    I am a white girl with a medical condition; I have worn wigs since 1988. I have always been ashamed to even allow my friends to see my real hair, it is not good at all.. Since I just heard this song for the first time it BLEW my mind. Wow...I am touched, profoundly and I love what you wrote! Thanks for sharing.

    This song ministers to our souls. You are Not your Hair. That's either relaxed or natural. You are not what people see on the outside. You are your spirit being that is on the INSIDE. 1 peter 3:3 whose adorning let not be the external, of braiding of hair and putting around of gold, or putting on of garments, but the hidden man of the heart, in the imperishable of the gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth before God.

    As a white dude with natural straight, long, blond hair, I feel guilty for identifying with this song; like it's the worst kind of appropriation. But really, the point of the song is that you should judge a person by their character, not their appearance, right? And that's a message no intelligent person can disagree with.

    This song isn't just for natural-haired girls. Recently I've been feeling bad about my relaxer because of this whole natural movement. I got my hair relaxed when I was twelve; I was being bullied at school and wanted to "transform", and I'd always hated my kinky hair because it was SUPER unmanageable. A lot of these "natural" girls I see have looser or at least neater curls; if that's what my natural hair looked like, I would wear it, but my hair was constantly tangled, dry, and stuck straight up- there was no way I could make it work. Four years later I regret the motive, but I don't regret the action, even though my hairdresser thought it was appropriate to cut my hair up to my ears after my first relaxer and it still hasn't fully recovered after a slew of vitamins, potions and treatments. I like my hair this way; it's more convenient and less painful, which is what I wanted all along. After all, I am not my (kinky or straight) hair. #teamrelaxed 😊💜

      we are all on the same team. anyone who made you feel otherwise. thats the problem with the black community, still suffering from the willie lynch mentality. as long as youre comfortable with yourself, your true self, then by all means. be beautifully relaxed, as you are. many, including myself, find it that they must love their true selves by being natural. and I agree, there definitely needs to be better representation for the natural community, but there is no such thing as unmanageable, you just dont want to manage it, which is okay. take it from a 4c, it possible, and rewarding.

    • @my2kidsism

      Girl cut your split ends & get some braids to grow your hair to the length you want it to be. Forget what other ppl think about YOUR hair. Ppl will always have their own opinion of you regardless. If you get the right braider your hair will grow like crazy. Work on the inside of you b/c although you act as if its your hair you're unhappy with by reading this I don't think your hair is the only thing making you unhappy with yourself. Find out what it is inside that you're unhappy with & work on it but never let your hair or outward appearance define who you are as a person.

      I agree. I've seen so many natural hair movement videos-I feel they often belittle others who wear anything not natural-wigs, perms weaves, extensions, etc. I suppose you've seen them too so I won't say much about the comments they make. I think they should be listening to this song every time preach about how others should wear their hair. I have been natural for over 45 years. Short afro. I am a 4c with a limited curl pattern. Winter is coming, I hate hats and will wear a shortie do on real cold days. As the song goes how you wear your hair does not make you a better person. You are the soul that lives within.

    This is so touching. I spent my whole life trying to get my hair to be "pretty, perfect, and smooth" like a white girl. And about 75% of that time being depressed when it was limp, dead, lifeless, dull and ugly, No more! Cut off all the heat and relaxer damaged ends, rocking a TWA and going all natural.

  • @marshavaughan7449
    @marshavaughan7449 Před 9 lety +54

    Beautifully Kinky Did you miss the message of the song? She even said " If I wanna wear it straight or all down my back, I don't see not a problem with that" Not saying she is talking about perms per se, but throughout the whole song she's saying WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR HAIR DOES NOT MATTER, IT'S YOUR HAIR. Also emphasizing that people should not be looked down on no matter what they choose to do with their hair. DREADS, PERM, RELAXER, NATURAL. So who cares if "natural is what your born with not perms" Some people are born with blonde hair and still dye it brown/black. WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? There's more to people than their hair, which was the moral of the song.

