IMO Passion is one of the greatest soundtracks ever recorded, let alone albums ever recorded. Peter's masterpiece.
I bought 'Oxygene' and 'Equinoxe' on vinyl when they first came out as I was so into artists playing keyboards like Emerson, Wakeman, Morazr, Fritz, etc.
The artwork on Oxygene got my attention and I flipped over the album and saw the listing of keyboards and I just had to buy it without ever hearing it.
Record stores were heaven to me back then.
I had really cool organ lights back then and would turn the lights off and play Oxygene with a little 'vegetative enhancement'.
The ocean waves and seagulls at the end are just hypnotic.
I used to listen to Jarre laying on the floor with headphones on as my grandparents watched the news
Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream!
Two of my fav electronic artists/bands
Jean Michel Jarre is just amazing. His albums, Equinox, Oxygen, Magnetic Fields and Rendez-Vous are out of this world. Love Tangerine Dream as well.
Jean-Michel's father Maurice wrote one of the greatest themes ever- Lawrence of Arabia. When you hear it you are taken away to a strange and exotic place.
Just a tid-bit about Jean-Michel Jarre that some peeps might not be aware of. His father was Maurice Jarre who wrote the score for the Movie 'Doctor Zhivago' starring Sir Laurence Olivier.
Have you listened to the concert in China album? Jarre was the 1st western artist to play there post revolution
@@mattperegrine873 I have the double CD
I had it on vinyl when I was a sophomore in high school.
Ahh! I never put those 2 together! Thanks for that :).
And his step brother (Maurice' stepson) was screenwriter Kevin Jarre.
ENNIO MORICONE UN GENIO . AI SUOI CONCERTI ANDAVI IN TRANCE . TUTTA LA SUA MUSICA E ' BELLISSIMA ," MISSION ' BEAUTIFUL
Glad you like those. Peter Gabriel released the BOF for The last temptation of Christ from Scorsese back in1989. This BOF is amazing. Youssou N'Dour is the vocalist on this, the one who sings on In your eyes (So). You MUST listen to the whole album with headphones in the dark, so powerful music. The same with Jean-Michel Jarre, our electronic music star from France, listen to the whole album Oxygène, Equinoxe, Zoolook, and Chants magnétiques, that are his best works.
Zoolook is such an underrated album.
Tangerine Dream scored most films for those growing up in the 80s. Legend, Near Dark, 3 O'clock High, Sorcerer etc. William Freidken said he would have used them to score the Exorcist if he had already heard them.
We're over 200, it's time for Alexia's 'trip', listening to Oxygene as she lays down on the floor. 😄
Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, The Masters of post modern Cinema!!!!
Hi... Jarre's albums should always be listened to in their entirety, as he creates conceptual musical works that evolve through listening to the record. About this part in particular, I will tell you some interesting facts. The special effects at the beginning of the theme are made with VCS 3 while a Farfisa organ grows that takes care of the melody at the beginning. The low notes are made if I remember correctly by the RMI harmonic synthesizer that will play a fundamental role in the second part of the song. The high notes are more than likely also from RMI due to the peculiar type of sound that this synthesizer has. In the second part, the RMI arpeggiator comes into action making a fast and frantic bass sequence until the end of the song. The rhythmic sounds with white noise are also made with the RMI while the melody solo is made with the Eminent 310U Organ. The rhythmic chords that accompany the solo of the main melody are played with the Eminent 310U. The sound of the crashing waves “Or fireworks that rise and explode at the end of the song” were made with the ARP 2600 and programmed by Michel Geiss. A hug.
Recommend Tangerine Dream Ricochet!
Great Choices Matt! Try
Jean Michele Jarre - Ethnicolor
Tangerine Dream - The entire White Eagle album
And Mojave Plan in particular
Great to hear some electronic music added to the channel, more please especially early Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, and more recently Boards of Canada, Orbital, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Four Tet, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Solar Fields etc.
So glad Matt picked the great track he did by Ennio, rather than the title track that's played so often. Tangerine Dream's track was great, too bad Matt didn't request their theme from Sorcerer It was what exposed us to TD here in the States.
Its more like hang out with friends and bring over some music for everyone to listen to like back in the 70's
Wow Matt love this cinema based marathon, always enjoy your marathons my dude! You have an excellent taste! I also have a marathon in this style coming later. Great choices for sure! Another enjoyable and excellent video Nick. Love and respect!✌️🤘✌️
Anticipating your list.
Can't wait to hear your take
@@mattperegrine873 there's actually a Tangerine Dream track in it too. Great minds my friend!
