Reinforcing Water Damaged Ceiling In A Shuttle Bus-Feeling Out Our New Floorplan--Skoolie Ep. 30

  • We've been waiting for the day that we could finally take down our temporary ceiling posts and ITS HERE!! We put in the permanent reinforcement that will hold up the previously water damaged ceiling in our shuttle bus. With pretty much nobody to lean on when it came to this issue, we were left to come up with something on our own and we're very pleased with how sturdy our ceiling feels.

    Love the vid's! That 4x4 falling had to hurt!! I'm helping my son with a similar problem in an '98 El Dorado 32' shuttle bus. I'm taking a similar approach, but plan to run a 'header' across the bus in a few (4?) locations supported on either side by 4x4's. That should leave the center section of the bus open. I'm curious as to what you will have for interior height. The spec's I've found show 6' 7". Given what you put in for floor insulation and then ceiling insulation and covering, I'm thinking you'll be about 6' 1". Does that sound about right? Looking forward to your next video. (Of course, we subscribed a few weeks ago. :).

      I am.struggling with a sagging ceiling too, on my '98 Ford Aerotech shuttle. I would love to see your son's solution too. 🥴

      It definitely didn't feel great.. haha. It's looking like we'll end up around 6'4" with 1.5" of insulation in floor and ceiling. Our total floor thickness is 2 3/4" plus whatever decorative flooring we'll put on top. Since we scraped out the water damaged cardboard structure, that gave us an extra inch to inch and a half of headroom.

    I have a saggy ceiling too. How did you secure the wood to the ceiling and what jacks did you use? I want to support the ceiling without posts on the floor if possible (for party bus)

    Where did you get the steel reinforcement strips? Great idea

      We bought them from a local metal supplier. Metal Supermarkets is also a good place to get metal cut to size if there is one near you

    I have been following you guys pretty much from day 1. You have had everything that could possibly go wrong happen to you guys, and the positive attitude you have been able to maintain is amazing! I am planning to build out a bus of my own starting in the next year or so (it will NOT be on a shuttle bus platform - can you guess why?). I would love to see your build in person when done, as you guys are not that far away from me (Rockford, IL). Fingers crossed for you guys that the rest of your build goes smoothly!

      We try and keep it positive around here! Glad you can tell that. Don’t let our experience with a shuttle turn you away completely from them! Haha they’re still a good platform depending on what you’re looking for. Just know what to look for when buying!(clearly we didn’t know everything to look for😅) Hoping that we’ve found most of our problems and it should be only problems we create for ourselves from here on out haha. Let us know if you’d like to ever come see the bus! We’re in Cedarburg almost every weekend working on it.

    Hey, we have a similar bus and are in the middle of demo. Thank you so so so much for documenting and sharing your story.
    Question - why did you decide to use vertical supports? I ask because we have a shorter bus and we're trying to see if we can feasibly use horizontal supports bracketed to the steel above the windows. Any advise would be greatly appreciated! Thank you both.

    • @MilesOSmiles
      @MilesOSmiles  Před 3 lety

      Hey Thom, thanks for watching! We had to use 4x4 vertical supports because we took out the existing molded fiberglass ceiling/cardboard structure because it had been water damaged. Most builds wouldn't need the bigger posts especially since wall studs will also provide some support to the ceiling. We effectively have horizontally braced the bus as well now with the bed frame and some other things in the back so horizontal supports at the window framing could work

      @@MilesOSmiles Right on, thanks for hitting me back. We have bus of similar construction (21 passenger, so much shorter) -- vacuum-bonded honey-comb fiberglass. We're going to try braces across the cabin to the wall studs. Can't tell you enough how thankful I am for your channel. Cheers. Hope you two are ready for your move in date (shit is rapidly approaching!)

    Hey John, I am wondering where you got those metal sheet strips you ran across the top and how you bent them in the correct spots.

      I am dealing with a very similar issue on a 2004 25 foot El Dorado bus I just got and found quite a bit of water damage in the walls and ceiling. Would love to chat with you if you have some time!

    • @MilesOSmiles
      @MilesOSmiles  Před 2 lety

      Hey Nathan! I bought them from a local metal supplier. I ordered them a little longer than I thought I would need and then I cut them to length as needed. I made sure to get a thickness of metal that would have strength too it but still be pliable enough to form/bend it to match the ceiling.
