- Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the largest cultural icons in the United States. Being the face and spearhead of the 1960's Civil Rights movement he is remembered for his racial egalitarianism in the face of Jim Crow and other forms of institutional racism. He is a figure celebrated by nearly every politician, every mainstream political ideology, and is remembered as a character to unity. Yet, many who have extensively read and studied MLK know that this 'character of unity' is a facade of sorts, they know that the American collective memory of MLK is false. These falsities can be explained through an introduction into Baudrillard's Hyperreality, and Jameson's postmodern capitalism.

I felt this video was a perfect example of how a multitude of different branches of theory can be manifested into one notable historical example. Another fascinating aspect is how you intertwined the modern political fabric with the notions of hyperreality, a concept which in and of itself is vague and philosophically diverse. Overall, the fact that you convey theory so coherently and potently whilst simultaneously using a perfect aesthetic, is why I found your channel so emancipating and unique. @@dan26dlp i have! The ones I've went to have been very civil & have had 100% mask compliance. There were some folks there who were saying some more radical things that caught my attention though, and the crowd agreed. It gives me hope.

I was just thinking about your ideas today, while contemplating the Buddhist community, my area of society. For some reason, people remember MLK and the Buddha as icons of passive domestication, though they had impacts in narrow cultural areas. when we look at both of their actual words, however, they had lots of far-reaching things to say about money, class, and how our lives work in real day-to-day senses. and we are having the same problem in Buddhist meditation groups: the Buddha had very radical things to say about money and killing/eating animals for example, and we are undergoing a painful phase revisiting the real original words. MLK and Buddha were much more demanding than we remember. Just carrying a sign while telling a slogan, or just sitting on a meditation cushion, isn’t what Buddha and MLK were talking about. Radical change was about everything we do from waking to sleep.
Although controversial, I would say that many people tend to look at Jesus Christ in a similar manner. They take out all of the radical ideas of Jesus, that a wealthy man would find it difficult to enter heaven, the way he hated the consumerism that was taking place in the temple, and the radical ideas of equality. That is, that any man is the same under God. However, once Christianity became institutionalized and power started becoming concentrated in political positions such as the Vatican and the existing Roman empire, we start to see Christianity twisted into an ideology of control. We see it come back briefly and in small sects with Liberation Theology in the last century with El Salvadorean Jesuits and Oscar Romero and other places in Latin America, but for the most part, these theologies have been denounced and ostracized by institutions.
@@Notemaster64 yes I’ve vaguely heard similar things about Christianity, thank you providing more precise detail confirming my vague suspicion that Jesus was radically anti-consumerist. I used to volunteer with an anarchist soup kitchen that claimed to have Christian roots, called the Catholic Worker kitchen aka ‘Downtown LA Hippie Kitchen’. I admired their dedication but i was too outside of Christianity to know about their claim that Jesus was radical etc. Looks like dharma and Christ are similar in heart, as the Zen Monk Thich Nhat-Hahn said. I didn’t listen but maybe it’s true. Cheers 🙏🏽
It's the same with Gandhi here too. We are indoctrinated all things about Gandhi in schools like his non-violence, compassion etc etc. But students are never encouraged to get a deeper knowledge of the economic and political views of Gandhi. Only much later did I realise that Gandhi was anarchist and was against industrial capitalism.

MLK's revising overlaps nicely with the Situationists' and Lefebvre's concept of recuperation, wherein capitalism appropriates and degenerates a radical critique into passivity which can coexist with the logic of capitalism

I don't get it. All that philosophy stuff is really esoteric to my ears. I had no idea what you were getting at. It might have helped to give an example and show the stages of that simulacra thing you were talking about. Sometimes showing how somethings works is more effective than explaining it. At least, that often works for me. I've had people go practically blue in the face trying to explain how something works without success; meanwhile, something complicated that is demonstrated gets right to me almost immediately. Just a thought.
Also, who says the Civil Rights Movement was nonviolent? I don't know how anyone could think that. There was tones of violence! The movement depended on that fact, knowing it would be televised and thus give lie to a lot of what was being said in addition to outraging the nation with images of women and children being sprayed with hoses or having dogs sicked up on them. What about all those organizers that were killed in South? The general violence of Jim Crow? I came decades after the movement and even I know about this stuff. The 1960s was a violent time, as were the 1970s. Where are people getting their ideas these days? I don't get this world.

Respectfully, I'm not sure you escape your own critique here: By reducing Dr. King's legacy to a single-in this case, Marxist atheist-dimension, you are conveniently overlooking the fact that his philosophy and praxis remained firmly rooted in his vocation as a Southern Baptist Christian minister to the bitter end.

Very good. Even at the most basic level Trump is not real. We all know he colours his entire head orange each day, that this is not really him. Yet the charade continues. Even at this most basic level, he is not genuine.
woke is the opposite of MLK's dream. People are judged now by their identity, not the content of their character. MLK was also a Christian, so I don't think he would agree with much of this stuff that is going on today.
