    As a registered veterinary technician who handles feral domestic dogs and wildlife, I appreciate you learning how to use a tranq gun. A lot of people don’t understand how using IM sedation via tranq gun is keeping so many people from being hurt, and the wolves as well. Some injectables can sting a bit and even if the wolves let them near, giving that injection without solid restraint, muzzles, etc. could result in a serious injury and ultimately an animal being euthanized due to being deemed dangerous.
    You all at Alveus know what you’re doing for these animals. You have a veterinarian backing you up. Mad respect for learning these skills so you can ensure your animals will always be cared for.

  • @charlsreyn
    @charlsreyn Před 2 měsíci +217

    It seems a decent number of people think they are learning this in case the wolves escape, which is false. Sure, it would be useful in that scenario, but they are doing this primarily so they can sedate the wolves for vet visits. Maya's apprehension and saying that "I will practice but I'm never doing that to an animal" is saying that in this typical case of why they would be using the tranquilizer gun, she does not intend to be the one using it. There are plenty of staff at Alveus who can do it instead.
    Connor's imaginary scenario of her being the only one there when a tiger escapes was simply to illustrate that there is use in learning how to use it, even if she never intends to be the one using it on an animal. And she did say she would learn. Likely, if one of the wolves were to escape and she for some reason was the only one around that knew how to use the tranquilizer gun, she would use it.

      Ya they're only using the tranq because the wolf dogs aren't comfortable enough to let them get close enough with the poke stick, that would allow them to tranq them without a dart. This is for the wolf dogs comfort and well-being until they are well acclimated and comfortable with the animal care staff

This tranquillizer isn't going to be something that needs to happen tomorrow. They just want to be prepared for when it does happen. It's called figuring it out before you need it. I have no doubt they will! It's being responsible for things none of us would be, and saving lives we never even knew needed saving! @@gbry71honestly I think the negativity is warranted to some degree. If I were running an animal sanctuary I certainly wouldn’t want to tranquillize my animals either, definitely a terrible thought, but when it gets to the point that having a tranquilizer on site becomes a necessity as well as learning how it works and how to use/load it, you bet your ass I’m gunna be paying very close attention and getting hands on so I know exactly how to take care of the animals in my sanctuary in every situation.
      You can’t say that that is what was being shown in this video. You just can’t. What I saw was pretty cut and dry reluctance to learn something that is incredibly important for the safety of everyone involved. And that’s disappointing.

I've seen people call the dart gun a firearm, people assuming this is for "putting the wolves down" if they escape or for some other emergency situation, assuming Connor is completely untrained, etc. All of these are wrong.
      IDK wtf is wrong with this comment section. Bunch of ragey babies invaded the channel or something.

    • @TitaniumTurbine
      @TitaniumTurbine Před 2 měsíci +6

      @@Travesty9090 I agree with you... I believe the reasoning for the negative reactions are just a sign/symptom of the root issue - the level of actual subject matter knowledge, education, and understanding that Maya/Alveus’s audience actually has on these topics. It seems that when the observing audience thinks of Alveus, they think of cute animals moseying about in a sanctuary… not the realities of such work.
      HOWEVER, I don’t see any issue whatsoever with this tranquilizer training/preparedness being for emergencies… outside of animal medical emergencies, then it absolutely should be for emergency situations such as the potential for escape/breach/attack. It is absolutely one of the most responsible things they could prepare for.
      In scouts, they drilled “always be prepared” into us to the point where failing to prepare for obvious risks can make people feel like total failures. I really think people here should put on their critical thinking caps and consider the animals and risks Alveus has on site. It’s always better to have and not need contingency plans than it is to need and not have them.

I have to exercise all of them, every time, all of the time. 4:52 she makes it crystal clear that that's exactly what she's doing, and it sends a bad message. ITS FENTANYL???
    I took that for years for a long term illness, its so dangerous I wouldn't even go near it again. We were camping once and it was around 90 degrees even in the tent and the heat was enough that it started absorbing WAY more medicine through the patch than was meant to (this is why they warn about heated blankets), I couldn't even move enough to get off the ground or call for help I had to call my dad who was literally sitting right in front of the tent, and he couldn't even understand me cause i was whispering. Fortunately he came over to check and was able to bring ice from the coller to put on it and get water for me (which I could not actually sit up and swallow for about 15 minutes).
    Youd be fine from just accidentally touching a bit (though definitely wash your hands anyway), but if the needle actually goes in you need to get treatment IMMEDIATELY. Id ask your primary care doc to prescribe naloxone nasal sprays, thats what paramedics carry to reverse opioid overdoses, and yes it can be used on pets if they get into it too, iust have someone spray it right in their nose.
    Unfortunately my pediatric pain dr was really bad, and didn't bothwr telling me naloxone/naltrexone existed. My current pain dr was appalled.

Connor isn't bad, but needs to know the process by heart and be able to get people trough it without hesitation. You do not want to hesitate if a wolf have a health issue and you need to quickly sedate the other. And everyone at Alveus needs to get trained. Even if they don't like the idea. Knowing the whole process makes you useful when it's needed. Even if you simply fetch the supplies needed, you'll know what to get.

If an animal got loose and was an actual concern to the health of a human being, I find it hard to believe she would be able to do anything but cower in the corner and call for help, which may show up too late to save someone from injury or death. Respecting animals and being concerned about their well-being is one thing, but prioritizing them over the lives of a human is next level evil. I know, this was being done for a vet visit, and I know there is always someone there and they can learn to use dart gun instead but the point remains. Maya seems like a steward for animal welfare when it’s comfortable for her, which sort of flies in the face of the entire point of alveus in general.

Feeding animals, getting supplies, scheduling events/guests and managing employees/volunteers. The list truly goes on and on, and yea it would be quite silly to suggest someone with 0 carpentry skills even attempt to build enclosures, like you said. Why then put yourself on this stream at all? Why not up front in the beginning say hey, I’m not comfortable with this, so Connor will be taking the reins on this one. Maybe even stick around and be entertaining, educate us on exactly what sort of scenario this dart gun would be used in. Tell us why, even though it looks scary and has the same FEELING as a gun, it’s not only a safe way to handle vet visits, but also could save human or animal lives if anything unforeseen were to ever happen. Encourage Connor, invite other employees/volunteers to learn. Make it light, and fun, and educate. Instead she literally acted cold, talked down to Connor and overall acted like was she morally above doing anything that would ever so much as put an animal in the slightest bit of discomfort (a needle being injected via a dart). I’m not asking her to do every job, but don’t act like you’re willing to learn something and then complain the entire time, before saying “yea I’m actually never doing this” and then being dismissive and rude for an entire stream. Just tell us up front, this isn’t something I’ll be doing, but I’ll make sure several volunteers are well versed so if anything happens we are covered. Imo she should know how to do this and more, but it’s not my nonprofit. When you keep wild animals, ambassadors or not there are going to be tough decisions to be made, and the animals are going to have to be uncomfortable sometimes.
