Billy really can play. His relay throw was pitch perfect, great mechanics, good follow through. Conan, literally dropped the ball. And after I heard he spent his career being a lifetime catcher.

My parents were both born and raised in NYC. Dad was born in 1917 and saw Ruth and Gehrig and co. play. He was a HUGE Yankees fan. Our family moved to Detroit in 1959, a year before I was born. He rooted for the Tigers but was still a devoted Yankees fan. As a kid it made no sense to me. We watched games together all the time, and on the rare occasions where a Yankees - Tigers game was on TV we were 'adversaries'. He often kept score when he watched a game. He'd make up one of those scorebook 'grids' for both tams, fill out the names for both lineups and track every hitter. He loved to talk about those old Yankees teams. He would have enjoyed seeing this. Great memories.
Being a yankees fan for 39 years and a conan fan for 25 i have no idea how i missed this. Awesome stuff

Fun stuff. When I was a kid, my dad took me to a double header near Wash DC. It was the Washington Senators vs the Yankees. Whitey Ford, Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Bera, ..... it don't get much better than that for a kid watching grown men run around in pajamas.

I was waiting for Billy to tell the story of Joe DiMaggio punching him hard in the stomach for not announcing Joe as the greatest living ballplayer. It happened in 1996 at Yankee stadium at an event where the Mickey Mantle statue was unveiled. Billy was asked at the last moment to introduce Yankee greats and he announced DiMaggio's presence without saying he was the greatest living ball player. Afterwards Billy (in his book) said Joe came up to him and angrily punched him hard in the stomach, enough to knock the breath out of him. Joe then got inches from Billy's face and snarled "Greatest living player!" and left. No apology except from George Steinbrenner. Billy could have had Joe D. arrested by he let it go. Billy got some revenge in his book. He ended the story by stating Willie Mays was actually the greatest living ballplayer!
