Wildfire on Minnechaug Mountain, a Documentary in Hampden Massachusetts

In the evening hours of Saturday September 19th, 2020, a brush fire was reported on the top of Minnechaug Mountain in Hampden Massachusetts.
Fire Department crews were immediately dispatched and rushed to the scene to work on extinguishing the fire and help prevent spread.
The terrain of the mountain was rocky and steep, the location of the fire made it difficult for crews to reach by normal means.
Fortunately, fire crews were able to use their department's vintage, yet reliable brush truck and gain access by trails from the east, while other crews from the west, hiked trails on the opposite side to meet at the top lookout, where the fire was slowly growing.
Fire crews, volunteers and citizens quickly helped control the scene. They put out the blaze and dug a fire break to help stop the spread.
Over the course of the night and into the next day, the steep terrain, dry conditions and high winds set the stage for the fire to double in size.
Although contained, crews found that the stubborn fire was now burning deep in the ground as opposed to outward on the mountain.
Crews worked tirelessly over the course of three days, with mutual aid from surrounding towns to help contain the wildfire, until an aerial water drop could be made.
On day three, a National Guard Blackhawk helicopter was dispatched.
The Air National Guard made dozens of water drops on the mountain side to soak the deep rooted fire.
The combined efforts of many, successfully put an end to what was a long few days for fire crews, working hard to provide safety to the town below.

i remember seeing the helicopters flying over the pond to pick up water, i was there that day. i hike minnechaug mountain all the time too.
