes the soundtrack in his head then pens lyrics.