I think you'd really enjoy listening to the whole album of Pete Gabriel's "The Last Temptation of Christ" - one of the most unusual and amazing soundtracks.... (Then afterwards watch the film!) 🙂
The Sources companion album is great too!
Passion is an amazing soundtrack.
Hi again !! ... The album Oxygene needs to be heard from the beginning ...till the end. Yes 'Ravels Bolero' came to mind with the 2nd part of this. Play Lex the entire album ... It is amazing ! .... Tangerine Dream ... in the 70's when I was still at art school an album came out called "Rubycon" ... Oooo now there's an album to lay on the floor and listen to from start to finish....2 tracks approx 15mins long each. You will both be floating......You may then consider music by Klaus Schulze...."Timewind" will have you travelling through the universe, and is a half hour long, and a 2nd track the same length, on the album of the same name, which is a lot more slow & hypnotic. I have a lot of such albums very hypnotic....and I'm still buying them from Klaus Schulze who sadly passed away recently. [ He was in early Tangerine Dream ] ... I have ordered " Prive'e " & " "Virtual Outback" by him. Both utterly beautiful. Ok I'm off before I write a book ! This was awesome thankyou ! Byee Jim X
Some Synergy (Larry Fast) albums too
@@bmac1205 Don't know Larry Fast...Is the music similar electronic music ? Thankyou !
@@jimled50jl49 Larry Fast was on the first 4 Peter Gabriel albums. He also did some work with the band 'Nektar'.
He's done several albums under the moniker of 'Synergy' He plays all electronic keyboards as well as electronic percussion sounds. His music is a bit hard to find as he was on the 'Passport' record label which folded.
The Synergy albums are:
1975: Electronic Realizations for Rock Orchestra
1976: Sequencer
1978: Cords
1979: Games
1981: Audion
1981: Computer Experiments, Volume One
1982: The Jupiter Menace (soundtrack for film The Jupiter Menace)
1984: Semi-Conductor (compilation containing two new tracks)
1987: Metropolitan Suite
1998: Semi-Conductor, Release 2 (re-release of Semi-Conductor, remastered and containing ten additional tracks)
2003: Reconstructed Artifacts (compilation consisting of re-recorded versions of old tracks)
google 'Larry Fast Synergy wiki' for more info
My favorites are Sequencer, Games and Metropolitan Suite
TD's Stratosfear album really got me hooked. That is the one that did it for me.
@@bmac1205 Cheers B Mac, much appreciated.
Have always loved Jean Michel Jarre's music ever since " Oxygene" went to #1 in our hit parade and stayed there for more than 10 weeks. He has always pushed the envelope with innovation and firsts such as his free open air concert in Houston to commemorate 25? Anniversary of NASA. He had the hi-rises of down town Houston hung with white sheets to turn them into the world's largest projector screens, and sadly he had composed a piece of music to be play from space on harmonica by an astronaut on the Columbia shuttle for the first time and would have been the first original piece of music from space and would have been shown up on the hi-rise screens. But not to be with the tragic loss of the shuttle and crew. This concert was in the Guinness book of records as the largest ever number of people at an estimated 3. 5 to 4 million as down town was completely full and the motorways blocked for the whole concert. Many more firsts in his career (special mention for concert in china and china forbidden city concert). Brilliant brilliant artist.
Michel Jarre was one of Hollywood`s most famous film composers - his son Jean-Michel Jarre is the pioneer of Electro music together with Kraftwerk. The "Instrumental" Peter Gabriel can be discovered on his fim soundtracks for the movies "Birdy", "Rabbit Proof Fence" and "Passion - Music for Last Temptation of Christ"
If you're going to do movie scores, I highly recommend the soundtrack from Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass. In my opinion the soundtrack album is a better listening experience than listening to it during the movie, even though there is no dialog over the soundtrack in the movie. However, the Qatsi Trilogy of movies are definitely a must watch.
Jarre's Oxygène was released the same year as Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow, 1976. Jarre used all analog synthesizers I believe; I don't think sampling was available at the time. The story of the album is fascinating. He was limited on one of his keyboards to very few keys as the rest were broken, so he composed his music based on what was available to him.
You mentioned once that you're a fan of movie scores.
Loved this so much. Yes! All I write is basically scores. Can't do 3 chords
Tangerine Dream had quite a few soundtracks. Three come to mind right away. 'Risky Business', 'Thief', & 'Sorcerer'. I know there are many others, but those three come to mind to me right away for me.
Its SAD that the soundtrack of "The Keep" was never released :(.
