This isn't an ick but I don't understand when people can smell someone so clearly. " He smelled like snow and cedar." Also can humans really see someone's eyes darkening??

Oh my gosh yes! Especially when these people are running around fighting and sweating and they still smell like melon and citrus. No. They smell like BO and rot. Come on now.

    Your cat is so cute!
Being unable to pronounce names makes me waste so much time each time the name comes up and its even worse when the book then turns into a tv series or a film and it isnt pronounced how I have been pronouncing it.
    I loved hearing the icks.

I totally agree about so many of these! A big ick for me is when several characters use the same specific idioms or sayings, it blurs the line between characters

Love this! The only thing I would add is I don’t like when authors have clumsy exposition, or just have characters info-dump to each other at the beginning about things that would be so unrealistic to talk about.

Oof yes. When world building or context is introduced through awkward dialogue it makes me CRINGE.

I totally agree about a lot of these! Especially the miscommunication part. It’s so realistic and happens in pretty much every relationship at some point!

mine was the last one! i was definitely thinking about thrillers but can understand why it wouldn’t be so bad in fantasy. i hadn’t thought of that since i’m not a fantasy reader so it was fun to see your perspective!

So interesting how genre can affect how you feel about things!

YES about the gestures. The amount of winking in YA romantasy 🙄 when was the last time you saw someone wink?? These men are real twitchy.

One way my college professor tried to hammer passive voice out of us was to have us eliminate “to be” verbs from our writing as much as possible (was, is, etc.). It’s an easy way to spot passive voice; so, you “should” rewrite something like “Amanda was always bossing me around” to something like “Amanda bossed me around a lot.”
That’s not the only indicator of passive voice, but she hammered it into me so much that I unconsciously question using was/is even when I write casually 😂 but sometimes it’s just the most direct way to communicate something, so I’m trying to unlearn that habit some haha

Yeeees to so many of these!! Though I loved what you shared about miscommunication, I never looked at it that way but I really like that perspective. It has never bothered me as much as it seems to do for other readers, but now I think I can give the characters even more grace when it happens. Thanks for sharing!! 🥰

Oof the hard to pronounce terms, ugh that can be rough. I love a good pronunciation guide 😂I do agree that miscommunication can happen in a relationship, but I feel like gets used TOO often in books for conflict, so now I just find it repetitive lol

Totally agree on the hard to pronounce words and names. I almost always need the audio for fantasy for this reason 😂
Brings me back to my childhood calling Hermione “her-me-one” 🫠

Mona Lisa Vanishes takes place in France and every person, place or thing had French names. I didn’t learn French, so this was distracting. That is the good thing about Audible/audiobooks. I was able to read along with the audio version and understand/enjoy the story much better. I guess the only way around this is by not reading books with characters that are from, or live in, foreign countries. And that includes Britain and all her colonies. In fact, I have enjoyed learning much about other countries this way.

I hate it when men become fashion experts when thinking romantically about the cute outfit and hair style of their female love interest. Sometimes I go to my husband and ask him if he really knows what a babydoll dress is or what bobby pins are etc. and mostly the answer is no. With some female romance authors I wonder if they know men only from other romance novels 😅😅

My biggest issue with time jumps is when it's not made apparent until a few chapters after the time skip so I'm sitting there reading and being confused feeling like I missed something when in reality the story moved forward by a few years but didn't think to inform me.

Graphic sex between loving couples can be sweet to read. But graphic sex with a dominant character who is using force against an unwilling partner, especially children, indigent adults, etc., have actually stopped me from buying any books by that author. This goes from ick to outright rage. Same with physical and/or constant verbal abuse. I take no pleasure in putting these words and thoughts in my head.

Icks make me laugh since I apparently don't let these things bother me. The miscommunication one especially because my thought is if you hate it then stop reading romance where you know it will be in almost every book. 😂

    • @Booksandheather
      @Booksandheather  Před 2 měsíci

Right! Some version of it exists in nearly every book regardless of genre. It does make me frustrated because it’s SUPPOSED to make me frustrated.

The only time I hate the miscommunication troupe is when the other person knows that their partner misunderstood them and does nothing to correct it. Like you’re not even going to try to fix it? You’re not going to run after them or even text them? And if they did text them, it would be “can we talk?” No, just explain what happened. I used to see this so much in tv.
