New York Central's Jet-Powered High Speed Train

- In the 1960s, rail passenger travel was on a steep decline in the United States. Cars and airplanes were taking over, but the New York Central Railroad had a plan. The railroad's president, Alfred E. Perlman, figured speed would re-attract riders, a speed of 200 mph (322 km/h) to be exact. He tasked research team lead Don Wetzel with the job of researching and developing a high speed train to test potential high speed routes. The catch was, Wetzel had only 30 days to make it happen, so things would be done on the cheap. The New York Central's Jet Train was thus born out of an RDC car.

Imagine just driving alongside the tracks and then getting your eardrums completely blown up by the jet train
Not to mention your car being ruined from all the debris thrown from the train
Also three words: grade crossing accident
Oh yea not to mention your car would go flying if your car is next to the tracks
only in ohio 💀
I was there and the only thing being thrown by the jet engines was dust!
Perlman may not have so friendly with preserving steam locomotives, but boy was he one heck of an innovator and experimenter with New York Central, briefly for Penn Central, and later Western Pacific. Absolute legend in modern Railroad history
I WANT THAT STEAM LOCOMOTIVE!!!!!!!!
history of the dark
At the Amherst railroad hobby show, I just got an n scale CSX executive car saying Alfred Perlman.
Oh no
Y’all talk about how he did the Central, none of y’all talk about how he did the Grande
As a means of propulsion for rail vehicles, jet engines are totally impractical (guaranteed to be very inefficient), but as a rush-order cheapo testbed for determining whether the rail running gear could handle the speeds, this unit made sense.
4:49 "Experimental" railroad snowblower... which actually proved to be the one thing that DID survive as a concept today!
''-what do you want boss?''
''-we need speed''
''-how do we-''
''-shut up get a random train and glue jet engines onto it''
Its sad the Jet Train never got to see preservation. Cool vid man
Yeah, that thing should absolutely have been left for a museum making US rail history like that. oh well.
Jet engines on trains never took off, but similar turboshaft engines were used for decades on the Amtrak Turboliners. Instead of using jet propulsion, the turboshaft uses a jet engine to turn a shaft that spins the wheels.
This is how the Abrams tank works too.
That man was given the opportunity to turn a railcar into a jet dragster and he did it. Brilliant.
Imagine rail fanning one day and a train flies past you and knocks you off your feet and you end up a mile away from where you were standing before.

I came here from that video!
Even though some of your videos happen to cover somewhat well known topics in railroading history, you always manage to include something lesser known about the subject, ranging from technical details to photos, in this case being the project being undertaken in 30 days, and interior photos of the testing devices, respectively.
My dad was a Budd Red Lion guy involved in the RDC project. Needless to say he was not happy with this idea. Deemed it "reckless". I think it was cool! hahaha Thanks for the video!
Incredible history on the jet train! I thought the only flaw on it was it being too tall for the loading gauge due to it's mounted jets, guess there were more flaws than I thought.
Ah yes, Thomas and the Jet Engine in Real Life.
Lol
I feel like Thomas would’ve exploded sense of how fast he was going and the amount of water getting wasted tbh the E2s had small water tanks
The fact that the NYC Jet-Powered train was built out of a Budd RDC is surprising to me.
Literally redneck engineering.
You know the railroad is a bit drunk when the have a whole research team
Alfred E Perlman: I WANT THAT STEAM ENGINE!! From history and the dark
History IN the Dark
Stupid lies perpetuated by fools -
There's a similar story in auto racing, too. Around the same time there was an experimental racecar powered by a turboprop airplane engine that raced in the 1967 Indy 500, and it almost won before a transmission failure ended its race. Interesting how much cross-pollination there was between land-based and air-based transportation back then.
Cool video.
Some years ago, Kato USA offered this jet RDC as a custom build for customers in N scale. I think they were around $200 if I recall correctly. Had they offered it in HO, I definitely would have picked one up. Kind of wished I had gotten the N scale just for the coolness of it, even though in real life it didn’t amount to anything.
I recall the Soviets doing it as well and appreciate you showing their version.
Thanks for this video!

