It was later on..in the year of 2014-15 I guess..when he was mentally as well as physically exhausted. He was not able to showcase his true talent when he was in the band and was not given much to sing except a few lines and high notes. He wasn't able to contribute much to the songs because the management thought that the lines and songs he wrote were too mature and serious for the band.They had 5 albums in 5 years and 4 brilliant world tours without a break. They were showcased as someone they were not.They had to drink and take other substances (not sure if they used drugs but yea) in order to be stable and deal with the stress..everyone was pissed bcz of management..that's why the boys took a break when they realized what was happening to them. Zayn also decided to leave and also had terrible anxiety and eating disorders.. You all might have noticed how they all have different styles(pun intended) after they went solo. Imagine if they had the chance to create what they loved, the whole universe would have blown up!

It was cause of the management, at least a part of it. He said somewhere that he is in general a happy-go-lucky guy and they wanted to portray him as dark and mysterious, also he was not allowed to dye his hair, though he rebelled and did that anyway.
Exactly I understand he left for his mental health but how he handled it afterwards made me so upset
