  • What does diversity and inclusion mean to you? How can diversity and inclusion lead to organizational success? Why do so many efforts to tap into the benefits of diversity fall short? How do we practice empathy and compassion when our brains are hard-wired to judge?
It is challenging to create and sustain diversity and inclusion in our organizations and communities when we are instinctually driven to seek the shelter and familiarity of our “us” identity groups. In order to build serious, sustainable diversity and inclusion efforts, we have to override our instinctual desire to engage in “us” vs. “them” thinking.
In this talk, facilitator Maria Morukian offers the concept of expansion as the missing link to driving genuine engagement in diversity and inclusion. Expansion requires us to walk out onto the bridge across our differences, to challenge our unconscious biases, and seek community even when we hold very different cultures, beliefs, and values. Maria outlines three practices to build expansion into dialogues around the most uncomfortable topics that divide us.

What are the diversity and inclusion challenges you face in your community, organization, or team? How can expansion help you build connections across the biggest differences?

While pursuing D&I initiatives, I have trouble melting fear from differing demographics. I'm still a tall white male in America, and despite all my efforts, each and every time when going into new spaces, it's an uphill battle. So I'm constantly trying to learn better ways to approach and gain acceptance before we're able to collaborate. I am sure you have ideas? Thank you Maria!