Corrected. Thanks for catching that!

This is one of my favorite bits of recent railroad history bc the testing happened on the Chicago Line which I railfan regularly and live near
Also the brakes weren't sufficient to brake 188 to 0 too much heat. so had to coast 188 to 80 then brake to a stop.
Wonder if they couldve developed reverse thrust for this thing had it actually been practical to pursue.
I mean if I got to drive a train, especially one going that fast, I'd honk the horn pretty much the whole time too
4 days to the 56th anniversary, that still hasn't been beaten
Pretty Sad For Don Wetzel's Passing He Will Still Be Remembered For Creating The FASTEST!!!! RDC Jet Engine Like Sonic And Thomas From Thomas And The Jet Train RIP Mr Wetzel For Making This Speed And Power 1931-2019
Respect for the camera man.
Nick Ozorak actually did an interview with Don Wetzel, it was a great insight into this creative attempt.
The engines and nacelles were obtained from a scrapped B-36.
Thank you so much Jared!
What a treat. Been watching your videos most of the weekend. Nice to have a new on on top of the rest.
Good ol' Black Beetle or M-497 in the 1960s
I'm gonna bet that Wetzel had recently watched The Great Race and was impressed with Professor Fate's speed record rocket sled.
Thanks! That was a way cool video. The storytelling was well done and held my attention. Nice to know the tracks hold up. Maybe not the ballast, lol.
Excellent storytelling, thank you for sharing!
And we think crazy ideas are only in this century... I rode this rdc when it returned to hudson line service, but it would have been cool if the jets were still attached. Jetpack away! :-) 😀 Great work as always my friend.
The top mounted jet pod looked like it was taken off the wing of a B-36 Peacemaker, almost the same looking jet pods used on the B-47 Stratojet
Nick Ozorak did a fantastic interview with Don Wetzel a few years back on his podcast. It’s a great listen.
Great video with excellent research!
I was six years old and live a block down from the tracks, still vividly remember both runs, the sight of this flashing across the crossing!
I met Donald several years ago at a PowerPoint presentation!
At a Power Point presentation Don Witzel said he then wished he would have backed out to see how fast it would go. He never throttled the jets full throttle.
I was at the three mile bridge near Stark’s race track right by the Route 576 bridge over the tracks. I also saw Don Wetzel’s power point presentation in Stryker when they dedicated the speed record plaque at the depot. I was able to get Don to autograph a photo of him standing in front of the M-497!
@@davidrupp9089 Stryker OH is were I saw him also. May have seen you there.
I’m sure we crossed path’s that day. I really enjoyed Don’s presentation! I was able to tell him where l was that day when he went screaming by in M-497. I remember there were sheriff’s deputies posted at the 576 bridge to prevent anyone from crossing over it. I was 12 yrs old at the time, and my grandparents lived about a quarter mile from the bridge. My grandmother let me take some binoculars to watch for the M-497. When she appeared in the distance, l started to peer through the binoculars at M-497, but she was coming towards me so fast l had to lower the binoculars because l was afraid l would miss it as it passed by, lol!
@@davidrupp9089 we stood in the front yard and watched it from a block away in Edgerton.
Very informative video!
I’ll take the old clikkity-clack of those steel wheels on the tracks and far off train whistle. I want the whine of a jet engine - I’ll go to the airport observation lot. Still, I would have liked to see one on the tracks in motion. Man, it sure stirred up the dust. Can you imagine? Too bad at least one did not survive in a museum someplace. Now that would be cool.
Bro ofc this thing was made in Ohio bruh 😭😭💀💀
Ohio is not Even what you think it is actually it is not how you see it in the stupid memes
How could something like this be kept quiet. Good stuff
Great video.
The concept of a rocket jet train still makes me giggle
Nothing to do with trains, but I used to visit Bryan, OH regularly because I had relatives who lived there.
Great Train information
