Nah, punching hard is a linemen thing, if that. You can’t physically impede someone running with a jam with pads on and stuff, it’s used as a range finder and to get you in position. Punching hard and missing will get you beat with someone running down field opposed to the constricted confinement of trench play.

Not hard at all. People overthink it and think you have to slow down progress and jam them hard or something. It’s a range-finder; all you have to do is place the correct hand to the correct shoulder and let it guide you into position.

You weren’t taught to pay attention, I see. You can’t force someone to not go anywhere, what you can do is put yourself in the best position to make a play. By allowing a free release you run the risk of having to reach and pull to stay in-phase, which happened to him, and you can be stacked just like he was...Not sure why you said giving up the inside is an issue. Depending on your DC’s play-call, you can play with inside or outside technique on any given play. What’s called will also impact what your other teammates do, too, to combat it.

What I was trying to convey is a bit of a big idea: While I did my marching band thing, I was only ever really aware of the outcome of plays. I never really understood beyond the superficial level why they worked (that guy caught the ball, that guy pressured the quarterback into a bad throw, etc.), why they were called...just the how's and why's of the game. So I'm wondering if you know of a good source that makes an attempt to teach the ins and outs of football such that ignorant fans such as myself can better understand and appreciate what we're seeing when we watch the games and even your film breakdowns.
In my case, I never really appreciated the theme park master class that is Disney World until I worked several summers in a terrible theme park.

Even in something as simple as these two reps, I talked about the balance of Stingley being a little off, him running while grabbing or not actually attempting to press him and only trying to get in-phase a little after a free release etc....Beyond that, I can't help you, personally.
