    I'm an African American living in the USA. I grow up in church in the Christian faith. When I first learned about Buddhism it just makes so much sense. It's just so powerful when you learn for yourself with no other influences.. My life is changing because of people like Ajahn Brahm. I just wanted to say thanks...

      Angry Black Man That's the beauty of Buddhism, it only asks you to listen, learn and most importantly, do (the practice). It doesn't demand belief to access some greater community or even an afterlife, it doesn't threaten you with hell or lead you on with the hope of infinite bliss, it just gives you the chance to walk a truly wholesome, compassionate and worthwhile path. I hope you're still listening to these talks 2 years later. They're very rewarding.

    Ajahn Brahm, I'm 44 I have had depression before I had ever heard of depression or new what it was. I can remember being in the first grade and being out on recess, I would play all recess long, jumping rope, swinging, playing tetherball, I would put my jacket on the ground up against the school building and stand on my head, but I felt horrible I couldn't understand why I felt so badly. I didn't understand why I felt so horrible even when I was playing, I kept going on like that for a while, then I heard the word hopeless and I thought that is how I feel, completely hopeless! Then I eventually heard of depression and what it is and I realized that I had that, I had all the symptoms. And I still do now, I've been in "treatment " for 16 years. But now I mostly do stuff on my own to try to help myself. I've been a Christian since I was a little girl I figure Jesus isn't taking this burden off of me for some reason. Several years ago I started on a daily basis spending time every day praying and being in thought with all the people in the world that are suffering, people that don't have food, living in war zone's, sick people, anyone that is suffering. I felt that this was what God wanted me to do, and I'm still doing it. I'm writing this comment because you said people just need to be around other people and they won't get depressed, or that depressed people just keep thinking about negative experiences and that's why they are depressed. Maybe that is true for some, but it is not true for me and a lot of other people I know. I am almost always around other people, and keeping myself busy, and I'm a positive person despite the way I feel. A lot of times it is really hard work. Having depression I have learned what is really important in life, it has opened my eyes to so many different things, good things. Well, I guess that's all I have to say.

    Thanks for sharing. As always, enlightening. Just wanted to add thoughts that some viewers may not have considered. Suicide is so stigmatized that the majority ask "Why." Part of compassion is see the other persons POV. To them it is not why, but "why not." When a person is unable to find meaning or purpose to their existence, suicide can often be seen as a way to "re-boot." Also, suicide is not always about depression, but sometimes about lack of of positive options. Loss of freedom, medical issues, weariness of conflict can all contribute to individuals seeing suicide as an option. While I agree that its not always the best option, for some who can only see as a horse with blinders, it may seem their best option. With our hearts we care, with compassion we can heal.

    Thankq Ajahn Brahm. I love your light touch. My niece recently took her own life. The fall out from such an act is enormous. It is a huge mistake. It certainly highlights the fact that we're all connected because when someone steps out of life they take a piece of you with them and I don't know how you get it back. It's not a lesson I wanted to learn and life seems so surreal now. There's been so much destruction in the family I'm sick of it. I thought we were finally over the worst and now this. I had really begun to experience joy through my meditations and then my world came crashing down. I must admit that through the surreal experience of grief where you feel not in this world or the next, is that joy in small things becomes so much more poignant like a father pointing out the green man at the road crossing or parents just taking their children across the road, or the patience of a mother with her very upset child who desperately wants something from the supermarket. I've been in a very dark place myself but I never got to the point of planning it and acting on it. The greatest advice my Mum gave me when I told her I was depressed was to get my mind off myself and think about others - hence voluntary work or just reaching out. But in all honesty the greatest joy for me would to see my niece again and to find out she was still alive and well and doing her thing in the world.

My focuses are more on things that are meaningful family, dharma, and really having fun enjoying this life while I'm here... It's not so bad when things don't go my way it doesn't feel like life is picking on me... I didn't always view things that way... It's just life taking it natural course... People die, my trucks break, my ankle hurts, money short, etc... It's all part of anicca... THE SUFFERING PART IS NOT WANTING THINGS TO HAPPEN THAT ARE A NATURAL PART OF US BEING HERE... It's ok as long as you learn where true happiness comes from and learn to have a true peace of mind.

      Judging a tree on aesthetics is futile. A tree is a tree and has inner beauty. You asked why it's so hard to stay positive but I would ask why are you attached to being positive? It's like trying to hold on to a bar of soap. Those angry granny feelings are much more jagged and easier to grasp and so we get attached to them more easily. Whereas those feelings of love and compassion are smooth like water that's harder to hold on to.

This life is like looking through a telescope. you see very beautiful things through your eyes and also horrible things. when you die it's like taking your eye away from the telescope eyepiece... and entering the afterlife. Or thought of another way, life is that brief moment when a fish jumps out of the ocean, and the afterlife is returning to the ocean.

I feel that these constant references to re-incarnation take away credibility from the talks because I find re-incarnation rather esoteric. Ajahn Brahm is always talking about re-incarnation as a fact but is there any evidence except for a couple of people claiming to remember past lives?

    • @360darius
      @360darius Před 9 lety +2

      I can't show you any other credible evidence that rebirth exist, but take in the simple fact of logic. It makes a lot more sense to be reborn and die again and again, then to have one shot in this vast universe and that is it. I dont know if you are a believer in ghost, but there is much credible evidence to be found that not only are they ghost in their new life but they claimed to be a documented real person in their last. Rebirth makes a lot more sense than any religion after life theories can provide you. So do good deeds and avoid bad ones it matters.

I think that one of the greatest accomplishments of the human race over the past couple of hunedred years is the emphasize on science and rational thought. As long as something is not scientifically proven, I generally do not believe in it. Maybe as science advances it will be proven some time but until then I remain sceptic.

It's nothing to do with fundamentalist Buddhism. If there were fundamentalist Buddhism, it is the Middle way that Buddha taught. It will never be extremism. It is sad that Burmese Buddhists have a bad reputation. Most Burmese have been practicing vipassana (insight) meditation ,and in fact, Ajahn Brahm's teacher,Ajahn Chah, was a student of a Burmese Mahasi Sayadaw.
