Rest in Peace my dear friend. a slide show of a few Tommy Makem photo's. For some reason there is a small flutter in Tommy's voice...I'm not sure why, the original recording is clear.
Us as republicans stand on the shoulders of giants we have witnessed the best generation of republicans and now Irish unity is feels closer than ever before may god bless our patriot dead🇮🇪32
Love Tommy Maken singing this song. My mother always sang this song at the wonderful sing-along parties we had growing up in Dublin Ireland. She was the mother of nine children who loved Ireland and longed to see a United Ireland. It didn't happen in her lifetime, it might in mine, her daughter, Fiona. May my mother, father, late husband and Tommy Maken R.I.P. I am blessed for having been born Irish. Long Live Ireland and the cause for Irish freedom.
I took my rock 'n' roll brother to see a Tommy Makem concert, and when Tommy began this song, I wasn't the only one in tears. A majestic human being with a monumental talent that reached the heart and touched the soul. God, he gave so much of himself so that we may hear and know and learn. I hope God loves heartfelt Irish songs sung by the best of them!
This is my personal favourite version by Tommy. It is one of the best written history songs I have ever heard. Old woman = Ireland , the 4 fields = the 4 provinces of Ireland , her proud sons = those that fought and died for Ireland. even the famine is brought in to this song. Genius = Tommy.
@@ianbaillie6868 It was in fact written by Tommy in a car one night as he drove across the border from Dundalk to Keady...I heard him tell the story years ago on radio. "Makem frequently described the song as having been inspired by a drive through the "no man's land" adjoining Northern Ireland, where he saw an old woman tending livestock. She was oblivious to the political boundaries that loomed so large in the public's eye; the land was older than the argument, and she didn't care what was shown on the map."

So do I my friend....The most despicable act was to divide our country on a sectarian headcount. Thank God that is now coming to an end...when everybody on the island will be treated equally regardless of creed or religion.
Met and talked with Tommy many times, at The Irish Pavilion in NYC....as charming and ingratiating as anyone I have ever met. I am still amazed that he and the Clancys are gone...He and Liam, along with Ron Daderio on stage, were a force... I hope that there are others in the future to carry on their incredible legacy of music and charm....Peace
I was fortunate to get to see tommy live. I got to meet him. He was an amazing singer and a great storyteller. Very warm heart and just an all around good guy to talk to. Tommy, you're music touched me when you were here and it still touches me now that you're gone. Someday when I'm on the other side, I will see you again and thank you again in person for what your music has done for me. Miss you, mate.

Tommy Makem touched so many people in his life. His place on E.57th St.in Manhatten was so hospitable to all.He was so friendly to all who visited there. He is missed for his music, his pride in his Irish culture and religion. He was so easy to meet. His time with the Clancy Bros.is legendary.God Bless you Tommy you mean a lot to all of us.
my dear friend and mentor. I spent years with tommy him teaching me songs all along the way. He also sang Roddy McCorley great too. Rest in peace forever and always.
Tommy RIP. You are still a genius. Your songs and great performances will live forever and make your friends and family so proud. You are a credit to Ireland and I believe the 4th Green Field will bloom 🇮🇪 in my lifetime. God bless ☘🍀🇮🇪💚
I met Tommy in a pub in Vancouver, BC, in the 1970s. He was a really nice, down to earth guy. He wrote some great songs, like this one and Farewell To Carlingford. He was a Keady man.
What a beautiful tribute to Tommy Makem. It brought tears to my eyes. As I've said many times, I first saw Tommy perform when I was ten years old. I fell in love with him then and thought he was the handsomest man on earth until the day he died. The Bard of Armagh, a life well-lived and well-remembered. Thank you.
One of our greatest Irish singers, along with the Clancy Brothers he was so in instrumental in bringing Irish music to the forefront of America's music scene. RIP Tommy, you are sorely missed.
I still weep when I hear your heavenly voice, Tommy. You have made this world a warmer, kinder place to dwell and I hope you are singing of thyme and heather in heaven. There will never be a voice with the same resonance and timbre as yours.
What a magical both speaking & singing voice, beautiful diction I hope where ever you are that you will entertain them as you did when you entertain me & others. Thank you & may you rest in peace .
I saw Tommy on a bus on which I was a passenger in 1974 in Cape Breton. he just stepped aboard to say hello to the people. I was 12 years old. If the Beatles had boarded that bus, the welcome would have been no greater from the passengers. Rest in peace Tommy.
The silence is deafening..... so many lost this year....Glad that we can hear these and remember one of the Great Ones. NO ONE else does this so well. Slan Abhaile! His son is now a friend, and is continuing the tradition with all the professionalism, and talent of his father.
remember the first time I heard Tommy Makem sing his song at his restaurant in New York-so powerful it blew me away! ---it was around 1982--on another occasion, I was lucky to meet with all the Clancy's backstage at Brittingham's in Lafayette Hill, PA--miss them!
A very happy birthday Tommy. You were one of a kind never to be duplicated again. Thank you for the endless hours of music, stories and humor. You are truly missed. R.I.P.
As long as Celtic musicians come on the scene, that song by Tommy Makem truly will be a part of their repetoire. I first heard this in the 1970s and my love for this song has only increased with the passing of the years!
I saw Tommy Makem and Paddy Clancy perform this song at Stonehill College now many years ago with my Mother. This is my favorite rendition yet. I was given a home made cd by a friend of hers that I treasured for years.
My grandmother, Bridget Molloy, was born in Croagh, Donegal in 1988. I can't listen to this without crying and aching for the many souls that fought for freedom and a united Ireland.

That's what England did to Ireland. And much more then that even.