I know about this experiment through an unlikely source, Chris Sawyer's Locomotion. I was added through modding as a joke item (as it would be impractical use in revenue service). But none the less, it's a neat item that I am glad to have more information on now.
Crazy cool New York central locomotive
Should of been a engines of New York central episode
Amazing first attempt at a high speed train
Video idea: the original Auto train 🚆🚘
Talk about Marvellous Machinery
I would imagine this thing should go airborne at some point
Those tracks that run through Bryan Ohio were not ribbon rail either at the time. I would imagine that doing the same test now would be faster. Those tracks are some of the best maintained tracks around...
Lets go more NYC
Shame M-497 wasn’t saved for a Museum…..
Yeah and was scrapped in the most horrifying way possible....
bro made action chugger
only if it was preserved
Well at least the Soviet Jet train was saved (speaking of its front part).
The Black Beetle could easily topped 200 mph had it not been driven by Wetzel. Being burdened with the weight of his gigantic, cast iron balls slowed it down considerably.
0:19 bro almost got rear ended
Piloting a train. Sounds odd as a pilot in a loco in NSW just monitors the engineer
Imagine if that GP9 was towed behind instead the poor diesel would be torn apart down to the frame and engines
No, it followed behind only to pull the M-497 back to the start of the section of track.
Holy crap I had no idea this was real!
Don is the dude ❤
The Turbo still holds the Canadian speed record from 1967.
The Sikorsky turbo train?
The 50's&60's were just "hold my beer!"Moments every day. 🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🚃🚃🙋
That was just the 20th century in general tbh.
5:40 LMAO the Dragonball Z clip was perfect! 😂😂
This seems quite safe, seems like a great way to destroy your ears
3:35 i like him
Why, so long 😪, making us wait for your excellent content?
"Well, Ima leeeeeeeavin'
Ooooon a jet train!" XD
180mph on jointed track!!!
I wish someone made a model of this
There is a Trainz model on PWiesers site
*thomas and the jet engine intensifies*
I need a t shirt of that line drawing
Technically a “diesel” locomotive is actually an electric, with diesel generation.
Don Wetzel gave frequent talks about the jet train until late in his life.
Road to the future
They need to electrify the main passenger routes.
soviets were taking notes
Too bad this rare engine was never preserved, and it's also too bad neither Amtrak nor the other passenger services in America have considered doing this. Someone ought to create a group to build a new one from the ground up.
The fastest train in the western hemisphere … is now a snow blower essentially.
Engines at the back of the car would have looked much nicer!
Lionel model featured in I love toy trains all aboard
Fun fact that inspired that Thomas the Tank Engine jet engine episode I'm just saying it might be true
Huge missed oppurtunity to play free bird
Is it just me or does anyone else feel like metroliner really dropped the ball on finding reliable high speed rail travel?
Cool
Also it wouldn't be hard to build a replica of this inch and either you just need to build replica jet engines and rebuild the streamlining one another are DC and you'll have a modern replicas of the thing
HEAR ME OUT... "mainline before and after" revival
The train nose was almost flat. A lot of wind Force push agents the train nose. That creates a lot of drag. The train nose should have been more aerodynamic.
Why did I not get a notification about this?
Welp, foamers wouldn’t last too long trying to get close up shots of these
I can only imagine the conversation in the R&D department that ended with “fuck it let’s strap a jet engine to the roof” and they all agreed. Great vid dude!
JET TRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN
Cartoons everywhere?! 🙃
Wow
Imagine an entire fleeh of jeh-powered trains on a single rounh. What are you? Brihish?
Always interesting what unimportant role railroads play in the US. A record of 320 km/h (or in useless units 200 mph) that is still valid today. A speed that is the every-day commuting speed in further devoloped countries like France, Spain or Germany. Well, the US have one of the highest per capita CO2 emission worldwide. Maybe they should think about trains once again.
is that a Pratt and Whitney B-52 (or B-36) engine?!
yeah that ain’t happening again
