Separating cows from calves is one of the final steps in a year of Montana Ranching.
Real cattle ranchers only get paid once per year. That is at shipping time in the fall.
The calves are weened on the same day they are shipped. It is a stressful but rewarding day in a Montana ranchers life.

To those who think its mean to separate calves from their moms: It is necessary, the calves are old enough to eat on their own. With winter coming on, the mommas don't need to be using their strength making milk. They need to be in good shape to make it through the winter. Its better for both the cow and the calf, especially in a cold winter climate. If you left them together, the calf is more likely to wind up motherless anyway as the cow may not make it through the winter. As to the separation, they get over it in a few days.
Yep thats correct. People also have an issue with the tappin the cows on the butt to get/keep em moving. It is literally next to nothing for the animal. They move off pressure. The tapping is more about noise and putting pressure on them. In no way does it hurt the cow. At all.

When the kids used to get upset at the calves & cows bawling, I used to tell them it was just the calves starting school. Then it was ok. 😃

I know absolutely nothing about cattle or ranching but I LOVE this channel. So glad I found it. There is something so calming and soothing about it. From the cows mooing to the sound a leather saddle makes. In this tech savvy automated world it really is great to go back in time to how our great grandparents lived in the 1800s. The GO PRO or whatever Trinity uses when he’s riding makes you feel like YOU are on the horse. So cool.

You all make working all those cattle look easy. The first cow we got we were clueless. It was New Year’s Day evening. It was dark cold and raining. Everything was so muddy we couldn’t get our trailer to the pasture so I not having a clue though I would just unload her and the calf and walk her back. She was halter trained after all….. NOT! Lol. She came out of that trailer like greased lightning dragging me behind like nothing. We chased her for miles up and down the main road for hours. She even got hit by a car and never even slowed down. I eventually was able to get the halter rope tied to our suv and then to our tractor to lead her back home. An experience I’ll never forget. We still have the cow.

Here in Australia, we call a ranch like this a ‘cattle station’, and I have worked on a few in my younger years. The first time I was involved in weaning the calves on a property I was working on, the hands I was working with left a a cow and calf in the yard as the last pair to be separated. Then the boss casually, suggested that I move that old cow out of the yard so they could get the calf in the pen with the others. I was a bit green at the time, so I didn’t realise they were setting me up. Apparently this old cow, was notorious for her bad temper, and when I walked toward her waving my arms to try and move her, she just pawed the ground once, and proceeded to send me over the fence. I was pretty careful after that.
That’s some tough work and definitely a young persons job. Like many tactical occupations, the body starts saying no after a particular age. You’re doing great work for America. Thank you.

As a techer of English I was abre to learn a lot of vocabulary. This is done in Uruguay too. In fact, I was one of the helpers on horseback. Great video.

It’s crazy how animals have a stronger instinct to protect their calves than some ppl have with their own kids
How different is what you're doing to separate them. When we were separating Roosevelt elk (wapiti) we ran herds through a purposely made barn and pushed them them through one by one into a "crush" to also give them any shots, like Ivermectin, etc
Then the little ones were put in a special field with green alfalfa hay (cut early)
This, though, is so spectacular. I just love it !

It seems like the folks who can perform this task smoothly and quietly are akin to magicians.
The animals stay calm and they weigh more on the truck because they don’t run off as much weight.
Interestingly at some of the ranches in certain states, we had to have a state branding inspector present in order to be able to ship a large calf crop.
Sitting by the fire, having a cuppa and this is causing me stress. 😳

Reminds me of an old skit. "You 'ave been found guilty of the heinous crime of buggery on the 'igh seas. 'ow d'ya plead?" I think you just go with the customs and definitions of your home country. People are smart enough to figure it out. You might not have to walk th' plank. You got nothing on ol' Paul when he come with his semi to move our cattle to the south place. He didn't abide any stragglers did ol' Paul. Load 'em up quick, he did. Called them all sorts of names. I was just a young sprout then too.
Some of the ranches stated using the weaning rings in the caves noses. It’s just a temporary plastic ring that slides on, it don’t hurt the calf at all and they can stay with mom till the day before you ship. When the calf attempts to nurse the ring block them from latching a test. Seems to promote better weight retention and the are not bawling all week long. So you actually get to sleep that week or two till they ship.

If you truly want to become a cowboy just be prepared for some of the hardest work you will ever do...15 to 20 hour days is not uncommon and it rules your life... cowboying is not for everyone...but it is a very rewarding job and you fall in love with the lifestyle

Looks like that could wear you out at the end of the day. I guess getting your boots and Spurs dirty is just part of the job. I went and checked out the wag bars they don't have any and they don't know when or even if they're ever going to get any back or make anymore. That's pretty sad those things look pretty good. I love this video i remember we always helped our dad Sort and it was always simmering going on but life changes and being a cowboy gets more expensive until it doesn’t make sense anymore 😢

We just weaned about 2 weeks ago and it was snowy and 10 degrees. It has not changed. Just more snow. I'm watchin yall wean and thinkin..yep that looks nice haha.
Also I cringed just a little watchin you struggle for a second on closing that trailer door. I've had cows get in and immediately say nope and turn around and blast back through while I'm trying to get it shut. Sketchy.

I see you’re using paddles to move the cattle. I used to haul cattle out of Montana back in the late 70’s & 80’s and used hotshots to help load them on the semi’s. Don’t they let you use them anymore? Just wondering….
The paddles seem more effective when working the bigger groups of cattle and for sorting. For chute work and loading, a hotshot has it's use. These cows get loaded on semis several times a year so they rarely need the motivation to load. And the calves tend to load well too. But hotshots are still allowed.

Question: I have a cowy quarter horse in Northern California and we do occasional team penning, sorting and that sort of thing for fun. I figured that ranchers used horses for the same thing. But in this video the sorting was done on foot, not on horseback. How come?

I have friends in SD..real cowboys, they do everything on horseback, they don't sort in pens on foot with sticks.
