A guy told a story here on CZcams about destroying a beaver dam. He had taken it down twice, trying to get the beavers to move away. The third time he walked down the path to the creek, the beavers had built a dam across the path.
@RJb Austin Nibby is everything! That clip made my whole day. Especially with the little hop. Too many of us have changed the locks, then did a little dance on the way to the kitchen to grab a celebratory glass of wine. Nibby was singing our lives with her words. 🤣🤣🤣
The reason why sounds of rain or running faucets causes Nibby to go into dam-building mode is because that's the biological 'trigger', if you will. The sound alone of running water drives beavers to construct dams. Even if it's an electronic speaker just playing the sound of running water, beavers will cover it with sticks and mud until the sound is suppressed enough.
cbc documentary years ago had a park warden conduct that experiment with a recording of running water, and beavers immediately covered up speaker with mud and sticks... to keep culverts and pipes from being dammed up, water is disturbed upstream of culvert with pipes driven into water bed to prevent damming at critical waterways... only creature to manipulate the landscape more than beavers are humans... just my canadian nickel (2 cents with inflation)
Thank you Jeanne.!! A wonderful counterweight to the serious stuff. And reminding us all to laugh. There’s too little of that at present and it’s vital to a balanced life.
@@ericconnor8419 The sound or sensation of running water is all it takes to trigger them into building mode. Somewhat like the pre programmed shape that cats respond to when they see a cucumber and jump like they just grabbed a live electrical wire. They probably evolved to perceive snakes as dangerous through this instinctive response just as beavers evolved to evade predators by creating flooded areas in which they can move undetected beneath the water.
I was just thinking that Jeanne has become a legend in her own time with feature stories which have difficulty attracting negativity and are just "feel good" tales which make brighter anyones day.
Once, as a teenager I was snorkeling in a river near home and a small beaver swam right up to my face mask and seemed quite curious about my intrusion. It startled me at first, but was clearly not a threat like a protective momma might have been.
you were probably the first human it had ever seen to be fair... some young animals are quite curious ha I've had numerous quote on quote "first encounters"... real cool story is my first "intro into wilderness" (went to college in Alaska for outdoor studies)... but we were in the talkeetna mountain range.. and some young caribou would follow us rather closely for hours (instructor told me,,, they do that when they first see a human)... also when I was sea kayaking thru prince William sound on another college expedition. this freaking lil seal legit followed us from the beginning of the trip to the end.. 18 days and like 240 nautical miles... we all felt so sad leaving him at our pullout harbour... he was still in the cove, just watching us as we loaded the kayaks and gear up. welp lol but anyway animals are amazing!!!
It's not a question of age - beavers can be very aggressive in the wild regardless of gender or age, especially underwater. Remember that their teeth have evolved for chewing through trees - your diving equipment or skin is not going to present nearly so much resistance as tough tree bark.

LOL.. omg she's so stinkin adorable 😍 💖 💕 💓 😘😘😘😘😘 I loved how she caught a sassy attitude when her handler carried her away from the door. 🤣🤣🤣 she sounded like a spoiled human child.
Or a pissed off human cause their parent's are being insufferable not all tantrums is a child being unreasonable or "spoilt" it's often the parent's being unreasonable, if the beaver didn't want to be picked up respect that and don't pick her up, which is what you would want if you were her.
My friend worked for park services and dealing with determined beavers was the worst task! They would use brambles and poop to keep your from tearing up the dam. Even hiding the thorny stuff inside a pile of innocent sticks! They were tenacious and clever, and one beaver could change a whole landscape so quickly.
I love her reports, the best thing when you're hanging down or news all day. She really lift my spirits every time I see her reports. Please don't get rid of this segment it's needed for all
Absolutely beautiful! And why we need to do all things possible to preserve our nature and eco system. These animals are even more magical than humanity is.
Aww! this story really created light humour. I loved your use of Pun throughout the video. BTW, the beaver sounded like a little baby throwing a tantrum.
Scientists found that the night of the 1938 Hurricane beavers were shown to be working on their dams. The rain flooded brooks and rivers were flowing over the tops of the dams but the went now where. They were directly credited with preventing flooding in New York.
I needed this story today. The news of late has been so bleak, scary and depressing. I actually had to stop watching it because it was affecting me so deeply. Thank you so much for sharing this story. You made my dam day😀
If we hadn’t killed off all the wild beaver our rivers and lakes wouldn’t be in such a mess. They make dams which last awhile and ponds form, when the dams give way they leave the soil enriched with nutrients . While the dams hold the water back aquatic life flourishes all kinds of species reproduce in larger numbers, it’s an amazing cycle that we humans have interfered with and buggered up royally. Shame on our greedy selves.
Although absolutely adorable and heartwarming to us, it's also very sad to hear she becomes more excited when she hears rain or a faucet. Hoping she can be released back into her natural habitat when ready!
Beavers naturally and instinctually dislike the sound of running water and feel the need to stop it, so there's nothing sad about it, that's perfectly normal beaver behavior.
Decades ago researchers figured out that a beaver's dam-building instinct is triggered by the sound of running water. Maybe because they don't have very good vision. The beavers in the experiment ignored silent water flowing from a pipe in favor of speakers playing the sound of running water. So it's nothing sad it's just normal behavior.
The little celebration hops are so adorable, it hurts my heart to know that I can't have one as a little nature buddy I can visit in the woods or something..... 😱😍❤️

It was probably responding to the gurgling sound in your snorkel. That sound triggers all their instinctual dam building response.