'Firestarter' compares well with their best non-soundtrack albums of the 80s ('Tangram', 'Exit', 'Logos', 'Poland') and 'Legend' includes songs by Bryan Ferry (with David Gilmour on guitar) and Jon Anderson.
The Keep
@@bookhouseboy280as much i like Tangerine Dream, their soundtrack for Legend was all off. Jerry Goldxmith's original sountrack is far better snd matches the visuals so perfectly. You can see that in both the european and director's cut of the film.
@@carlossaraiva8213 It seems to be a matter of what version you watched first. TD's music is far more magical, mystical, and alluring in the American cut, particularly in the dancing dress scene, IMHO. As an album of contemporary electronic music, their Legend stands on its own. A magnificent work of art that doesn't require visuals to appreciate.
Jean Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor
Hi Nick, ...have a guess ? ... Yep , not yet played....Just seen the album covers. Lol ... Oh boy ! This is going to be amazing ! I have these albums !!! and the tracks ...woohoo !!! ......I'm gonna get a coffee and then play this amazing music shared by you.....As a footnote in case I forget when I come on the comments again [ You know me by now Lol ] .... Ennio Morricone album "Once Upon a Time in the West" is an absolute must !!! ...and Nick ... The movie is in my personal opinion the greatest western ever made !! EVER !! The opening sequence is a masterpiece in itself..... Charles Bronson is the enigmatic ; Man with a Harmonica. I'm not a great fan of Westerns except for Clint Eastwood and of course the original Magnificent 7....but this is on another level.....and the music soundtrack is stunning ! ..Just thought I would mention it ..ahem ! Byee Jim X
Totally agree on every point. Just rewatched OUAT In The West, about a month ago, after over a decade, and alot was for the music.
@@garyarnett1220 Cinematic perfection is the only way to describe that movie.
Marley sighting at time mark 23.41 Yay Marley!!!!!!!!! 🐶🐶
A great session, loved that you picked up Peter Gabriel’s ”Passion” score - such a stunning work… If you ever return to film scores, Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard’s score to ”Gladiator” is another great example of a marriage of modern film music to ancient/archaic period music.
You had my heart with Ennio Morricone. Epic!
All of these composers and collaborators are fantastic. But to end with Peter Gabriel’s Passion is the 💣. One of the greatest soundtracks ever……… it really stands alone.
The same year as Risky Business, Pino Donaggio's music for Brian De Palma's movie Body Double was released and if you listen to the track "Telescope" from it, it is really inspired by "Love on a Real Train (Risky Business)" by Tangerine Dream !
Missing Bernard Herrmann, Henry Mancini and John Barry.
Bernard Herrmann: The Day The Earth Stood Still is the creepiest Theremin playing ever. As far as non soundtrack electronic music goes might I suggest Synergy:Electronic Realizations For Rock Orchestra played by one guy,Larry Fast.
you had the jean michel part, but Jarre has a silent e so it's easy , jar. or jarr. In Ennio's scores some melodies were associated to a specific character of the movie. his music really carried the movie.. From JMJ i mostly like Chants magnétiques 3. I liked Oxygene 1, but around here it was overplayed on radio (and by me).
Great tracks
Still waiting for the rest of "Oxygene", or maybe even "Equinoxe"? ;)
One of my brother's friend gave him his grandfather's owned original cassette tape of Oxygene, however my brother was never interested to listen to it but I did, when I was about 11, and it became one of my favourite albums of all time, also later on Equinoxe and Magnetic Fields. No lie but I have listened to this whole album of Oxygene so many times that I can literally play it back in my head without physically playing it. JMJ is a legend, and sad to say this but the awesomeness of analogue music or musical instruments of that era, can never sound the same in today's digital technology.
The Extasy of Gold is epic
Amazing reaction, check the new documentary “Ennio” by Giuseppe Tornatore, it is amazing, there is more than western film music in Ennio Morricone music👌🏻…
interesting interview with Beato asking Steve Wilson what was one of his go to albums & he said Tangerine Dreams "Zeit" he plays most often, like every month or so...just a lil tidbit coz I know you guys dig Steve Wilson....peace
Thanks for the awesome trivia; much appreciated!!
It is such an incredibly boring album. Very atmospheric and I guess good for calming anxiety? Phaedra was a huge step forward compared to 'Zeit' Just my opinion.
@@bmac1205 I agree ! Zeit is nice just as an ambient album but nothing more, it remains very static and boring for the whole length of an album. To discover Tangerine Dream Matt must start with the albums Phaedra (1974), Rubycon (1975) and Stratosfear (1976).
