  • Rimshots, particularly when used for a backbeat, have been the bane of my existence - especially as a 'trad grip' drummer such as myself. A necessary evil, I'll show you some ways to get a consistent and great sounding rimshot each and every time.

I’m only 5 minutes in but this video seems like exactly what I need, I also despise rimshots, think they’re the hardest thing to be consistent with

Thank you SO much Darryn, can't say it enough! I have alot of troubles with getting my rimshots consistent, most advice I've really got was the same Just Keep Doin It" but it still hasn't happened, I'm tryin ur technique, thanks again

This literally improved my rimshots over night. Its a great way to think about using the meaty part of your thumb for the primary downward motion and absorption of the impact. I also moved my snare up higher. Before i was tensing and clenching my hand with every impact and it felt horrible. But its night and day now, it might even be easier for my since i bury the stick Charlie Watts style. And the funny part is that visually it looks almost indistinguishable, but its totally different finger and muscle groups in use. Great vid!

Hello Darryn!! Thank you for share thsi amazing video but what I really want to thank you is for sharing your experience in your early twenties with rimshots, that happened me a few months ago. I've been playing for many years, I'm a self-taught drummer and never paid attention to rimshots till I finally took some lessons with a good friend and he told about the rimshots and maaaan, It's hard to star again LOL. Anyway, Thanks for the video

My pleasure and thanks for your comment. Rimshots can be very frustrating to nail each time. Hang in there.

Thanks Darryn! The idea that 'eventually we'll get the rim shot' has proven inaccurate. It has taken a lot of effort to get it where it is for me, using different phases of the para diddles as accent notes. I've also found that I do need to "play through the mistakes" as it very tempting to stop, swear, and start again, instead of maintaining the rhythm and getting the muscles to learn. I don't play trad grip, but this was still very useful...thanks again.

Thanks for the video Darryn, I watch football and work on trad grip with a snare in front of me all the time and these exercises + explanations are exactly what I was searching for. Great work!

Hey daniel, one day of practicing rimshot with your technique definitely made a difference for me. 👏.
could you do a video on your general technique using traditional grip? For example, are you moving your fingers away from stick as you play faster? Thankx for excellent videos 👍

Hello Darryn and thanks for the video(s)! I have also found rimshots very difficult with trad grip. Actually kind of given up, but after seeing this video I'm gonna try again! Your style of teaching is very pleasent and very cool stuff you teach! I'm gonna order your book too! Keep on doing your thing, I will follow😊 ps. Greetings from Finland

Thank you! Focusing on minimising the movement and synchronisation while practising really pays of very quick. There’s is something about the sound of a rimshot in traditional grip (when its landing the right way) that I can’t achieve with the matched grip.

Great video showing the wrist action with the thumb. My only concern injuries to the thumb hitting the rim with that much force?
