Electrical Diagnostic Video for Kwikee Step
vimeo.com/45602427
Great video. Back in 2004 I had to replace the motor on our Kwikee steps mounted on an older Fleetwood Pace Arrow. A “Kwikee” replacement motor was ridiculously expensive. After much internet research I learned that some electric step parts were identical to those of an electric truck window. For example, Siemens “window lift motor”, part number WL43003, was an exact match to the motor on our steps. At a much lower price; not only that, AutoZone had the motor in stock.
Wish I would have found this video a couple weeks ago. Most through and comprehensive I have seen yet.
Very good video wish I would have found it earlier before I started on mind it had been bent by previous owner pretty bad I got alot of time in it but it's ready to install it's on a older unit 1990 pace arrow and my motor had both metal gears lucked out thanks again great video
Thanks for the informative video. This has been the most thorough video of how it works mechanically from A to Z. I have come across. Thank you for making the time to create this Video.
Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.
Excellent Video! For your viewers: One feature you touched on was current limiting when the mechanism reaches full stroke in or out, I found out by testing the motor and gearbox while it was unbolted from the step is that the control board runs the motor either direction on a timer for approximately 6-8 seconds or until given a command to run the opposite direction. The problem I'm having is the step will work fine for a while then the next day it stops working; I'll take the motor off the assembly plug it back in and it starts working again. I have found when removing the motor, it is under a significant mechanical load even though it is unplugged. (I think this is normal). I am going to heed your advice and remove the tread covers and inspect the ladder stop to see if that fixes the problem. Thanks.
Best tech video I have seen. Scrupulous detail, installation cautions, likely causes, purchasing options, suggested actions for manufacturers to improve customer satisfaction. Brilliant! How do I send $ as a thank you?
Never thought of getting paid for these... maybe I should setup a Venmo. Thanks for the appreciation! Like and Subscribe is how I get paid.
Excellent tutorial and a big help. Just got ours working. (Single step straight arm). Many thanks.
Excellent. Thanks very much.
Very informative video thank you
Excellent video
Wonderful video! Thank you so much!
Great video. Thank you. Will see what parts are available now!
Great video. Very informative. I wish that is my problem. I think mine has something to do with the magnet and wires.
Really well done and great detail. Thank you so much!
Appreciate the feedback... thanks
I'm having the same exact problem with my steps(the grinding sound). Time to by new parts-I appreciate u going thru the steps on how to remove and replace warn parts
very well explained video. clear and concise.
Good safety discussion - ty
Very best video I’ve seen awesome job mine was jammed wouldn’t come out motor was jammed 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks, glad it helped!
Good Job. Love it
Appreciate the feedback.. thanks
Excellent...........
Excellent Video. It's a shame having to throw out a perfectly good motor because of a stripped $1 plastic part. Emails sent
Excellent job. Thanks.
Love the in-depth video. Mine was very bound up in the open position. Hard difficult time removing pin. Now I can not get. It back in. I will try and remove the entire box re pin it then bolt back in. The strange thing it is doing is you open the door and it takes about 10 seconds then opens. When you close door 10 seconds and it retracts. Then motor will continue to click and hum intermittently until power is turned off or battery disconnected. Any Ideas. Also there is a wire hanging that looks like a tiny alarm pad that you seen on security system. Not sure where it might belong.
Great video well done. How did you hold those four corner loose bolts in place while you put the gear box back on? Thanks
Ebay as of 06/05/2021 ebay has the same part grom china for approx. Forty dollars. Shipping takes a month or so. If you donot need your part right now the price is as cheap as one will get from what was available online.
No need to disconnect batteries or turn of Master Switch. Just unplug the motor for the step. 30 seconds.
Great video! Ever run into a situation where the steps run normally, but extends when the engine is turned on and retract when the engine is turned off?
Mine did that a few times while I was working on them. I think it straightened out after taking the motor out and re-installing.
thanks for the video - very straight forward. what motor option do i use for the motor assembly on the AMequipment site (214-1001,1003,2001,or 2003)?
didn't know they even made a replacement gear....
In trouble shooting the steps, is there a way to test the control board, or is it a process of elliminating the motor and gearbox as the problem source so all that's left is the control board?
I found this gear on Ebay type in RV step motor strip gear repair. You will find the seller. Shipped to me from Texas $ 27.50 free shipping. What size and how thick are the washers under the gear and also the washer on the shaft that retains the plastic gear.
This is great! Thanks for sharing. I will add link in description so all can benefit.
Maybe that plastic gear could be 3 D printed
Or have manufacturers come up with just that part for sale yet
Been looking but they are still selling complete assembly
Keith
Would a 3d printer duplicate the gear?
Or JB Weld and a file!?
Question. New at RVing. From where the stairs get its power, from the start batteries or the couch batteries?
Again, new at RVing.
Thanks.
My stairs activate with my Main switch which tells me it’s from the engine battery.
Great video...Got a new motor assembly from Amazon, installed it, works perfectly, but backwards! When I shut my door, the stairs came out, when opened door, stairs went it! replaced the old, gear stripped motor assembly and worked correctly, but grinded once again obviously...it was just a test. Could the motor that was sent to me wired in reverse?
I would flip the wires and test.
@@swalesutube thanks for reply, but figure either the motor is wired backwards, cause the old motor direction is correct.
Agreed, should be easy fix.
So....where would I start looking for the fuse.
Look in the Battery Control Center. Not sure which model of RV you have, but my Bounder has it located in the first compartment. It is a square black box that houses transfer relays, fuses, and circuit board from RV Custom Products. Their website has documentation on many models. rvcustomproducts.com/f73-1020
What would make my step work backwards when I close the door it comes out
Try turning the plugs around is called reverse polarity
@@davidwilson6377 yes I took the motor back apart turned it 180 and it worked fine thank you for the reply
My steps sound like a machine Gun when they go up! Is this a gear problem?
Yes it is most likely the gear shown in the video.
swalesutube Thanks! That was the problem. The gear wheel was metal. Wore down on one side really bad! Rotated the wheel to other side & good to go! Thanks for saving us $$$$$$$$$
what is that loud smashing noise at the end of going forward..... something is wrong...
Amequipment has it jacked all the way up to 110 dollars now 🤦🏼♂️
Must have see my video... that too bad... but if you read the Video Description there is a link to buying JUST the bad gear... better savings.
You can get them on Amazon also.
