If only you two share the same feelings, and if only the universe and destiny transpired you two to be together, it could've been something beautiful. Notice how the background of the lyric video is a pool/fountain with lots of pennies in it? Every pennie was thrown with a wish behind it. And the lyric „roaring twenties, tossing pennies in the pool. And of my wishes came true, it would‘ve been you“. She really wished that this one person would‘ve been the 1 for her. So every pennie we see lying in the bottom are all of her wishes that this person would‘ve been the one.

I am a recent fan and the depth of Ms. Swift’s poetic artistry is just stunning. The majority of people who only know her by Shake It Off are missing out on such an amazing artist. She so much deserves all her success. She bridges so many genres so effortlessly.

The interesting thing is how she sings it. I'm listening to the song right now and if I didn't look at the lyrics, I wouldn't have known this line was so heavy. The musicality of the song really makes it feel like a _post_-examination of the relationship. She's reaching the tail end of depression and entering acceptance. However, this is just this line, and I'll have to check out the rest of the song. I think you're (still) spot-on.

Why did I only just realise that the use of "pennies" was deliberate. Firstly, to correspond with "the 1" since pennies are worth 1 cent. And secondly, because pennies are worth 1 cent, they may seem to be worthless. But in the grand picture, tossing pennies and then having the wishes come true (aka getting the 1 person of your dreams) means an inexplicable, infinite value. I'm in awe.

I have this on repeat for two days now. I've broken up a 6/7-ish relationship with a man I loved so so much. It was an okay relationship, it had its moments, but it became very evident that he didn't like me. I believe he might have grown to love me but he didn't like me, it's made me so passive, apathetic, and lifeless. He had plans in life but none for me, I was just a passenger. One day, I just woke up and decided that I didn't wanna be "not liked" anymore.
It's been months since the break up, and I've went on dates a couple times now. Nothing compares to how I feel for him tho.

According to me, this song is about a woman who is looking back on a relationship that ended. The woman seems to moved on from the pain of the loss, but still wonders how they could have come close to a lifetime together and parted ways. As she's speaking to her ex-lover, she wants to know if there's anything she could have done differently to keep them together.
The first verse she tells her ex-lover that she's doing well and learning to live her life to the fullest (Been saying "yes" instead of "no") She thinks of him at times, and thought she saw him at the bus stop. "I hit the ground running each night" might mean that while she's enjoying her life, she does notice that she's not doing those things with him. She reflects on their relationship, and decides that just because it didn't work out, doesn't mean their love wasn't worth it.
The pre-chorus she was surprised that they ended but now she has come to terms with it and used the painful experience to grow even more as a person (And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow)
The chorus she remembers their time together and muses that they "were something" special (But we were something, don't you think so?). If the wishes she had made when they were together had come true, he would have been the one she spent her life with (And if my wishes came true It would have been you). It's unclear if she still wants that. She admits that it's her fault too(In my defense, I have none For never leaving well enough alone). Whether she still wants to be with him or not, she thinks it would have been fun if he had been the one she settled down with, so their story together could go on for the rest of their lives.
The second verse she hopes that he's enjoying his life and moving on too (I have this dream you're doing cool shit)
She thinks that their relationship was worth it even though it ended, by deciding their love was one of the greatest of "all time"(You know the greatest love of all time are over now)
In the bridge she finds it difficult to leave her questions unanswered. Still, she resists, the urge to ask if he thinks that they might still be together if things had happened only a little bit differently.
In the 2nd chorus she admits that she has "no defense" for "digging up the grave" of their love to talk with him, but she keeps thinking about how close they seemingly came to staying together permanently.

A nice emotional song to hear when you are stressed. It will make all your stress fade away.
It's just so weird to think that we fall in love with people and think they're the one, only to find out they never were after things happen and we go our separate ways. This song reminds me of the time I was in Rome and throwing pennies into the Trevi Fountain with the girl I was in love with. Something in the back of my mind was telling me it was the last day I was spending with her and I threw my pennies wishing to see her again and begging for it not to end. A few hours later we ended things because time wasn't right and no matter how much we love each other it would never work for several reasons. It was the last time I saw her and I cried my eyes out in my walk back to the hotel. Needless to say my wishes didn't come true and maybe she really isn't the one but back then it felt right and now I wouldn't have changed anything knowing all the pain I have been through in her absence. She made me the happiest, I really hope she's doing well out there.

As a college student who hates her program this is hits different. I wanted architecture or fine arts, yet here I am a depressed 3rd year Accounting student. @@anisanurraudah8383 I think painting by the numbers refers to those children's coloring books in wich the different numbers in different parts of the drawings simbolize certain colors, to guide kids when they color. I think this line means that they never cared about the rules, but they made the most of their time. Also using the word "count" that relates to the theme of the numbers, but also refers to "making the most of"
