Bin immer wieder erstaunt, wie gut diese alten Schellacks klingen, wenn nicht irgendwelche "Mastering-Experten" meinen, die Frequenzen oberhalb 4 kHz seien erst 1948 entdeckt worden.

    A loose translation follows:
    Oh, an ocean trip’s delightful,
It’s a dandy thing to sail,
For you'll soon see your companions
    Being seasick o'er the rail!
    (Chorus)
    Holla hiii, Holla hooo,
Holla hia hia hia, Holla ha ha ha ha ha!
    Holla hiii, Holla hooo,
Holla hia hia hia, Holla hooo!
In your left hand there's a brandy,
In your right a whisky straight,
And the sunshine gleams so brightly
    Off the captain's balding pate!
    (Chorus)
And the cook down in the galley,
    He's well-fed as any sow,
There he lies hip deep in turnips
With his bum deep in cacao!
    (Chorus)
    And the circling silver seagulls
Do their task with ardor keen
    ( What they do, I needn't tell you )
On the deck so scrubbed and clean!
    (Chorus)
Once you're home again, oh sailor,
All your life's ahead of you,
Soon you’ll have a wife and kiddies
    to play Father Christmas to!
    (Chorus)

That is actually a pretty solid song translation. Not a perfect match, but that's normal; one can hardly translate a song perfectly and make it rhyme too. There are some very good rhyming solutions, you're quite talented. Cheers!

@@IvanSCF Why thank you! I don't even speak that much German. I had help from Google Translate and a dictionary.

An alternate take without Sister Isa was probably done because at age 16, she was already in trouble with the government.

More likely because they wanted an all-male recording (without female vocals). Both recordings were made on the same day and both were published. If they had any problems with Isa, she wouldn't be allowed to record anything. I've noticed that there's apparently a German myth that Isa was mocking the German government with this song. Utter nonsense. It's an old humorous sailors' song. Isa didn't write its lyrics, she just recorded it, like many other performers. The main vocal performer of the 1935 polka arrangement was Erwin Hartung. Isa accompanied him in one recording (this one). The lyrics were published in a printed form as well, by Spezial-Verlag Robert Franke (a pro-government publisher).
