Success can be a double-edged sword. While it's great to reap the financial rewards of huge sales, it can also make designing a replacement that much trickier. Still, as problems go, it's a nice one to have. Mazda were faced with just such a predicament when they came to replace the second generation MX-5. Although evergreen was a word often used to describe this car, all vehicles have a shelf life and the Japanese company couldn't afford for this one to overstay its welcome. The third generation car was a bit bigger, a whole lot smarter but still true to the original formula. A used buy remains one of the safest roadster purchases you can make.

Ah the olden days where £25k can get you a Elise or TT, now even the entry model MX5 costs more than that… (I know need to adjust for inflation etc, but sadly wages has not grown at nearly the same pace as car prices…)

Besides getting slashed,the cloth top needs replacing after a while. The PRHT doesn't and is a little quieter. The cost of ownership and reliability beats the European cars hands down.

Mine still has the 2006 original soft top in very good condition.
MY 54 REG nb still has the original cloth roof and is in perfect condition.
Just garage it and the roof will be fine for decades
at the time, why would anyone go for the 1.8ltr? apart from it being slightly cheaper & why did Mazda offer one?

GRP roof, not metal.
Everything looks great except for those gaudy euro-license plates.
They are unnecessarily large, spoil the look of any car.

Six speed manual box, not five.
It depends on trim so you can get both - my friend has a 2011 with 5 speed. But yes the Sport Tech/top trims have the 6 speed

@@petrolpoodle6617 I'd forgotten you were in the UK. When I bought mine in Oz in 2010 only 6 speed and 2 litre on offer. Still have it and its value is going up now, especially as its a coupe/manual.
22k used... Looking now, can get a good used one for 5k now, bargain! So much car for the money