@@a.k.1740 Zeit is polarizing because it was ahead of its time. The birth of dark ambient and along with Schulze's 'Irrlicht', the ultimate space album. Don't forget 'Ricochet' (1975).
@@bookhouseboy280 Yes, I didn't mention Ricochet because it's a live album, albeit partially, since a lot of sections were recorded in the studio...but I agree, Ricochet can be added to the list !
There is only one recommendation necessary - Tangram by Tangerine Dream - the pinnacle of sequenced, electronica.
Love on a Real Train is a Tangerine Dream classic. Check out The track Cloudburst Flight on their Force Majeure album, first time I heard it, it blew my mind.
Great channel👍
Great journey! Thank you for being bold and playing Tangerine Dream which together with Jean-Michel Jarre and Klaus Schulze and of course Kraftwerk laid the foundation for electronic music. All those were true pioneers starting with their first Moog Synthesizers, which looked like huge furnitures in those days.
With Tangerine Dream tho I'd recommend some of the earlier works. You may want to start with Ricochet or Cold Water Canyon. And then there's Stratosphere, Rubycon, And so much more.
Matt, you beat me to requesting Soundtrack Scoring! (I usually start my Playlists with a Soundtrack score). THIS is going to be an EPIC Marathon, looking forward to it! But "The Passion" is one of my fave soundtracks, Peter did a great job.
. . . . here we go!
Btw - when I was lucky to see the "Master of Puppets" Tour, it was so cool to hear the guys open with "The Ecstasy of Gold", since I was raised on Western Films.
How many years have you been Jean Michel Jarre fan? I have been his fan since 1987 ☺
Ver ynice Marathon. Hey, Nick - you have to do Jean-Michel Jarre's entire 'Oxygene`'-album. It's a milestone of electronic music.
Ennio is a marvelous composer. I remember hearing Jean-Michel's Oxygene when it came out, I thought it was pretty cool, but not the sort of thing I was listening to at the time. I've love Tangerine Dream since hearing them in the early 70s and Peter Gabriel since his Genesis days.
Hi... Peter Gabriel's Passion album must be listened to.
Oxygene sounds like the classical piece "el Bolero"
Nick, JustJP has done full album reactions to Jarre's 2nd and 3rd albums, Oxygène and Èquinoxe by album sides on his channel. He did Oxygène nearly two years ago, and it has not been blocked.
Go for it! Jarre in full album listens is amazing.
check out Jean Michel Jarre album Chronologie!!
TD all the way for me,
John Carpenter wrote the music of his movies, as you may know. There is some videos where he play his music live with a band. I saw them in Montreal 3 or 4 years ago. If you like his movies and music, you should watch this. The one I prefer is the music from Assault on precinct 13.
Where to begin? These are among my favorite sounds and kinds of sounds -- that being soundtrack to movies, which I hope you pursue con mucho gusto, parce qu'il est elysian et avec une semblementario extraordinaire. Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein, Morricone, Zimmer, Phillips Head Screwdriver, Isham, Usham, Everybodysham, Popeye, God, digression itself.
When the gentle ancient king who was my father passed away, Morricone's "Gabriel's Oboe" made its way into my heart's ear, and I took it as his song, which was played at his service. It was featured in "The Mission". Morricone's work on "Cinema Paradiso" is also of a high order, as is Zimmer's work on Gladiator, commissioning the genius of Lisa Gerrard. "Now We Are Free" would be a good one to share. The music in "To Kill a Mockingbird", "North By Northwest", "Death in Venice", "Children of a Lesser God", "The Big Chill", "Life is Beautiful", as well as Branagh's genius for music in every one of his productions. My favorites there are from "Much Ado", "Henry V" and that final song sung by Ben Kingsley, where he, as basically Shakespeare, repeats "I'll strive to please you everyday." -- which I have taken for my own mantra. A vote for more soundtracks. Great marathon today. Inspiring. Also inspiring are the Reggio films, I believe he was called, starting with Koyaanisqaatsi.
Wow, you dropped many of our favorite movies there! Great taste and glad you enjoyed this with me!

Really appreciate the electronic selections, but I do have one minor quibble.
I’m curious to know if anything from ‘Oxygene’ has ever appeared in a soundtrack. As far as I knew, Jean Michel’s father Maurice was the film composer in the family.
I don't know if anything from Oxygène being used in soundtracks, but JMJ's first album, Deserted Palace, is the soundtrack to the film of the same name.
@@IllumeEltanin like everyone else outside of Europe, I always thought ‘Oxygene’ was JMJ’s debut. I’ve never even heard of that soundtrack.
