    Great video guys! Im a newbie to in ear monitors but learning heaps from your vids. I have a question regarding crossovers in in-ear monitors. I'm looking at 2 different sets which both have 5 drivers, only difference is one has 5 way crossover and the other set has 2 way crossover. Is the 5 way crossover going to sound much different, or not really? Cheers.

    Stephen, thank you so much for referring me over to these videos on your channel. Just caught up on the videos. Awesome videos! Thank you so much. I know you emphasize that you are not all things authority for in ears but maybe you can help. At the beginning of the video you stated a drummer that just plays along to music at the end of the day and also perhaps a drummer that plays for church. I have gathered that there could be different needs for both applications. My aspirations are to be able to play again at church so maybe that's the bigger need than my current situation of playing at home. Is there a specific recommendation you have for that scenario? I don't want to make the investment and then realize I need more. However, I would like to be able to listen to music through the in ears and play along at home and still enjoy it vs getting a mix into the in ears where it's just lows and mids and can't hear highs all that clear to where if I listened to music I'd rather go get my Sony head phones. Hopefully something versatile. Would something like their 4 driver be good? Big low, 2 mid drivers and small high be enjoyable for listening to music and playing along or not enough highs? Or since highs don't need as much work, will that be pretty balanced too? Thank you so much!

    I want to listen to music/watch movies/play games. I've tried many different bt headphones, the best sounding so far were the only ones with with multiple drivers (the sound core liberty 2 pros in first, and the soundpeats truengine 3 se somewhere near first). I have been shopping around for IEMs because the difference I noticed with the Liberty 2 pros (with a dynamic driver and a balanced armature) was like watching tv vs watching real life. Well maybe not quite that big, but it felt like I stepped through the door in to a whole new experience. I am eyeing the KZ ZS10 pros with a realtively flat sound signature, 1 BD 4 BAs, and I don't care if they are wired or not. I just want to know if I can expect a huge jump in quality from good earbuds to iems.

    Great presentation guys...I really like your advice about never wearing just one ear and using an audience mic...this is so important. You only get the one set of ears...cherish your hearing!
    Does Alclair also provide a flat reference ear plug? I know you mentioned using the ear buds for protection, but for practice when no monitors are necessary flat plugs are a great tool and still allow the wearer to hear the full range of freqs...just at a lower volume.

    I have the spires. Great quality. I do wonder if I should have got the Crankmasters (CMVK). I love the low end on the spires so much, but the high end does get fatiguing to me. Again it's preference. But it's kind of crazy because i'm a guitarist/lead vocalist. I love low end energy when i perform and Alclair delivers. I wonder if the CMVK would give me anough high end as a singer.

  • @debsattam1
    @debsattam1 Před 3 lety +3

    It's all about tuning the drivers doesn't matter if it's twenty or just a single dynamic tuned to perfection.

    • @ironblast5
      @ironblast5 Před 2 lety +1

      This isn't true it does help when they are tuned properly but it does matter having more drivers allows better frequency separation and more headroom before hitting clipping distortion. It also allows for better instrument separation and wider sound stage.

    • @debsattam1
      @debsattam1 Před 2 lety

      @@ironblast5 That only applies to speakers as there is more air available for iems it will effect very minor to non as there is very less air to travel the frequency's .

    I am really new to what you are hearing through the ear monitors and where the music is coming from. They sound like a great idea but I need answers to my questions so I can make the best decision. Thank you.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  Před 6 lety

      william sharp Hey William...in ear monitors are essentially high end headphones. These are molded to your ear and offer a way for you to hear the music, whether in a live situation or Just trough your phone, through high quality speakers. They are used most of the time in Live situations to replace floor monitors.

    Another great video, Stephen!
    Quite timely for myself, since I've been considering a good pair of in-ears for myself, even though I'm not actually playing at our church yet. Just thought I'd start putting the money aside for it.
    I lead the sound team at our church, so I'm familiar with the one in-ear monitor thing. Even though our musicians know that a it's not good, they still do it. They tell me that it's so that they can be more aware of what's happening in the rest of the room.
    I was thinking that it might help to eliminate the single monitor syndrome if we put an ambient mic out over the audience somewhere and make that background sound available in their monitor mix.
    Haven't yet found the right placement for the mic to achieve a suitable ambient sound yet, so it's been sitting on the shelf for little awhile.
    If anyone else has already tried something like that, I'd be interested to know what their experience has been.
    Rich

    • @n0iseboy
      @n0iseboy Před 6 lety

      Rich Behe Rich...if they refuse to wear both ears...there's not a lot you can do besides educate them and advise them they they are absolutely damaging their hearing...it was explained quite well in the video. As their advocate, I will say, using in ears isolates the talent from the room and audience and it's difficult to feed from the energy in the room when you can't hear the applause and reactions. An audience mic is imperative for this reason. I prefer a large diaphragm condenser. Down stage right, left, or both. High pass the mics and even roll off the low end shelving eq a bit to mitigate phase errors in the low end. It's best if you can ride those sends. Use just enough...not much...when they're playing, then push the faders or sends up a bit to find a sweet spot for applause and reaction between the songs.
      Hope that helps...
      Also...it is most practical for whoever is mixing to have the same point of reference as the band members. Everyone should be using the same product when possible...

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  Před 6 lety +2

      Rich Behe So at my church, which is fairly large, they place one on each side of the stage facing out (discreetly obviously). That enables us to have a somewhat stereo room mix. It’s then made available as a channel on our mixes and labeled “house”. Some love it. I don’t use it much. Muddies up my mix. But most of the players utilize it to some extent.

    • @n0iseboy
      @n0iseboy Před 6 lety

      Stephen Taylor Stephen, have whoever is mixing dump everything under 600hz on the input strip for the audience mics...you don't need those bandpasses...you don't want those bandpasses...you just want to hear the mids and highs of people's voices and applause.

    • @iwundr2
      @iwundr2 Před 6 lety

      That's precisely what I had in mind, Stephen. We use the Behringer X32 mixer, so the musician's can use their own devices to mix their own monitors. Of course, in a church setting it has nothing to do with applause, it's more for staying aware of what the ministry teams are doing.
      I was playing around with just one condenser mic positioned over the audience. I hadn't tried positioning 2 mics nearer to the platform. Sounds like a great idea. I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

    • @iwundr2
      @iwundr2 Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the input Angelo. Our praise & worship teams are made up of volunteers, so it's not my place to demand anything from them. They have been made well aware of the results it can have. All of our musicians have the same wireless monitors. A few have their own personal in-ear monitors. So this just seems to be a good way to save the hearing of the ones who chose not to use both monitors.

    Where is the sweet spot for driver count, for a given total price should we invest all the money in a single high quality driver or should we spread that money in multiple driver ? If so how many ? ( For example 90% of speakers are 2 drivers design, so the sweet spot for speakers is 2)

    Waste $20 on some 2 drivers. Even for budget people I would invest it a $100 set of IEM’s with 8 drivers. Most of the cheap ones are just regular headphones that are made to look like IEM’s