  • @MzShaybutta
    @MzShaybutta Před 12 lety +3

    Actually what's so ironic about this song, (which I love), is this song isn't just for black women, it was made for Melissa Etheridge, a white woman who did a rendition of Janis Joplin at the grammy's completely bald but rocked the concert. That performance inspired India to write the lyrics. Melissa Etheridge had breast cancer and because of Chemo lost all of her hair....But she didn't hide or put a wig on. She did HER! I saw that performance, very powerful statement!! I am not my hair!!

    This is song is encouraging people to not judge others on appearance or how to choose to present themselves however I see people are STILL doing so in the comments! It is a real shame women who have transitioned or have 'natural' hair tend to feel a superiority on others, you can love who your are but do not have to put others down doing so.
    I have been natural all my life yet I will never look down on someone who chooses to perm or weave their hair. There is no reason to. I am not my hair. YOU are not hair. Please remember this.

    I'm mixed half aa & half native. I can identify with this song. Outward appearance shouldn't matter it's what's on the inside is what counts. My hair is curly, it doesn't know if it wants to be aa or native american styling it is hard sometimes I don't style it but it doesn't define who I am it's just hair. You can be the most beautiful person on the outside but on the inside the ugliest person.
    I've learned to work on the inside & that beauty is what's most important. If you're beautiful inside shows.

    I love this song! My hair is natural and love it. I love the message behind this song too. Ladies, do what makes you feel beautiful, because we all are, we just need to feel it for ourselves. :-)

    listening to this and cutting all my hair off. it used to be my identity. at first it was long and beautiful, and i had amazing curls. next, i began straigtening it and dying it. next, i began getting relaxers from the age of 12. and i did my last one at around 14 while still straightening my hair throughout those years and up until i was 15, then i stopped using all heat. i'm nearly 17 now, and my hair is dead. i realized i killed it while trying to fit in. i tried to change my culture and be like the white girls with the pin straight pony tails. i regret that and can't change what i've done but i am me now. i need no identity but my own. i am not my hair. hello the the women reading this considering going natural. it's an amazing journey and you'll realize that it's so much more than just your hair, it's about finding yourself. (also, i realized that i can rock this mini fro lol) good luck beauties! xx

    Watching India Arie perform this song last year on Black Girls Rock inspired me to do something I was always too scared (or too proud) to do ... cut it off. It's still one of the best things I've ever done for myself

    this song is not team #natural or team #weave or team #braids, this song says you can wear hair regardless of who you are and remain who you are. You shouldn't be judged by your hair, skin, or anything physical. you should be judged on the content of within.

    I am Mexican and I have 3B hair and I really do appreciate this song even though I am not and I don’t have natural hair it really it really resonated with me because growing up I member hearing people saying that I need to straighten it look prettier in to say that your hair will look much nicer he will straighten and having curly hair it was like kind of a bad thing so I like this song

    I loved this song before and I love it more than ever! When I went to get the big chop after 5 months of trying to transition and grow out my natural hair into my relaxed hair, I took a deep breath, went to the hair dresser and said I'm going to get it done! I've never loved my hair more than I love it right now cx

    And you are not alone! I did the same several years ago, thinking that I would let it grow back right away, but found it so comfortable that its now been 5 or 6 years and I still shave it off! I find that I still get hit on, but now its always by sincere and polite guys who look me in the eyes and genuinely appear interested in knowing me. Shaving my hair was like an unexpected freedom from invisible chains . (AND how great is it to save so much time and money spent on products as a bonus!)

    Medications and health problems have made my once pretty thick hair become very thin. So thin I see my scalp when I look in the mirror. This song hit my soul when I heard it and after 30 years of being a childhood cancer survivor and taking the radiation side effects head on I realized I AM NOT MY HAIR! We all are much more than our hair or our skin.
